“I knew of Charice because she was on ‘Oprah,’” began Ryan, casual in an all-white outfit in a Ritz Carlton meeting room with a stunning view of the Yucatan Peninsula coastline. “I saw those clips of her singing. One of the producers had heard of her, too, and met with her. I had to meet her, myself. She came in — she’s so tiny and cute. I thought we were just going to be introduced. I’d heard her album. She said, ‘Do you want me to sing for you?’ I said, ‘Okay.’ She opened her laptop… she had a demo—she hit play and she sang. She was in my office for half an hour. When that girl opens her mouth, angels fly out.”

“I was just so taken by Charice,” enthused the director, who created the series about a high school glee club, which won the Golden Globe Best TV Series-Musical or Comedy early this year and earned 19 nominations in the coming Emmy Awards. “I loved her spirit. I loved the story of her and her mother. She was just so proud telling me that she had bought her mother a house. So it went from just being a meeting to, ‘Oh, I have to put that girl in that show somehow.’ So we’re writing her a really good role. She’s going to start in the first episode of the new season. I’m really happy. That’s one of those things where somebody walks in and you’re just so touched that you say, ‘I have to write something for you.’ So that’s how it happened.

We asked Ryan, who also created the acclaimed FX drama series “Nip/Tuck” and directed the feature film “Running with Scissors,” to confirm if Charice’s character is a recurring one that we’ll see in coming seasons. He answered, “You never know with that show, but Charice’s role is the same size that Jonathan Groff’s character had this year—her character is not in every episode but she will be in a lot of episodes. She is the rival of Lea Michele’s character. That’s what Charice plays. I wanted to do a diva-off thing.”

Casting controversy

On the controversy about stories announcing that the Filipina singing sensation has been cast in the phenomenally popular show before it was made official, Ryan said with a smile, “I heard about that.”

Asked about a feature film version of “Glee,” Ryan demurred, saying, “I don’t know. I always thought that if I was going to do a ‘Glee’ movie, it would be like the Madonna episode. But it would be an event. We’re going to be on after the Super Bowl this year. We’re going to do a big tribute episode to a big artist and that’s going to be an event. I have a philosophy about television like, if you have an idea, don’t hold it back for six months because you may no longer be on the air by that time. Do it now. Use your weapons that you have now. That’s what makes for really lively, exciting television because there’s a lot of story that you move through, as opposed to little dollops.”

‘Glee’ tour

Ryan revealed plans for the next “Glee” concert tour. “The first tour was so big and unexpectedly popular,” he remarked. “I had never directed a tour before. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing but it worked. So next year, we’re going to do 45 to 60 dates. This year, we did 12 dates. We’re going to do a really big tour and maybe we’ll film that. Maybe we’ll do that as a movie. But I don’t know what a ‘Glee’ movie would be. Also, the thing about television is that you need to go away for a while. Let people miss you. If you’re on a tour and in a movie, they may be like, ‘Enough, it’s too much.’ So I don’t want to kill it.”

“Glee’s” second season, in which Charice debuts, is on Sept. 21. Javier Bardem, who co-stars in “Eat Pray Love,” and John Samos are the other stars appearing in the series set in McKinley High School. Also in store are episodes highlighting the songs of Britney Spears, a tribute to the cult camp classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and another ode to Madonna. There’s a lot of speculation as to who the “big artist” will be featured in the episode which Ryan mentioned will be shown after the Super Bowl.

Siam Pinoy (SP): You sing so powerfully, and with so much emotion, and so your fans are wondering where do you get your inspiration from? Some people ask, have you ever been in love?

Charice: No. (Laughs) But, I’m getting inspiration, of course, from my family. And from the very beginning, of course, God. And then, the people. They’re my inspiration.

SP: Do you now hope for the Grammy’s?

Charice: Of course! (Laughs) That’s one of my goals. I know it’s kind of hard. You have to take more challenges, and stuff. But of course, that’s one of my dreams.

SP: Now that you have your own album, people really look forward to that, because they want to hear your own original music. And now that you are an undisputed star, what else do you wish for, at such a young age?

Charice: I wish to do more things. I wanna be able to experience more things like, be number 1 in Billboard, share more songs with people, release more albums, collaborate with other artists… a lot of things, still.

SP: To all the Filipinos in Thailand, can you shout out to all the Filipinos in Thailand?

Charice: Hi, sa lahat ng mga Filipinos. Maraming maraming salamat po, sa suporta po, at… I can’t wait na makapag perform po, for the first time, in Thailand. (Hi, to all the Filipinos. Many, many thanks for all your support. I can’t wait to perform, for the first time, in Thailand.)

SP: You started really, really young. You joined singing contests, and now you’re 18, do you have anything to share, like any valuable lesson that you have learned growing up as a singer? What is your advice to those kids who want to be like you?

Charice: I just wanna say that you have to work hard to get to your goal. There are many challenges that will come to you. Like, never give up. You have to work everyday. You just have to wait patiently. Of course, love your parents, because they will always be your number one supporter for your whole life. Always be humble, and always remember those people who have actually helped you from the very beginning.

SP: You’re only going to sing five to six songs today, but your fans would always want more. What else can we look forward to, in the future, from Warner Music Thailand, and you, in terms of shows?

Charice: I am coming back here in October to do the David Foster and Friends, right here in Bangkok. Of course, aside from me, there are other singers, of course, being David Foster and Friends. There’s Natalie Cole, Peter Cetera, so it’s gonna be…it’s gonna be my second time (here).

SP: How do you cope with your hectic schedule, especially in terms of your studies, particularly since now, you’re flying all over the place?

