Teen Star Charice Takes Italy by Storm — and Meets Her Match

Every time teen singing sensation Charice has performed in Las Vegas, the reaction has been sensational. Record producer David Foster, who has led entertainment for Andre Agassi’s foundation fundraisers and his own concert charity here, has always included Charice in the events and predicted that she’ll achieve stardom.

Talk show hosts Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres have featured Charice on their programs, but as of yet, she has no major breakout hit or record release, although she has been recording tracks for her debut. The songs include “I Will Always Love You” and her first international single “Note to God.”

Charice recently was invited to perform in a singing-only version of an America’s Got Talent-type contest and took Italy by storm! She was promptly hailed as an international superstar and was even invited to sing a duet of “The Prayer” with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

But the real excitement came when she was teamed up with another teen sensation, 13-year-old Cristian Imparato. Now I’m too old in the tooth to really understand all of this, but I was moved, so much so that you have to watch these two remarkable and extraordinary kids appearing on Io Canto (I Sing). The program was broadcast on Italy’s national RAI TV network.

At their young ages, they both showed that they’ve got what it takes for stardom and that their names will become recognized worldwide in the years to come. A friend of mine from Tuscany who knew that I’d met Charice many times here in Las Vegas emailed me, “She simply took Italy by storm. The audiences were chanting for her, and she’s captured the hearts of the entire nation.”

David Archuleta Talks About ‘Christmas From the Heart’

NEW VIDEO ADDED - David Archuleta has been in Nashville since last Friday. In fact, on the day his holiday album, Christmas From the Heart, came out, he was in a Nashville studio, working on material for his next album. Wednesday morning, David and I sat down at the studio where he’s been writing with singer-songwriter Joy Williams and working with several of the town’s producers, including Matt Bronleewe and Mat Kearney producer Robert Marvin. (We did not, however, talk about the possible divorce of his parents, because that story didn’t break until today.)

In the first part of our interview, David talked about his latest project, Christmas From the Heart

How did you like recording with Filipina star Charice Pempengco on Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?

Charice, she’s so talented. I first saw here when she was on YouTube, actually. Then there was another time she was on Oprah, and my parents were, like, ‘Come check this girl out.’ It was neat to see what she was all about and how happy she was doing music and how much she loved to do it. And then how huge her voice was. I was, like, ‘Wow, she’s an amazing singer.’

When they said it would work out to do a duet with her, I was really excited, because she does have such a big voice. Even though the song we do, neither one of us is singing huge or anything. But I kind of like that, because I think people would expect us to be competing. It’s like, ‘No, let’s not do that.’ So we sang a more simple, toned-down song. We tried to complement each other as best we could instead of seeing who could sing better. I’m sure she would outdo me by a mile anyway.

But I didn’t want people to think that we were competing or anything. Because I’m known for being on American Idol and competing, and she’s known for having a huge, amazing voice. It was cool that we both tried to keep the sensitivity of the song. Because she can do anything. She’s such an amazing singer.

One of the best things about Christmas From the Heart is that you sing in four different languages — English, Spanish, French and Latin. Which ones do you know a little bit, and which ones did you have to learn phonetically for the songs?

English and Spanish were the only ones I really knew. Sort of. I’m not even good at English! But it was fun getting to sing in all the different languages. It’s fun to reach out to ] people from different backgrounds and different parts of the world. It’s neat to be able to share and dive into a culture that you’re not familiar with and to get familiar with the language and how the words are said.

It was so cool, getting to sing in French. It’s not like I’m very good at it or anything, but it was neat to make an effort to do it. ‘Cause, you know, there are some French fans, too.

Then Ave Maria, that was cool, getting to sing that. Then, in Spanish, of course, because I’m half-Spanish. I’m over half Hispanic, I guess, because my dad’s a little bit Hispanic.

Do you speak Spanish fluently?

Just a little bit. Both of my parents are fluent, so it’s pretty embarrassing that I’m not. But it’s still a big part of my family. All my mom’s side speaks Spanish. I speak to my grandparents in Spanish. Slowly. And they’re patient with me! But I do speak with them in Spanish and carry on conversations with them.

You had a pronunciation assistant credited on your French song, Pat-A-Pan. Was she in the studio with you?

No. We were just like, ‘These are French lyrics. I don’t speak them, and I don’t think I’m saying them right.’ My keyboardist’s friend spoke French, so the night before, we just called her and said, ‘Hey! Can you help me with these words?’ She just went over them on the phone with me, and I was, like, ‘Thank you, because I’m going to have to record them in the morning.’

It was pretty funny. It was someone I had known already, but I guess they were my coach for the day.

You used several Utah-based composers and arrangers. You and Richard Parkinson, for instance, go back before American Idol.

He used to accompany me sometimes.

Talk about some of the Utah guys you used on the album.

There’s a lot of really talented people in Utah, people who would really make an effort to make the music the best that it could be and as emotional as it could be. What we wanted to do with the music, instead of people who would just be like, ‘We’ll throw together something for you really fast and get our money.’ You know?

