Charice appeared today at the Town Center, Denver area, where she performed five songs: I Love You, Pyramid, Top 40 Medley, Reset, and Baby (acapella). About 300-500 enthusiastic fans showed up. Charice was rockin’ !!

A great way to gauge the popularity of hot topics on the Internet on a daily basis is to check Yahoo’s homepage. With it’s popular web search engine to back up its data, and not to mention Yahoo ranks in the top 3 highest web trafficked sites on the net (1. Google, 2. Facebook, 3. NEW YORK — Charice has already won over the mom market.

The teen wunderkind from the Philippines has been wowing audiences with her big voice and Celine Dion covers on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and other shows for the last two years. This week, she appeared on Winfrey’s show for the fourth time.

But as she releases her self-titled debut album this week, Charice finds herself with a serious challenge as she tries to translate her success with an adult audience to her peers.

“I’ve been singing big songs, and this is the actually the first time they are going to hear me sing Justin Bieber-type of songs, Miley Cyrus-type of songs,” the 18-year-old said recently in her heavily accented English. “I’m just excited for all the teenagers to hear my album.”

Had Charice come along around the era of Dion or Whitney Houston, two of her idols, it would have been easier to make that move. Back then, big-ballad singers with towering voices dominated pop radio.

These days, it’s the grooves behind the big voice that matter.

David Foster, the Grammy-winning mentor behind Charice, probably knows that better than anyone. A legendary producer who has made hits for Houston, Dion, Barbra Streisand, Toni Braxton and dozens of other top names, Foster understands his sound isn’t what makes hits on pop radio anymore (though he still makes hits — he’s the producer behind multiplatinum stars Josh Groban and Michael Buble).

“I knew if I produced the album, it would be adult-oriented. It would skew older. It would be maybe a quick, easy sale, but ultimately, it’s very, very hard to skew younger after you start older, so we made a conscious decision to skew young first,” he said. “I don’t want to say that we crumbled under the pressure of having to go youthful, but I think we hit it square on.”

Though Foster and his sister Jaymes are the album’s executive producers, they left most of the music-making to younger writers and producers like Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, whose hits include Beyonce’s “Halo” and Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love.”

The album’s first single is “Pyramid,” featuring singer Iyaz.

“I just thought like, teenagers are falling in love … they love this very catchy and very romantic words from all these young artists,” Charice said. “That’s why I thought that this album … they are gonna love it, all the lyrics, all the melody and all the music.”

Can she find success outside of Asia?

So far, “Pyramid” is No. 2 on the dance charts, but it hasn’t yet translated to pop radio. Foster is aware of the challenge it takes to make a hit, but he thinks Charice has a lot to add to the scene.

“There is a lack of organic music right now, and it’s fine — it’s just the phase that we’re in,” he explains. “I think there is room for some more musicality.”

There’s no denying Charice has that. During a recent interview, the diminutive singer belted out “Pyramid” on request, performed a stirring rendition of Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” for an audience of four, then continued to sing — even on her way out the door.

Singing has consumed Charice — born Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco — since she was a child growing up in the Philippines. Raised with her brother by a single mother, she sang in local contests and appeared on TV talent shows in the Philippines and in South Korea.

Fans posted clips of her on YouTube, and she became a sensation. Soon, she was invited to sing on “Ellen,” then on “Oprah Winfrey,” and linked up with Foster.

So far, her rise has unfolded like a fairy tale. But Charice knows there are hurdles, like trying to capture U.S. audiences.

“It’s really, really hard … there’s a lot of great pop stars here. … They’re all talented,” she said. “I don’t know if Americans are going to love me because I’m from other country.”

But Foster said it’s only a matter of time before there’s an Asian superstar in the U.S., and he believes Charice might be the one.

“Being a great singer is not enough, and she has the entire package,” he said.

He adds: “She’s a little bit like Michael Jackson in the head … Michael Jackson was very soft-spoken and quiet and all that, but he was genius inside his head. He knew exactly where he was going, and she truly is the master of her own destiny.”

Charice Draws Praise Over Role in ‘Chipmunks’ Film

Even though she played a small role in Hollywood film “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” Filipino international singing sensation Charice was thrilled that some people have noticed her in the hit family movie.

In the sequel to the cartoon characters’ 2007 worldwide smash, Charice plays herself, the biggest rival of the chipmunks in a singing competition. The 17-year-old songstress sang Alicia Keys’ “No One” in the film distributed by 20th Century Fox.“Very happy po ako na some people are tweeting me na nakita po nila ako sa movie,” the singer told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

Charice was also happy over the sequel’s big success. Reuters reported that as of January 3 it ranked No. 3 in the worldwide box office, with $36.6 million sales record, and a 12-day total of $157.3 million.

The film has yet to be screened in the Philippines.

Like any Hollywood star, Charice had to audition to bag the role.

In her previous interview, Charice said the casting crew was impressed by her ability to modulate her voice to mimic that of a chipmunk. Reports also said that the director saw her performance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and was blown away by her voice.

Meanwhile, Charice is now in the United States to prepare for the release of her 2nd international single called “Pyramid,” which is part of her international album.

Charice’s debut album is expected to be launched either February or March of this year. There were reports that the formal launching will happen on Oprah, but Charice declined to confirm the speculations.