Charice: I know it’s kind of hard. I mean, about school, it’s pretty hard. But, schedules, it’s pretty easy for me. You just have to go online and do school for two hours everyday. Sometimes, I don’t get to go home until 12 midnight, from morning to 12 midnight, so sometimes, we just have no time to do school. It’s really, really hard. So, like I really have to really work hard for school.

SP: Most of the time, especially, in the Philippines, they want you to sing exactly like the original singer. So what can you say to people who expect too much from you, and people who want you to be somebody else, like wanting you to copy another artist?

Charice: I must say, those people do not really understand what I’m singing for, for who I am, you know. You know, this is me. This is what I can do. And I don’t want to copy someone else, too. My goal is, to be able to have people recognize me as “Charice”. Not someone else, and oh, she’s like this.  I wanna be like, I want people to go like, “Charice, oh, I know her songs.”

So, I’m really trying my best…still trying my best, to be able to do like, my own style. Right now, gotta be honest, I don’t want to act like perfect. So, I’m still like, getting some style from Beyonce, but kind of like doing it in my own way, coz I don’t want people to go saying, “She can really sing like Beyonce!”, you know. (Laughs)

So, I’m getting some styles, but I’m doing it in my own way. But, I got discovered singing songs by someone else. I can’t just take it away. It’s like, part of my life.

SP: Charice, being from Siam Pinoy, which is visited by Filipinos and Thais alike, we can say there are many people out there right now, who’ve come to see you. Some of them probably missed work or school, just to hear you sing. You have so many fans in Thailand, both Thais and Filipinos, what is your message to them?

Charice: Ang masasabi ko lang po, sa mga kabataan, sa mga estudyanteng umabsent, bukas na lang ulit kayo pumasok, tsaka bigyan niyo na lang ng tsokoleyt yung titser niyo. (The only thing I can say to the young people, to the students who were absent from school, you just go back to school tomorrow, and then just give your teacher chocolates). – This, Charice says jokingly, and with a hint of embarrassed gratitude at the lengths her fans would go, in order to hear her sing and watch her perform.

Thank you, thank you so much for all the support. That makes me feel like, to do more, to do my best, not only for now, for the future, too. And thank you, thank you for making me feel so special.

Everywhere I go, there’s a lot of Filipinos…and of course, to my Thai fans, thank you so much! And for all my Thai fans who actually came at the airport yesterday, they actually came earlier. They were so sweet. I can’t wait to perform, for the first time, for you guys, later today. Thank you so much for staying in my life. Just like a ‘pyramid’.

SP: And your fans, we don’t think they expect you to be perfect. They just want you to keep on singing, and that brings them so much happiness.

Charice: Oh, thank you! But of course, I feel like, I have goals for my personal life. I still want to finish my studies, and to be a lawyer, and have my own business. But singing, you know, would always stay in my heart, my soul and heart. But I think, I still want to have my own (different) career. That’s… another way…

SP: Your mom has always been your best coach, your biggest support and assistance, and your best friend, what can you say to her now?

Charice: She’s not here, but…which is good. (Laughs) I’m nervous.

I mean, I just want to thank her for everything that she did. And I mean, of course, ‘sorry’ sometimes, you know. But I feel like, so secure when she’s around. I feel like, no one can have a go at me and try to bring me down. I feel so strong. I feel like she’s my hero. A lot of people like ask me, when you compare her to a super hero, so you think, who is she?

She’s like Wonder Woman. She’s like my best friend…my dad. We’re really close. We’re just three in the family. She’s a single mom, but still, you know. Like all these years, she’s the one, who’s actually been taking care of us.

SP: You spend more time in Los Angeles, than in the Philippines, are there plans for you becoming a US citizen?

Charice: There’s no place like home. I’d rather just go home to the Philippines for only one day than staying (the whole time) in the US. I still love going to school. And you know…we don’t know. You know, Philippines would always be my number one home place. People in the Philippines, of course, would always be my number one supporter. So that’s why the Philippines is still my home town.

SP: And perhaps Thailand could be your second home?

Charice: I actually felt like, when I saw the tuk-tuk… What’s that. The tricycle? (The Philippines and Thailand share one similar form of transport, which is a motorcycle with added fittings to sit at least 3 more passengers).
I was like, wow, am I home? And my mom was talking to me and she’s like, ‘I can live here’. (Laughs)

SP: Can you say one Thai word now… any Thai word?

Charice: Sawadee kha. Kap khun ka. (Laughs)

SP: That’s great, considering you only came yesterday, and this is your first time in Thailand.

You have been on stage with Celine Dion, Oprah, and of course, David Foster…who else would you like to be with on stage? Meron pa bang natitira? (Are there other stars left whom you have not performed with?) It seems you have been with all the big stars already.

Charice: I would love to sing, of course, with Beyonce and Lady Gaga.

Charice: I’m gonna sing ones coming from my album. I will sing one cover song, which I dedicate to all the people. I’m not going to say who the artist is, it’s too obvious for me to say it.

SP: Your final message?

Charice: Thank you for coming here, and hanging out with me, and I hope you’ll enjoy the show. Thank you so much for all the support. Sa mga Pilipino po, maraming maraming salamat sa suporta. (To all the Filipinos, many, many thanks for your support.)I can’t wait to come back here and sing for you, and perform for you all.

SP: And with that, our short time with Charice came to a close. We are left wanting for more, from this young, petite, beautiful young lady, with an iron will to weather all the challenges that get in between her and her dreams for her family. Her timing couldn’t have been more perfect, for now, more than ever, our young people needed a role model, to remind them of how precious it is to value one’s family and one’s roots.

