New Directions will welcome pop star Charice on the next season of Glee, and you better spend the next few months working on your melisma, Rachel Berry, because the new kid’s been dubbed “the most talented girl in the world” by Oprah Winfrey.

Charice will guest star on Glee as a foreign exchange student, Entertainment Weekly reports — though when we met with the 18-year-old singer just a few weeks ago, the very un-divalike diva told us that buzz about her joining the show was nothing but a rumour.

“That’s a great rumour, though,” she said during a stop in Toronto. “I wish I could be part of that series.”

Starmaking appearances on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and (five!) visits to Oprah have introduced Charice to TV audiences already, but it was the Internet that led to Charice scoring those chat-show breaks. “It was all YouTube,” Charice says of her path to fame — and the pop belter says she prowls around YouTube in her spare time looking for new music, herself.

“I love people who are doing covers, not only my songs, but other songs,” Charice told Dose.ca before sharing her two new favourite finds. Here they are. (Maybe if she wishes hard enough, they’ll score a spot on Glee Season Three…)

1) xyzaannalien Sings Charice’s “Pyramid (Barry Harris Club Remixed Version)”

“I think it’s the most amazing thing, the coolest video I saw,” Charice says of this clip of a little girl covering the remix of her current single “Pyramid.” “I was like ‘What?!’ A four-year-old singing the remix version — and she’s right on tune. I mean, she doesn’t know the lyrics very well, but she can speak the lyrics very clearly. I was really proud. … It’s so cute,” says Charice, who says that as a little girl, she herself was imitating Celine Dion in the same way (albeit not on YouTube).

“You know, I have a personalized microphone, with like Swarovski crystals and she made one too! But just with the simple bling blings and all that, and she put her name on it and it’s amazing. I saw her YouTube channel and I saw all the videos, she was singing all my songs.

2) VanJess24 – “Obsessed” Beatboxing and a capella Cover

A pop music fan, Charice says she tends to seek out covers of her favourite artists’ hits — like this one of Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed.”

“I’ve discovered a lot!” she says, but this duo stuck out in her memory. “They’re like sisters, they’re covering all the new songs, but just a cappella. And one’s just doing the beat box, it’s really amazing.”

Part 4 Next Stop: TV

After the town-fiesta singing contest in Batangas and Laguna, the next stop was television. Charice began as a contestant on Filipino local channel, Channel 9’s Bulilit Kampeon [Little Champion], a little-known singing contest hosted by Pilita Corrales. Charice won as third runner-up and eventually became one of the program’s co-hosts. After the show folded up, she joined two other TV competitions: Birit Bulilit [Little Belter] on Channel 13 (where she was first runner-up and the “MTB Popstar” segment of Magandang Tanghali BayanM [Good Afternoon People], where she won second place.

In 2004, Charice joined an ABS-CBN kiddie talent search, Little Big Star, hosted by Sarah Geronimo. It was Charice’s appearance on this show that would mark the beginning of her journey to world-wide success.

On Little Big Star, Charice didn’t end up as the Brightest Star, or first-place winner. In fact, she had been eliminated earlier, after her first performance. But she was called back later as a wild-card contender, and she made it to the finals, coming in third (after Sam Conception and Gian Barbarona). She was heartbroken and cried for almost a week because she didn’t get P1-million top prize.

“She couldn’t accept it,” Raquel recalls. “She gave her best. She was expecting that we will have our own house, own car, public jeepney…”

After Little Big Star, Charice still got invited to perform with other kids on ABS-CBN programs, but it looked like nothing big was going to happen, that she would eventually have to either join new singin competitions or just focus on school. Then, one day, the Pempengcos got a call from South Korea.

A fan had earlier uploaded, on the video sharing website YouTube, a series of clips of Charice’s performances on Little Big Star. Charice says the video of her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” became such a big hit in South Korea that she was invited to perform on Star King, a popular variety show there.

In an October 2007 episode of Star King, Charice sang “And I Am telling You I’m Not Going,” from the musical dreamgirls. This performance-which showed Charice in a pink ensemble, her hair in pigtails, doing her juggling act with her mic, to the cheers of a young Korean audience-was again uploaded on youtube, and it was this Star king video that would lead the staff of the Ellen DeGeneres Show, a top-rating daytime talk program in the US., hosted by comedian Ellen Degeneres, to take an interest in the young Filipina.

