Past singers who sang the Philippine National Anthem during Manny Pacquiao’s fights have taken flak from the National Historical Institute for their modified versions of “Lupang Hinirang. Charice, who Pacquiao personally picked to sing at his latest match, was spared from those criticisms. Being personally picked by boxing superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao to sing at the boxing event of the year is already a huge honor. But an even bigger bonus is Charice’s opportunity to sing for a star-studded audience and millions of people across the globe who are tuning in for the fight.
The Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley fight has reached atmospheric heights of buzz and promotion over the weeks, and as we’re nearing May 7, more and more details are released about the fight. Rapper Rick Ross confirmed on Twitter that he’ll be walking Pacquiao to the ring. International singing sensation Charice has won the approval of the hard-to-please National Historical Institute (NHI). In an interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Teddy Atienza, chief of NHI’s Heraldry Section, applauded Charice’s rendition of “Lupang Hinirang” during the inauguration of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