Charice, does not only wow audiences with her voice; her own aura speaks of greatness from within, one that’s borne out of being raised with a lot of love for God, for family and for country, gratitude for those who have helped her dreams to come true, and a maturity beyond her years. There is no stopping this young lady… not the haters, not the critics, for she will only use them to draw more strength from, to survive, to thrive, and finally, to achieve even more! She’s one great Filipina!

Not Most People Series: Interview With Charice

She’s not most people…indeed! As soon as the 18-year old songbird’s self-titled debut album , “Charice” landed #8 at the Billboard’s Hot 200 Album chart,  this Filipina singer truly made her home and the rest of the Asian race proud. In support to promote her album, Charice made Asian stints in Korea, Philippines, Japan and of course in the Land of Smiles, Thailand which was coordinated well by Warner Music Thailand. A supposed Malaysian tour after her stint here in Bangkok was postponed due to unavoidable urgent matter in the US.

By some strange stroke of luck, “I’m Not Most People!” (where Charice is a no stranger with already a number of features already blogged about her) got an invite from Warner Music Thailand for a group interview with Charice on the same day of July 23 where she will perform at Siam Discovery.

Charice finally arrived. She sat so comfortably with a huge backdrop behind her with the logo of Pullman Hotel where she was checked-in. Yadda, yadda, yadda, I let the others to ask Charice first for me to dig-in some worthy, on-the-spot replacement questions for her.

Prior to my first uttered, impromptu question, Charice was asked by a Thai media man if how does she feels now that they call her the “New Voice”. So I followed up by throwing her a query if she knows how many octaves does she have. “I have no idea, you mean like G flat and all that? I have no idea,” as she answers with sweet smile and giggles.

My follow-up question to her was about her mimicking other artists. Does she have a newly found fellow celeb to mimic this time?  “Oh,” that’s her initial reaction accompanied by another giggle. ”Perhaps you can give us a sample,” I told her. “So far, none yet. Still the same artists like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, The Chipmunks,” she replied.

A few more moments passed by, I noticed that Charice was not just confident answering all those questions thrown at her but she usually accompanies it with either a big smile or laughter. Comfy as it may seem, Charice was having a nice time with us…and so did us.

As soon as she heard the name Carlo Orosa, “Oh yeah,” were the first two words that came out of her mouth. I told her, “My next questions actually came from Carlo Orosa. Yeah? He asks: ’How do you handle your new found success? What advice will you give to aspiring singers and what message can you give to your “Little Big Star” friends from where you started?’”

Charice responds, “Uhhhh…” with a long pause. As she knew that her interviewer, yours truly, is a Filipino like her, she then decided to reply in Taglish (Tagalog-English).

“Yun nga po tulad nga po ng sabi ko kanina (like what I’ve said a while ago), you really have to work hard. Kasi nga pag minadali mo sya, lalo syang babagal. It gets slower and slower so you have to work hard. You have to do it like don’t just sing it and be like a primadonna like something’s gonna happen but then you’re not moving. You have to move, you have to do it, you have to work hard.”

Hedda of Siam Pinoy.Net then told Charice that her mom has always been her coach, her best friend. “I just wanna thank her for everything that she did. I feel like no one would dare and try to bring me down if I’m with her. I felt so secured. A lot of people are asking me if I could compare her to a superhero I’d say she’d be Wonder Woman…”

“Not Darna?” I butted in and another reason for those fellow Thai reporters to knock their heads on the wall for this another clueless persona. Then Charice laughs again, “Wonder Woman.” The latter I assume most of these Thai journalists are familiar with.

So finally, a Thai reporter finally speak up and asked her what song would she dedicate to her mom.? “I think I would sing for her “You Light Up My Life”.

Then another Thai reporter asked her if she will change her style on her second album. “Well my first one is Pop and R&B. I mean we’re not actually planning yet for the second album but we’re looking for a new song, a second single which is actually not part of the album. We’re looking for a dance song faster than ‘Pyramid’ because dance is actually “in” in the US right now. Something like Lady Gaga,” in which she admitted later on that she wanted to collaborate with given a chance.

I butted once again but this time with a relevant question from the current one. “I personally love “Nothing”, I confessed to her. ”Oh yeah. I love that song. Yeah,” she seconded.

“I kept playing that song again and again and again in my iPod. Do you think this will be your next single? Do you have any idea? Like what you’ve said, this is more dancey,” I asked.

“But we are really looking for a new song that is not part of the album…but I love that song actually.  When they created that song it was of a slower tempo. And David think that they should make it a little faster and it went well.”

Then I continued by asking her about her song, ’Reset’ in which she actually co-wrote. “Yes, yes,” she excitedly replied.

“You actually rapped the Tagalog lyric parts of that one,” I added. ”I was talkin’ to David and he was like, “There should be a Tagalog word here,” everyone laughs. “A few kids are gonna kill you if you are not gonna do that,” she said in a very humorous way.

“Are we seeing Charice to compose more song?” my follow up query. “I do love composing songs actually. But not right now. I mean, c’mon, he’s David Foster. I’m just enjoying right now and maybe on the next album.”

Yadda, yadda, yadda, I gave way for others to ask Charice until it’s my time to ask her again a very important thing that she would like to impart to my beloved readers, particularly for those “not most people” like her, like me, like us.

“Charice I’m from ‘I’m Not Most People!’ blog. And I have blogged and featured you many, many times as a matter of fact, I specifically included you in my “Not Most People Series”…so meaning to say you are unique in your own sense and your own style and I’m so proud of you,” I honestly told her.

She humbly reciprocated me with a smile and by saying, “Thank you.”

Then down to the bottom line, ”What do you think is your message to my readers. You know, for those who are unique but they cannot express themselves or they have some dreams but they are afraid of something. What is your message for them?”