Degeneres herself spoke to Charice on the phone on November 28, 2007. For Charice, this very first call from the 12-time Emmy Award-winning TV host was an embarrassing experience.

“That was an embarrassing moment”, Charice recalls. “Because I didn’t know her! She told me, ‘Hi this is Ellen Degeneres.’ ‘Hi uhm, who’s this?’- I asked her. ‘This is Ellen DeGeneres, I would like to invite you to my show…’ Then, I kind of whispered to Mommy, ‘I don’t know her.’ Because I really don’t know which TV show.”

“She (Ellen) asked me to visit her website. So I visited her website, I saw artists whom she invited to be guests on her show. I said, ‘Oh no, this is embarrassing. We were speaking with her a while ago. It was her!’ So, that was it, I had my visa. Then, we’re off to fly, fly away to America. That was our first time.”

The show shouldered plane fare and accommodations. Ellen shed tears when she saw Charice perform at the rehearsals, but couldn’t help being emotional again during the live performance. Charice cried, too, when the audience gave her a standing ovation, the first in her young but already long, storied life as a performer.

Just three years ago, the petite Filipina was a struggling teen-aged girl in Manila, joining one singing competition after another to help bring food on the table for her single mom Raquel and younger brother, Karl. After she was discovered in the Internet and then guested at the shows of Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey, life has dramatically changed for Charice and her family. Recently, she gifted her mom with a house and a car.

The legendary David Foster has taken her under his wing and she’s good friends with Oprah which she calls “an honor. I always get to hug her– that’s my favorite! I have learned to have her same attitude and to never stop dreaming.”

Some of the words of Pyramid, written by Swedish songwriter David Jassy, aptly describes Charice’s struggle to the top.

We took it from the bottom up
And even in a desert storm
Sturdy as a rock we hold
Wishing every moment froze
Now I just wanna let you know
Pyramid, we built this on a solid rock

The R&B love song, Pyramid, is Charice’s second international single; the first being Note to God. “I’m really, really excited because this is actually my first ever Pop/R&B album because I’d been singing, you know, Whitney Houston’s songs and Celine Dion’s songs… And now, I can’t believe that these are my own songs,” she told Oprah.

Foster, who was seated with the audience that time, turned a little emotional as well when Oprah asked him about Charice, where he also revealed that he’d agreed to be her godfather. Later, the smile on Foster’s face when Charice hit her big note on Pyramid just reflected pure pride.

It is interesting that Charice bested Beyonce in an Italian Popularity Poll. Her first single was the dramatic Note to God which was premiered on the Oprah show last year and was voted the “Best Performance of the Year.”

Even through all international acclaim, Charice still remains humble. “It’s really hard to go international, so that’s why I’m not expecting it right now. I love the record, but I don’t know if it will go far,” a humble Charice told the New York Daily News.

Prior to her American performances, it was reported that Charice never received any formal training apart from informal voice lessons from her mother. And yet, masters in the industry such as David Foster are enthralled by her voice. In an ABC News interview, David Foster mentioned that Charice has the ability to mimic other people’s voices, which, according to him, is a characteristic of good singers. The New York Post once called her a vocal prodigy for being able to sing ‘big songs’ even in her tender age. Her vocal quality has been compared with those of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.

Asked if she was dating anyone, Charice said, “No, but I do have a crush on Josh Groban. I was shaking when we met.” Groban, on the other hand, once said in an interview that

Charice’s voice is one of the most beautiful voices he has heard in a long time.

This Saturday, May 22, Charice will have her formal church baptism and confirmation at the Pasig Cathedral in Manila. One of her godfathers is David Foster, who was so touched at being chosen by Charice. The famed record producer-composer said during the Oprah May 11 show. “Probably the most extraordinary thing that’s happened to Charice and I, is, today, I got a letter from her asking me to be her godfather.”

Yes, Charice has truly come a long way from her past hurts and struggles. But, now she’s here to stay, like a pyramid.And every step you took we’ve grown

When teenage singing sensation Charice met Whitney Houston at a listening party for the superstar’s album, I Look To You, last year, the 18-year-old couldn’t believe that a legend like Houston even knew who she was.

“Whitney was like, ‘Hello, Charice! I know you!’” the Filipino-born singer tells Tonic. Houston told Charice that she had seen a DVD of her singing some of the superstar’s greatest hits, including “I Have Nothing” and “I Will Always Love You.”