With close to a thousand, three hundred votes cast as of this writing, the runaway winner for our 2009 award is none other than Filipina singing sensation Charice Pempengco. With 55-percent of the vote, Charice handily outdistanced our first runner-up Efren Penaflorida who got 13-percent, followed closely by Corazon Aquino and Manny Pacquiao, each garnering 10-percent of the votes cast. Bringing up the rear in our poll were Gloria Arroyo with four-percent of the vote, and both Jun Lozada, and highly controversial finalist Andal Ampatuan Jr. with two-percent.

Of our seven finalists Charice seems to have truly captured the hearts of the Filipino people. And why not, listening to this young charming seventeen-year-old, one cannot help but be taken in by her charm, and her talent. One of the first things people notice about Charice is that she is unpretentious. She has no problem letting the world know about her humble beginnings and her struggles growing up in a single-parent household. Unlike local entertainers who immediately put on a facade of sophistication or wealth, this young Filipina with a golden voice has a strong sense of who she is and what she can achieve thus making it unnecessary for her to go out of her way to impress anyone.

Charice is a breath of fresh air for the Philippine entertainment industry. An industry which had initially given her short shrift for looking too “Pinay”. It took adoring fans from distant shores to jolt locals into the realization that there was real talent here which they should not ignore.

And yes, we realize that Charice may change, fame and fortune has a way of reshaping even the purest of spirits. But for now, we rejoice in the Charice we have. May she always retain that honesty, that sincerity, that love for her craft, and that truly great singing voice that has made her the overwhelming choice for our Person of the Year.

David Foster gets by with a little help from his friends. And by “gets by’’ we mean has made a fortune. The 15-time Grammy-winning composer-producer’s friends over the years have included Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Madonna, and Michael Buble, to name a handful of hundreds. The Canadian multi-instrumentalist has played with all four Beatles and starred on questionable reality shows like “The Princes of Malibu’’ – which has the dubious distinction of introducing the world to a young man named Spencer Pratt. Next Sunday a few Foster amigos – including ex-Chicago vocalist Peter Cetera, Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire, and new Filipino teen phenom Charice Pempengco – will join him at the Agganis Arena for a variety show-style stroll through the catalog of tunes he helped make famous like “After the Love Has Gone,’’ “The Glory of Love,’’ and “Un-Break My Heart.’’ He’ll also unveil the winner of his local talent contest, details of which can be found at www.namedrop.com. We caught up with Foster by phone at his home in Malibu, Calif.

Q. You’ve done one-off concerts in the past but as primarily a studio guy have you ever done a proper tour like this?
A. Never in my life.

Q. So what was the inspiration to hit the road?
A. I used to, and still do, a lot of charities [concerts] and I say that not to get a pat on the back but it’s just a win all the way around because I get to perform for free. Meaning I don’t care whether they like it or not [laughs]. So over the years I’ve kind of honed these hosting skills.

Q. (Foster briefly answers another call in which he talks about finishing work at 3 a.m.) So I have to ask, what did you work on until 3 this morning?
A. It’s actually called “The David Foster-Andrea Bocelli PBS Christmas Special.’’ We just finished editing and the guests are Mary J. Blige, Reba McEntire, Katherine Jenkins, Natalie Cole, and the Muppets.

Q. Do you ever wake up thinking, “I can’t believe this is my life’’?
A. [Laughs] The part that’s really fascinating to me, honestly, is that I’m still semi-relevant all these years later. Because the business eats its youth, you’re constantly trying to think like a 16-year-old which is impossible. I’m going to be 60 soon. I’ve really come to terms with the fact that I’m not going to be making the next Beyonce single. I love listening to that kind of music but I don’t know how to make it and I think the producers, writers, artists, and behind the scenes people that really hang themselves are the ones who don’t come to terms with the fact that they can’t stay relevant all the time. I don’t think people leave the music business, the music business leaves them. 

Q. Who is the dream artist that still eludes you? 
A. Stevie Wonder. I’m obsessed. I know exactly what to do with him to do a great album; and we’ve had dinner together and we’re circling it, but he walks to his own beat

MANILA – International singing sensation Charice has recently taken part in a photo exhibit held at the Fiamma Bar and Resto along Jupiter Street in Makati City.

Charice was one of the personalities who modeled for the “Face 2 Face” photo exhibit by young and enterprising beauty consultant Jake Galvez. The exhibit aimed to accentuate the hairstyle, dress code and skin tone of the new generation and present the other side of a person.

“Hindi ko akalain na maiiba ko ang sarili ko just like that,” (I didn’t realize that I could transform myself just like that.) Charice exclaimed.

“I did her hair for only five minutes,” confessed the younger Galvez, referring to the Taras Bulba-type hairdo he did on her.

Charice was wearing a Startrek-type of a gold jacket and tight dark jeans.

“Ang problema lang kay Charice, limitado ang magagawa mo sa kanya,” (The only problem with Charice is that, I am limited to what I could possibly do with her.) admitted Galvez.

He, however, was happy that he was able to show Charice as a fashionable young lady. Some reportedly even commented that she looked like a high class model.

Katrina Halili also modeled for Galvez. Her giant portrait was pasted on a black board for everyone to ogle at. Another model was Bianca Gonzales who, Galvez said, was the most flexible.

“Kahit anong ipagawa mo kay Bianca, versatile siya. (Bianca could carry out whatever you would like her to do, she is quite versatile.) She can be sexy and the next thing you knew, she can be so naïve and formal,” he said.

Galvez has been in the beauty and wellness business for the last 18 years. He started as an assistant to his uncle, beauty expert Tony Galvez. Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News