“I used to be like that when I was younger but I always felt like I need to show my talent. I always thought that maybe people won’t like it (her singing) but then you have you’re parents who will always be your #1 supporter and they will push you to carry on. And I realized that maybe someday, my talent will be noticed too (in which she obviously and triumphantly did). I think the best is to wait patiently, don’t be shy to show it (talent)…“

“…if you have it, flaunt it,” I added.

“If you feel like you have it, prove it. You know. It doesn’t matter if other people won’t like it. I mean they’re just jealous because you have it and they don’t  have it,” she advised.

“Yeah but not most people can sing like you?” I argued in a comical way and  we ’dueted’ with our laughs once again.

“Hindi naman, (Not really!)” she humbly replied in a very shy manner. “Every single person in the world has their own talent even though it’s not seen. Wala namang masama kung ita-try (No harm in trying). Yun lang yun eh (that’s it!). Try and try until you succeed. Wag lang makikinig sa mga negative things kasi kasama yun eh (Just don’t listen to any negative things you’ll hear, because that’s part of it.). Kasama yan talaga. Sila yung magta-thrive kung talagang malakas ka (That’s really part of it, they will thrive if you’re really that strong).  And I’d say that you just have to be really, really be strong,” she emphasized coming from her heart.

Then another Thai reporter asked, ”Many people ask if you have a boyfriend?” speechless Charice then immediately responded with a super laugh instead.

“No. I’m not ready right now because I’m enjoying what I’m doing right now. I’m lovin’ it. Actually that’s my boyfriend (music) you know. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking, painful, but I’m in love.”

“So there’s someone special?” I heckled again. Everyone laughs. “My music. My music is my other half,” she finally clarified.

Seeing the “time is up” signal from the Warner Music Thailand exec, Hedda finally asked on our behalf if what is her message to all of us who were there and to her fans.

“Thank you for coming here and hanging out with me. I hope you’ll enjoy the show. Thank you so much for all the support especially sa mga Filipino po, maraming, maraming salamat po sa suporta (esp. to Filipinos, thank you very much for your support). Can’t wait to come back here for David Foster’s concert in October,” she gratefully announced.

“And your album?” the Thai reporter reminded her.

“Yes. My self-titled debut album, “Charice” out now under Warner Music produced by David Foster and a lot of composers collaborated in this album like  Carole Bayer Sager, Diane Warren, Ryan Tedder who actually wrote “Halo”…”

“Billy Steinberg (Madonna’s “Live A Virgin”, Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”),” I reminded her. “Love him,” I added.

“Yes,” she smiles. “The Corrs,” she recalled. “In Love So Deep,” I uttered.

“Yes, yes. I think what’s interesting about this album is that there’s a lot of songs each with different emotions like there’s a love song, a heartbreak song, an inspiration song and a special song for me, ‘In This Song’ in which David Foster co-wrote and it’s about the story of my life. Thank you so much,” she ended with deepest appreciation.

The Day I Met Charice

I apologize to the reader for my frantic style of writing. My friends here know that I am the ultimate Charice fan. Charice’s album is always playing and on replay mode during office hours on my work station computer.

There was this contest for passes to see Charice showcase her new album before the media biggies in NYC which I joined but did not win. The last time Charice visited Us Weekly Online w/ Ian Drew, which I believe was recorded in our office studio just next door to where I sit and I missed that entirely. And the hall of fame song writer’s awards where Charice honored her godfather David Foster by singing his most famous song at the awards night. The least I wanted to do there was to see Charice walking on the red carpet. Because all this happened in the city I am in made it bitter sweet not seeing Charice in person.

I was imagining I could by chance meet the mother and daughter in Times Square. Impossible! It was too hot outside! I also played the Charice trivia game and was given the title Ultimate Fan hoping to win the chance to meet Charice one weekend too.

First time I saw Charice in the flesh was riding on the Macy’s float in 2008 which I took a video of and was when I officially became a fan. Next I saw her perform at the Prudential Arena in a DFF concert tour last year. And just like you charicemanians spend hours watching Charice Youtube videos. My only wish is to meet Charice face to face and have a complete fan experience.

Then I read from the pages of Charicemania that Charice is flying to the US again to meet magazine publishers including my company’s Rollingstone magazine. That was Monday morning when she left the Philippines and will be arriving at night of the same day. So I calculated that she will be meeting these publishers starting Tuesday. She said she will work for two days making that Tuesday or Wednesday when she may come to our office building. She did not come Tuesday or Wednesday, but learned from a reliable source that Charice is scheduled to appear Thursday 2PM. So imagine me and my co workers being able to meet and greet with Ms. Charice upclose and personal with the timely help of my friends and coworkers that Thursday.

I got a sudden personal invite from one of the senior editors to sit and watch Charice perform only that day, two hours before she was to arrive and only because by a slim chance another editor called my supervisor friend about an entirely different matter and the name of Charice was inserted in the conversation. She mentioned out of context that I was dying to meet Charice.

I was prepared with my Charice cd, Pentel pen (July 6), Sony Cybershot camera (July7), even brought a white fedora hat for her as a gift just in case (July 8); things any fan should have when they meet Charice.

I was able to have pictures and video taken from the reception area to the board room also because the person in charge of security to bring Charice’s group to our floor is a friend who knew I am a big fan and called me only minutes before our idol’s arrival. I did not get that call by the way but my office mates did, so my friends went looking for me in a hurry. And this was happening while I was waiting at the end of the building where I was not aware it’s not supposed to take place. I knew that 2PM is the set time of the meet. I got suspicious that I was at the wrong area. So I decided to go to the reception area after I circled the whole 2nd floor wondering what is going on. He, the one in charge of security whispered to Charice that she has one of her biggest fan in the building dying to see her while riding the elevator.