“She said to me, ‘You sang those songs so effortlessly!’” says Charice, who admits she was more than a little nervous meeting one of her idols. “I was shaking,” she says. “It was an amazing moment.”

Just as amazing as when the petite, 5′1″ teenager begins to sing, blowing away audiences all over the world with a 10-decibel voice that has been compared to Houston and Celine Dion.

Tuesday, just one day after her 18th birthday, Charice made her fourth appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, along with Justin Bieber, for the US debut of her new, self-titled album and to perform her hit single, “Pyramid,” featuring Iyaz, which nabbed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart, overtaking Rihanna’s “Rude Boy.”

“This is my first pop R&B album ever,” says Charice. “I love all the songs on the album. I usually sing songs by Celine Dion and Whitney Houston. But the songs on this album are original. I’m really proud of it. It’s all been a dream come true.”

A YouTube Cinderella Story
In the past four years since Charice’s career has taken off, the talented teen has caught the attention of Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey and shared the stage with superstars including Celine Dion, who gave her “motherly” advice in her dressing room when they were performing together at Madison Square Garden. She’s performed for Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and with Andrea Boccelli in Tuscany.

But life was far from glamorous for Charice when she was a child. Her parents split up when she was three years old, because of domestic violence. On the September 9, 2008 episode of Oprah, Charice told the audience how at three years old, she watched her father choke her mother and threaten her with a gun. Neighbors heard her mother’s screams and stopped him. “We left my dad and after that, I never saw him and I don’t want to see him,” Charice told Oprah. “I’m just singing now for my mom. I couldn’t help her before, that’s why I want to help her now.”

Her mother, Raquel Relucio, worked sixteen-hour days, six days a week at a garment factory to support Charice, whose full name is Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco, and her younger brother, Carl. From an early age, Relucio, who is a singer herself, knew her daughter had an exceptional voice. “My mom discovered my voice when I was four years old,” Charice said on Oprah. “She thought, ‘that’s the radio’s playing, you know, Celine Dion is singing.’ She went to the living room and she saw me singing and she was like, ‘Oh my gosh, Charice is singing!’

Charice used that exceptional voice to help support her mother and brother by singing in amateur contests in the Philippines. Life changed dramatically for her when she started performing on the Filipino talent show Little Big Star (a version of American Idol) and the popular South Korean talent show Star King, and a fan began posting those performances on YouTube, making her an internet superstar. (She now has more than 13 million YouTube followers.)

DeGeneres saw one of those performances on YouTube and invited Charice to perform on her show, where she sang “I Will Always Love You,” catching the eye of one of the most powerful women in television: Oprah.

Oprah’s Protégé
Charice says she has a special place in her heart for Winfrey, who helped launch the singer’s career on her show. In 2008, Winfrey invited Charice to appear on an episode of her show called “World’s Smartest Kids,” where she brought down the house with a powerful rendition of Houston’s “I Have Nothing.” “You are a force to be reckoned with,” Oprah told her. “That voice comes from something bigger than yourself.”

Oprah, who has called Charice “the most talented girl in the world,” says on her website: “One of the things I love most about Charice is that no matter what obstacles she’s faced in her life, she’s never given up on her dream of something better,” Oprah says.

Oprah introduced Charice to one of the music industry’s most influential forces, Grammy Award-winning producer David Foster, who signed her to his 143/Reprise label and invited her to perform on his “David Foster and Friends PBS Show” in Las Vegas with Michael Bublé, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban. At the show in Las Vegas, Bublé joked to Charice, “I’m so glad that I don’t have to follow you. Because that would suck for me very badly. Because no matter how good I am, I know that you’d kick my butt.”

Giving Back
Charice remembers how much her family struggled when she was growing up in the Philippines, so when World Vision contacted her and asked her to sponsor a 7-year-old girl named Nicka, she said yes immediately.

“When they sent me Nicka’s story, I cried,” says Charice. “I wanted to help her to go to school. I wanted to help her because I was there once, too. I remember how hard things were when I was little. I was poor. I remember having to move to another house without anything. Even though she is so little, she wants to go to school so badly. She is really smart and loves school. She is an amazing girl.”

Not only does Charice pay for Nicka to go to school, “I give clothes and shoes to her and her family. I help them with living expenses. She’s always sending me letters and her grades to show me how well she is doing in school. I love that. She’s like my little sister.”