So I learned from my friends that we have to be ready to meet Charice at the reception area and that I was the only non editorial staff allowed to be inside the board room to watch Charice perform. I pulled my camera out of my trousers and got ready to shoot.

Elevator doors opening no Charice yet. The door number one opened and I saw Ms.Charice with Liz Rosenberg and an assistant. Bloopers! I pressed the off button instead of snapping a picture of our idol. Liz Rosenberg noticed how nervous we were, but she realized we were fans. She offered to take a picture of me with Charice. Wow! But Bloopers again! I dropped my copy of Charice’s cd for my autograph request. It was captured in one shot. Clumsy me!

My face was contorted. My pen and cd and envelop spilled on the floor with a bang. I hurriedly gathered everything back to an envelope. Liz Rosenberg patiently waited and shot a perfect picture of me and Charice. Bing!

Charice was all calm. I believe this has happened before in her many meet and greet sessions. These were not captured in my video clips. Watch my 6 part videos for everything else.

After she sang Halo I approached her to request an autograph on my copy of her latest music cd. I shook her hand, smiled, looked her in the eye and said “I’ll see you at your concerts”. She gave me a big smile. They were still conversing with the editors when I left the room. I believe the big topic for this meeting is about her being in Glee. So I left quietly with a huge sense of satisfaction. And I thank the Lord for one great and unforgettable day.

Expect, the Lord willing, that Charice will appear on Us Weekly issues repeatedly come Glee season. Who knows she might even be featured in Rollingstone magazine. I only wish but it would come as the biggest surprise if she by any chance happen to land any of the covers of all these popular American magazines. The end.

On a personal tip, I’m able to get her to reveal her new obsession — Pinkberry! “Pinkberry is my new thing,” she tells me. Her favorite? “Mango flavor! Can’t get enough of it!”

As ever, her courage and conviction get her through. She says the best advice she’s ever gotten is simple: “Never give up on your dream. Stay focused.”

May 25, 2010 — “…And every step we took we’ve grown/ Look how fast the time has flown/ A journey to a place unknown/ We’re going down in history…” The lyrics to pint-sized pop phenomenon Charice’s #1 dance song, “Pyramid,” couldn’t fit her own rise to fame story more perfectly.

Born to sing, Charice entered countless singing competitions mimicking her idols until it finally landed her a spot on Oprah. When the queen of daytime TV got a hold of her pipes, the music ‘biz knew they had to act fast because this Charice was going to go far. Next thing she knew, Charice was working with proclaimed producer David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) and recording her self-titled debut album (out now, buy here). Below, myMag caught up with Charice to talk about her recent birthday bash, performing with Iyaz and her secret guilty pleasure.

Q: You recently turned 18 – happy birthday! How did you celebrate?
Charice: I celebrated it in New York with my friends. We had a party in my hotel room and my fans joined online.

Q: When did you first discover your love of music, and when did you realize you wanted to make it your life?
Charice: At the age of four my mother discovered me singing on the kitchen table. I’ve wanted to sing ever since then, I haven’t stopped from that moment on.

Q: Who were some of the musicians you grew up admiring, and what did you take from watching them that you’ve incorporated into your own music and stage performances?
Charice: I grew up listening to the big three: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey! I’m famous for singing their songs. I entered 100 singing competitions singing their songs.

Q: You recently released your debut album, Charice. How does it feel to have accomplished that?
Charice: Amazing! I now have my own songs, which is awesome.

Q: You’ve worked very closely with 15-time Grammy award-winning songwriter and producer David Foster on your album. What kind of mentor has he been to you?
Charice: He’s become my mentor and godfather. What a blessing to have worked and gotten to know David Foster!

Q: What advice has he given you as a rising star?
Charice: Keep your feet on the ground.

Q: Oprah Winfrey has played a big part in your success; you have appeared on her show four times! What have those experiences meant to you?
Charice: I call her my fairy godmother! I owe her so much!

Q: What was it like to work with Iyaz on your hit single “Pyramid”?
Charice: He’s an amazing human being and artist. We get on great and laugh all the time. Hey, Iyaz!

Q: How do you feel that you can relate to that song?
Charice: I can relate to growing strong from the bottom up. Having a strong belief in yourself – nothing can knock you down.

Q: How did you react when you heard it hit # 1 on the Billboard Dance Charts?
Charice: It was amazing! I have been promoting that song in dance clubs, so it was nice to see it succeed.

Q: What do you hope people get out of your music?
Charice: Happiness and joy.

Q: What’s something that most people would be surprised to hear about you?
Charice: I’m a horror movie fanatic!..

Charice Pempengco is surfing the airwaves all over the world with her very first international single, “Pyramid.” But even before finally breaking into the mainstream, she has already received recognition from big name media stars like Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey. At the age of 16, she sang a duet with her idol, Celine Dion, who expressed so much admiration for her. At 18, Charice is living the dream, and she’s only just begun. (Fun trivia: Did you also know that the May issue of Total Girl, Cosmopolitan Philippines’ little sister magazine, with Charice on the cover has been picked up by international showbiz site, Just Jared?)

Her life in the limelight has not been without its ups and downs, though, and Charice tells us all about them.

You’re just 18 and you’ve already accomplished so much. What else do you want to do?

Sa ngayon po, gusto ko na lang po munang ipagpatuloy ang ginagawa ko. Siyempre nakakapagod po, pero gusto ko po talagang mag-focus muna sa mga ginagawa ko bago ko dagdagan.

[Charice: Right now, I just want to focus on what I am currently doing. Of course, I get a bit tired, but I really want to first focus on my current activities before thinking of venturing into new things.]

What do you think got you to where you are today?

‘Yung gift po ni God, kasi na-discover ako sa YouTube, may nag-post ng video ko, and na-discover nila ako kasi parang kino-compare nila ako kay Whitney Houston, so siguro pasalamat na lang ako sa talent na binigay ni God. Hindi ko pa naaabot ‘yung top, pero siguro narating ko ang mga nararating ko ngayon kasi mas nagpapalakas sa akin ang mga negative na naririnig ko. Lagi ko nga po sinasabi, kung iinisin nila ako, parang iinisin ko rin sila (laughs). Parang, “O sige, ipagpapatuloy ko ang ginagawa ko as long as may mas maraming may gusto.”

[Charice: It’s God’s gift… because I got discovered in YouTube, someone posted a video of me and they discovered me, comparing me to Whitney Houston. So, I guess I am just thankful for the talent that God gave me. I haven’t reached the top, but perhaps my accomplishments right now is also due to the strength I draw even from all the negative comments I hear. I always say- if they try to annoy me, then I’ll try to annoy them back (laughs)… I say “I will continue what I am doing as long as there are more people that appreciate it.”]

What are these “negative” things? Comments?

Opo. Tanggap ko naman. Siyempre sasabihin nila ‘di daw ako deserving, masasakit magsalita. Sasabihin pangit daw ako. Bakit daw ako nadiscover, birit lang daw ako nang birit, gan’on. So madami po talaga. Diyos ko! ‘Yung iba pa po sobrang sakit magsalita.

[Charice: Yes- I try to just take it… some say I am not deserving, hurtful words, like I am ugly, questioning why I got discovered while all I do is just belt songs. There are a lot… O my God, others are really quite hurtful.]

Was there ever a time that you cried over what has been said about you?

Hay naku sobra, nung talagang nag-uumpisa pa lang, ang dami po talaga. Napaiyak ako, pero na-realize ko rin na may mga fans na sumusuporta sa akin, sila pa ‘yung nag-explain. “Mga inggit lang ‘yon,” so siyempre, sa kaka-advise nila sa akin, nasanay na po ako.

[Charice: Oh Yes, a lot of times! Especially when I was just starting, there were really a lot. I cried over it, but then I also realized that there are a lot of fans that do support me. They were even the ones explaining to me saying, “They are just jealous.” So, of course, after all their advices to me, I just got used to it.]

What inspires you?

Una sa lahat talaga si God. ‘Yung mom ko, kasi kahit saan ako pumunta, talagang kasama ko siya. Siyempre, ‘yung fans na sumusuporta talaga. Isa ‘yon sa mga talagang inspirasyon ko kasi hindi lang sa pagkanta, para ko na rin silang mga kabarkada.

[Charice: First of all, it’s really God. Then my Mom, because she’s always with me everywhere I go. Of course, also my fans who really support me. That’s really one thing that inspires me because it’s not just for their admiration for how I sing, but I also feel that they are my close friends.]

Of all the women you’ve worked with in Hollywood, who inspires you?

Siyempre si Celine Dion. Sa tagal niya sa showbiz, wala talagang issue sa kanya.

Pero nagulat talaga ako kay Paris Hilton. Kasi ‘di ba parang ang tingin natin sa kanya medyo bad girl, gan’on. Nung na-meet ko siya, hindi ko ine-expect na gan’on siya ka-simple. I mean, sa pananamit niya hindi siya simple. ‘Yung mga kilos niya, ang simple-simple ‘pag off-cam. Nung time na nakita niya ako, nagpa-picture siya sa ‘kin dahil nakita daw niya ako sa Oprah. Naninigas talaga ako, ‘di ko in-expect na sobrang bait pala niya, na nakipag-hang out pa siya sa amin, nagkukuwento siya. Nagjo-joke pa siya na hindi raw siya masama, hindi raw siya bad, gan’on. Na-inspire ako sa kanya, doon ko napatunayan na nag-a-act lang pala siya sa harap ng camera. Mabait pala siya.

Hindi ko pa siya nami-meet pero isa siya sa mga inspirasyon ko, si Beyonce, isa ‘yon sa mga legend talaga. ‘Yun po, sila pong tatlo.

[Charice: Of course, Celine Dion. Even though she has been in show business for a long time, there was no real big issue about her.]

[But I really got surprised with Paris Hilton. Because even though she has this ‘bad girl’ reputation, when I met her, I did not expect her to be so ‘simple’. I don’t mean by the way she dresses but more so with how she acts, especially off-cam. The time when she saw me, she asked to have a picture taken with me and said that she saw me on Oprah. I froze, I did not expect that she was so nice, then she even spent time hanging-out with us, telling stories and all. She was even joking that she is really not bad, that she’s really not a ‘bad girl’. I got inspired by her. I realized that she was just acting a part on camera. But she was actually very nice. ]

[I haven’t met her, but she is also one of my inspirations, Beyonce. She is one I really consider a legend. That’s it- the three of them.]

What was it like to share the stage with Celine Dion?

Naku, ate (laughs)! Nung backstage pa lang, doon niya ako pina-stay sa dressing room niya tapos kinukuwento niya sa ‘kin, pinakita niya sa akin lahat ng makeup niya, ‘yung mga makeup daw niya, mula daw 19 years old siya hanggang ngayon ‘yun pa rin ‘yung gamit niya! Tapos nung time na nasa stage na kami, hindi ko makita, pero nanginginig talaga ‘yung tuhod ko! As in talagang, giniginaw na ako, kinabahan pa ako, hindi ko alam kung ano ‘yung gagawin ko, pero nag-start na ‘yung song, nakalimutan ko na lahat. Nung nagsigawan na ‘yung tao, biglang sabi ko, “Okay, kailangan kong gawin ‘yung best ko kasi once in a lifetime lang ‘to.”