Two years ago, she met Nicka at a photo shoot for World Vision. “She didn’t know I was the one who was helping her until I met her. When she met me, she started to cry and said, ‘You are my idol! You are my favorite singer! I can’t believe you are in front of me right now and that you have been the one helping me!’ It was so emotional. I felt so happy to be able to help her. I wish I could help even more kids. If I could send all the kids to school who wanted to go but couldn’t, I would do it.”

Operation Smile Youth Ambassador
Last year, Charice got the chance to help even more kids when Operation Smile asked her to become one of its youth ambassadors. “They told me that Operation Smile started in the Philippines, so of course, I wanted to do it. I love helping kids and helping people so I said yes. I want to help all the kids that I can.”

“I am honored to help Operation Smile and the work they do in helping children around the world,” Charice says on the Operation Smile website. To have a chance to change the quality of even one child’s life and ensure a better future could not be more important.”

I left home for the 7 hour drive at 5:30 am.  I was to pick up a buddy of mine on the way whom I had asked to go with me since my wife is not interested in boxing, and has a troublesome knee that precludes walking long distances.  My friend had already seen the stadium, but jumped at the chance to see Manny fight.  So I picked him up and the closer we got to Dallas the more my anticipation grew.  We arrived at our hotel in mid-afternoon, and the fights did not begin with preliminary bouts until that evening, so we had plenty of time to drive around the area.

The Dallas Ranger baseball stadium, Six Flags Over Texas (a large theme park), and Cowboy stadium are all in the same proximity.  Only when we were approaching Cowboy Stadium did I realize I was looking at it over Ranger Stadium.  It is hard to envision how huge this complex is.  I have posted two pictures I shot from a distance below.  They do not do justice to its size, but do show its beauty.

Traffic was already becoming heavy around all sides of the stadium.  I noticed private parking that was about half a mile away, and signs were advertising $30 parking which I thought was quite expensive.  Only later did I learn the 14 lots on the stadium property cost $50 to park a car for this fight.  We made our way back to the hotel to rest and eat dinner before we went to the stadium because we heard food was very expensive inside the venue.  At the hotel were many Hispanics for a convention.  I noticed some Filipinos were there also.

About 5:00 pm we went to a nearby restaurant that had been recommended by a friend of mine who has season tickets to Cowboy games and goes there frequently.  It was a buffet and after we were seated and eating, I noticed the table next to us had four people.  It looked like a man, his companion, a teenager, and what must have been a grandmother.  I just had to find out if they were Filipino so I asked them.  “Oh yes”, they said.  They were going to the fight as well.  Well, you know what I asked next, don’t you?

I said, “Have you guys ever heard of Charice?”  The lady said “You mean Charice Pempengco, very excitedly”?  When I replied yes, they all got excited and said “Ya, she is a really good singer”.  Suddenly, it was as if we had known each other for years, hahaha.  So, yeah…..you know what’s coming next.  I said “Have you heard of Charicemania, her fan site?”  Again they said “Oh yes”.  I wanted to jump straight up.  Pushing my luck, I related “Have you heard of a writer on Charicemania named Max?”   This time I got blank looks and heads shaking no.  Dad gum it, hahahahahaha.  I was tempted to inquire of other Filipinos I saw in the restaurant, but for some reason, decided to pass.

We went back to the hotel and checked with the front desk about a shuttle service to carry us to the game and back.  Good news, three shuttles were continually going back and forth to the stadium until well after the fight.   We had 10 people riding on the shuttle with us, and we all started talking about the fight.  Everyone was unanimous in predictions that there was no question Manny would win.  It was just how long would his opponent last.

We left for the stadium about 6 pm and the shuttle pulled up as close as possible.  We still had to walk about 200 yards, but I was so excited by this time that I did not care.  Our tickets I had printed on my PC from Ticketmaster were accepted without any questions, but I noticed the guards acting like they were watching for what carry-ins one might have.  I had put my camera in my pants pocket and there was no problem getting by security.  I wondered what would have happened if I had worn the carrying case that hangs on my neck.

Below are pictures I took of the fight sign in front of the huge glass doors, and one of me by my buddy to prove I was there.

Observe the huge glass doors of the stadium.  Wow, I estimate they were at least 50 feet high, and there were five doors in all.  The doors can be completely opened and there are another set on the other side of the stadium.  It takes 30 minutes for the doors to fully open.  The roof of the stadium also opens, giving one a feeling as if you were outside we were told.