Tinapos ko pa po ‘yung concert bago ko siya ulit nakausap. Naiyak siya, niyakap niya ako, sinabi niya nakikita daw niya ‘yung sarili niya sa akin.

[Charice: Oh my! (laughs). Even while I was at the backstage, she let me stay in her dressing room, and she was telling me stories, she showed me all her make-up. She was telling me, the make-up she used as early as when she was 19 years old are still the ones she uses up to now! Then, the time when we were already on stage, I didn’t realize it, but my knees were literally shaking! I mean really, I really felt cold, and I was really very nervous, I didn’t know what to do. But when the song started- I forgot all about that (being nervous). When the crowd started screaming, I said to myself, “Okay, I have to give it my best because this only happens once in a lifetime.”

It’s not until the end of the concert when I got to talk to her again. She cried and she hugged me. She said she saw herself in me.]

Natatakot ka ba na malalaos ka one day? [Are you afraid that one day, you’d lose your popularity?]

Actually, hindi naman po ako takot kung mawala man po. Handa naman po ako. ‘Yung pinasok ko po ngayon, hindi po ako nag-e-expect na magtatagal po talaga ako. Hindi ako nag-e-expect too much. Lagi kong iniisip na nag-uumpisa lang ako. Habang nandito ako, nag-iipon ako nang nag-iipon. Ayoko man isipin, pero posibleng mangyari, kaya habang nandito pa, habang mainit pa, nag-iipon ako.

[Charice: Actually, I am not really afraid of that. I am prepared. I don’t have too much expectation, not even of lasting long in the industry. I always put in my mind, as if I am only starting. While I am here, I try to save up. I don’t really want to think about it, but it can happen, so while I am here, I save up.]

How do you inspire women? What do you think women see in you that inspires them?

Siguro ‘yung tiyaga. Kasi kung napanood man nila talaga ‘yung life story ko, parang hindi nila mai-imagine kung bakit hanggang ngayon ang tibay-tibay ko. Biruin niyo, four years old pa lang ako, iniwan na kami ng Dad ko. Ang saklap pa talaga ng nangyari sa amin noon, nung naghiwalay sila. Nag-singing contest ako, sobrang hirap. Nakaranas kami na talagang lumipat kami na wala kaming dala kundi damit lang at ‘yung radyo ko na napanalunan.

[Charice: Maybe, perseverance. Because if they know my life story, they would understand why I seem to be so strong. Imagine, I was only four years old when my Dad left us. It was really devastating what happened to us that time, when my parents separated. I joined singing contests- it was really very difficult. We even experienced moving in to a new place with nothing except for our clothes and a small radio I won from a contest.]

What’s your favorite activity aside from singing?

Mahilig po ako mag-record-record, mag-cover ng songs, pero hindi ko shine-share kasi nahihiya ako.

[Charice: I like recording and cover songs. But I don’t show them to others, because I get embarrassed.]

Any advice you want to tell our readers?

Kailangan lang talaga ‘yung tiyaga sa life. Mostly ang problema ng mga tao, nawawalan sila ng pag-asa. May ibang tao na gusto nila agad-agad. Hindi gan’on kadali.

[Charice: That we just need to have patience in life. Mostly, the problem is people lose hope in life. There are a lot of people who want things right away. It is not that easy.]

What makes you fun and what makes you fearless?

Siyempre ‘yung trabaho ko po. ‘Yung ginagawa ko po, rine-represent ko po ‘yung Philippines. ‘Yung masuklian ko lang ‘yung mga Pinoy na nakikita ko sa ibang bansa, na proud sila sa akin, na parang nakikilala ‘yung Philippines dahil sa akin (at kay Sir Manny Pacquiao). Nawawala ang takot ko na kahit ano’ng sabihin ng ibang tao na hindi ko kaya, ganyan, as long as maraming nagmamahal sa akin.

[Charice: Of course, my work. With what I do, I represent the Philippines. Just the chance to give back to the Filipinos, especially those in other countries who are proud of me saying that people get familiar with the Philippines because of me (as well as with Sir Manny Pacquiao). Then my fears for what other people might say, on the things they say I can’t do, disappear… as long as there are also a lot of people who show their love for me.]

Why She’s About to Pop: Since her childhood years as a YouTube sensation, Charice wowed audiences worldwide with her powerful voice. Channeling Whitney Houston, the petite singer earned the attention of media moguls and legendary producer David Foster. Charice has just celebrated her 18th birthday and with a hit single ‘Pyramid’ featuring Iyaz topping Billboard’s dance charts, she couldn’t be more excited about her success. In an exclusive interview with PopEater, Charice talks about singing for a living as a child and how her life has changed since she’s been discovered. Check it out after the jump.

Five Questions With Charice:

How old were you when you first started singing?

I started singing when I was four years old. The first song I learned was ‘My Heart Will Go On’ by Céline Dion. My mom used to be a singer in a band, so she was my vocal coach for a long time. My dad left us when I was three years old, so when I was seven, I started joining singing contests to help my family. I competed in over 100 singing contests in the Philippines. I did that for a living. When I was 12 years old, I was on the Philippines version of ‘American Idol,’ but unfortunately I lost. I was so depressed. Then, someone posted my performance video on YouTube. Because of that, I got an offer to go to a Korean talent show called ‘Star King.’ I got invited to the Ellen DeGeneres show and Ellen flew me to Los Angeles. Then, I was on Oprah. My mom and I were inside the plane on the way back to the Philippines when Oprah had two policemen take us off the plane. Oprah said, “I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I promise I’m going to make something happen for you!” And right in front of me, she called David Foster and told him, “You gotta work with this kid!”