As we entered the stadium, I was impressed by how clean and well appointed it was.  The floor is concrete covered by a clear coat that gave it a very polished look.  Our seats were on the main level where we entered, but we wanted to look over the interior before we went to our seats.  There are seven levels plus the mezzanine level and suites on the top two levels.  The venue can accommodate 105,000 people, but was set up for 45,000 for this fight.  Some of the upper levels were closed off.  There were concession booths about every 100 feet, and plenty of rest rooms.   We walked as far around as we could go, but the various ticket areas were roped off, and we were limited how far around the venue we could walk.  Then we decided to rest for a while so we headed for our seats to watch some of the under card matches.  There were three more hours before the main event.

I cannot begin to tell you how overwhelmed I was when I gazed out at the “Jumbotron” as the astoundingly huge four sided TV screen is called.  Jumbo does not even begin to describe its immensity. Here are pictures of it.

The “MISTUBUSHI ELECTRIC” letters on top of the Jumbotron are about 10 feet high.  This should give a perspective of how mammoth it is, simply astounding.  The picture on the screen is crystal clear, better than any HD TV I have watched.  The videos I made of the action mainly were shot from the screen.  The bright blue light shining from corner of the screen was the only complaint I had about my whole experience.  Supposedly, its purpose is to prevent videotaping of the event, and you can tell when you view the videos that it did hamper me considerably.

The undercard fights continued until past 10 p.m. when the main event was scheduled.  We drifted in and out of our seats to exercise our legs, because the seats are quite close together preventing one from stretching their legs.  Also, I am a people watcher and out in the concourse, as time went by, it became more and more crowded.  I observed that at least two-thirds of the crowd was Filipino.  I have to say also that everybody was well behaved.  Occasionally, a chant would begin – Clottey, Clottey, Clottey from the Clottey fans.  Almost always that drew a Manny,  Manny, Manny response, hahaha.

Until about 9:00 pm the crowd was sparse….the seats were about one-third occupied.  Then as the main event time drew near, suddenly all of the empty seats disappeared.  The atmosphere was becoming electric.  You could sense the excitement building.  The last preliminary fight went the full ten rounds.  It seemed like forever.  Down on the main floor, the crowd was packed.  I should point out that floor seating sold for $3500 each (ouch).  Suddenly the Jumbotron started flashing celebrities on the screen.  First was Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys football team, and this magnificent stadium.  Then shots of some of Dallas greatest players and coaches…..Jimmy Johnson, Troy Aikman, Emmett Smith, and Barry Switzer to mention a few.  At each introduction, the applause and shouting let these greats know the crowd appreciated all of them.

10:00pm and the crowd was getting more and more excited.  Another Clottey chant followed by a thunderous Manny, Manny, Manny.  You should have been there.  Security clears a path from the entrance toward the ring.  Anticipation continues to grow, a constant noise from the crowd which by now occupied every available seat in the stadium plus some standing.  Wow, here come the Dallas Cheerleaders prancing into the arena to a thunderous beat emanating from the semi-tractor truck size speakers hanging from the ceiling.  Exciting is not the right adjective.  It was almost as if the overhead beams holding up the roof were dancing to the beat.  Finally, Joshua Clottey makes his appearance toward the ring, dancing to the beat.  Clottey fans screaming Clottey, Clottey, Clottey.  All of this is captured on the Jumbotron and in my video cam, although I could not hold my camera still.

Then, Manny Pacquiao, the WBO World Welterweight champion, appears and walks with his entourage toward the ring, and lights up the screen with his face beaming.  The crowd goes absolutely nuts screaming for Manny.  My chest was pounding from the excitement and the thunderous roar…..OMG unbelievable.  I tried to capture the excitement by videoing the action, but it is just not same as being there.  Please listen to the crowd as Arnel Pineda completes singing the Filipino National Anthem.  Ah, I can see it now in a future event…..Arnel and Charice singing the anthem to Manny at the next World Championship Fight.

The rest of my experience can best be described by asking you to watch the videos sequentially.  I apologize for the poor quality. This was my first attempt at filming and it obviously shows.  I tried to pan away from the action occasionally and give you a sense of the crowd, the excitement, and the pure unadulterated joy of the Manny Pacquiao fans.

As I’m sure you know, having 2 or 3 different versions of the videos can confuse new fans and interferes with our metrics for success.

YouTube search takes several things into consideration when ranking videos in search: views, comments, ratings, and date of upload. When there are several videos getting more views than the official one, it can affect not only views but YouTube rankings in their video charts.