Which song off the new album speaks to you most?

I usually sing classic ballad songs. This is my first pop and R&B album. These are all my own songs. I love all the songs on this album. ‘Reset’ turned out to be pretty amazing. All the songs are kind of love songs, but what’s amazing about ‘Reset’ is that it can be dedicated to everyone: to lovers, to boyfriends and girlfriends but also to family. I’m very proud of this album.

What’s it like working with David Foster?

He’s been my mentor for a couple of years now. He is very perfectionist, but I’m very comfortable working with him. He’s very funny, but when it comes to work he’s always like, “It has to be great, not good!” We just taped Oprah together and I asked him to be my godfather on the show and he got teary eyed. He is just so nice.

How has your life changed since you’ve been discovered?

My life has really, really changed over the course of the three years because of the people that helped me: Oprah, David Foster, Ellen and especially the fan who posted my video. His name is Dave and we’re friends now. I feel very lucky. I remember I gave Oprah this journal book where drew all my fantasies. On the first page, I was singing with Andrea Bocelli, and she made this dream come true three years ago. On the second page, I was singing with Céline Dion, and she made that dream come true at Madison Square Garden. On the third page, I was with Whitney Houston. I got to meet Whitney at a listening party. On the fourth page, I was with Mariah, and I met her as well. She was really nice. On the last page, there was a picture of Tweety Bird [laughs]. The most special part of all this, last year on Mother’s Day, I gave a key to my mom to her own house and her own car. She was crying, she was so happy. That was the most amazing part of everything.

What kind of music do you listen to and who would like to collaborate with in the future?

I look up to Beyoncé. I love ‘Halo’ — it’s a perfect song, exactly the kind of song I love. I love her style, her singing and her fashion too. I’m trying to get her style but I want to do it my way. She is one of my inspirations right now, aside from Lady Gaga. [Laughs] I want to collaborate with Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber.

“How will I know, Where I’m going now, This broken road, Is trying to tear me down” tell of Charice’s early struggles. “But deep inside I found, A sacred place, That I never knew, Where I feel safe when the road is untrue” …  when a young Charice watches her father threaten her mother, or receive unpleasant remarks from her competitors and their guardians, or fail to win a singing competition because “she didn’t have the right looks”… she had to go to that one thing in her heart that would soothe her, assure her, and comfort her… that “sacred place”… that would tell her to keep going and continue along in spite of all the pitfalls, the ruts and the hazards that tries to stop her from going along her journey on to her dream… and she tells us what this is.

“Here’s what I learned to do” … it’s remarkable that David Foster uses the word “learned” to show that for Charice, her life’s continuing experiences teaches her that there is something to learn from everything that has happened or is happening to her, to “learn” to appreciate the good and “learn” to rise above all the bad.

“Just sing this song, And it takes me right back, Where I belong, And every day there’s a new bridge to cross, But I’m never far from home, If I bring my heart, my soul, my own, In this song”… much like everyone’s favorite comfort blanket, Charice’s has her own sacred place which she turns to whenever she encounters new trials in her life. I would think that “this song” is the sanctuary of a comforting mother and a loving brother, the hopeful reassurance of a dream notebook that tells her that she can always reach for the stars, and much like her first song “Note to God”, the knowledge that she only needs to be true to herself to know that God continues to listen to her heart and tells her to continue on with her dreams… that He would keep her safe no matter the kind of road she takes. Charice is very much aware that things do not come on a silver platter, that no matter how it seems that everything that is happening to her now seems to be gilt with gold, she knows that everything may not be as it seems… that underneath all the glitter can always be another roadblock, a pothole, an unpaved road… but her life experiences has taught her to be prepared for all of these no matter what… because she always has that “sacred place” to come back to.

Oprah’s favorite Charice premieres ‘Pyramid’ video

Since she was discovered by Oprah Winfrey’s producers via YouTube in 2007, pint-sized pop phenomenon Charice has been on the fast track to fame. A favorite of the influential talk-show host – who called her one of the most talented girls in the world – Charice just debuted her music video for ‘Pyramid’ on Oprah.com.

‘Pyramid (feat. Iyaz)’ is the first single from Charice’s self-titled debut album, set to hit stores on May 11th. The song is currently burning up the pop radio charts, with remixes of the song getting spun by DJs across the country.  Grab the track now on iTunes.

Oprah Discovered Star Blows Clizbeats Away!

Craig and Matt Clizbe of Clizbeats were absolutely delighted to have an unexpected visit to their home state of Delaware by Philippine singing sensation Charice!!! Out of all the talented performers they met, she easily ranks near the top. Standing 4 feet ‘11 inches tall, Charice humbly walks in to the studio’s of Delaware pop station WSTW FM where all the local music related press was gathered to hear her. In a room of people 2 and 3 times her age, Charice politely bowed to everyone she met, and quietly let her record sell her up to the room of professionals. Her reputation of being discovered by Oprah producers on Youtube preceding, there was an eagerness to hear what she was to work with. With that said, there was no way to be able to anticipate the kind of magic that was in store. As soon as the play button was pressed, Charice opened her pint-sized mouth, and proceeded to shake the room with what has to be one of biggest new voices in music history!

The guys consider it a true honor to be able to meet Charice. Her talent exceeds that of many in the music industry, and her humble and down to earth spirit is an example for us all. God has truly blessed her.