There were a lot of people in Utah who were passionate about the project and wanted to make sure the music told the story the best it could and had as much emotion. That was really neat to see, and to be able to work with some of the most talented people in Utah. Kurt Bestor has worked on a lot of things, not just in Utah. So it was fun getting to work with him, too.

I know you knew Richard, but did you know people like Kurt and Sam Caedon before this album?

No, I just met Sam on this project. Kurt Bestor, I had worked with on a bonus track on the album last year. That’s when I first met him. It was a pretty quick thing, like the last thing I did for the last project. It was all pretty sudden and last-minute, so I was happy to be able to work with him and have some time this time around to let him do his magic.

There are a lot of strings on the tracks he arranged, because you used the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Will you take a string section out on your upcoming christmas tour?

It’s hard, with money and stuff, because it can get pretty expensive when you add more and more to it. It can affect other things on the tour, even just normal things. You have to be careful with the budget. But I think there are some dates where there will be an orchestra or strings, just to add to the performance.

I really feel like real instruments and the live feeling add so much to the music, and to those arrangements, especially. It gives something extra to the people who come out to the shows. While it won’t be the whole tour, I think at least sometimes there will be some live strings there for the performances.

Christmas From the Heart seems to be broken into three sections. You have your traditional hymns — Joy to the World, The First Noel. You have a couple of pop standards — Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, I’ll Be Home for Christmas. Then you have a string of traditional minir-key, European carols — Pat-A-Pan, What Child Is This, Riu Riu Chiu. Were they all songs you already knew?

Most of them I did. The European ones were new to me, but those are some of my favorite ones on the album. Because they’re different. Because they really stand out and catch your attention, and they were really fun to record.

I was struggling, because I was having to record while I was on tour. It’s hard, because you’re in a different mindset when you’re on tour than you are when you’re in the studio. I was using so much energy on tour, so it was definitely a big challenge. But I did my best with it. As long as the emotion in the songs is portrayed to people that’s what matters the most.

I really like the European carols, and I like that captivating sound that they have that isn’t usually in Christmas songs. Those are some of my favorite ones on the album.

I’m a big Christmas music buff, and it’s always nice to hear somebody record a song like Pat-A-Pan that you don’t hear but every 40 or 50 albums.

We were trying to give it a more contemporary feel, a more modernized thing. It’s hard, because it’s a pretty short song. They actually had to add to the song and make it an original arrangement of the song. I really like how it came out. Kurt did a great job with it.

Why did you pick Riu Riu Chiu?

Well, Riu Riu Chiu is in Spanish. I’m not going to do, like, Mi Burrito Sabanero, you know, or any of those kinds of songs, but I wanted to do something in Spanish. I wanted to do songs that people weren’t really familiar with and weren’t used to hearing. Riu Riu Chiu was in Spanish, so it was a way to give to the Latin side of me and the Latin audience. It was mainly to have a Spanish flair added to the album and to have something unique to add to the album, like Pat-A-Pan was.

We listened to a bunch of different versions and arrangements, just to see what people did to make them interesting. There were some that were really interesting, or really simple, like little kids singing them, or a guy on a guitar. It was like, ‘Okay, let’s see how I can make it my own version.’

Charice Keeps Mum on American Suitor

MANILA – International singing sensation Charice is keeping mum on her love life. The 17-year-old singer, who is now sporting a new sexy look, shyly admitted that she has an American suitor when prodded by “The Buzz” host Kris Aquino about her love life. She shared: “Kapag minsan tinutukso ako ni mommy, ‘Yan ang gwapo, gwapo. “Sabi ko, ‘Ayoko naman na ako ang bubuhay sa kanya.” Charice admitted once that she has a crush on American singer Josh Groban.

Meanwhile, the Filipino singer is set to go back to the United States on Thursday for a series of shows there. She will promote an all-star Christmas album, be part of “David Foster and Friends” tour, attend the premiere of “Alvin and the Chipmunks” film, and finish her first international album.
Her album produced by Foster will be released January of next year.

Recapturing That Special Moment With Charice

Each of us has a few of those special videos of Charice that we watch over and over again, when we are down or in need of inspiration. We try to recapture that special moment when we first discovered her, and all the profound and deep emotions it stirred in us. It’s like falling in love again.

Her duet with Celine Dion does this for me, and is special because it captures the different stages of amazement people go through as Charice reveals herself to them. The many versions available on the net also allow one to experience the event through the various eyes and ears of the collective audience, from many angles.

Her introduction by Celine provides some context for the evening’s performance, but does not prepare the audience for the momentous event that is about to follow. Those who don’t know Charice think this is some kind of charity event, for Celine to give a kid a chance to sing with her, and aawwwww – how sweet for Charice to dedicate this song to her Mommy. They applaud to cheer this child on, lest her delicate feelings be hurt. They are totally unprepared for what will happen next.

The video below is used as a reference in this article; although the video quality is not the best, it does capture the audience reactions in detail.

As Celine starts the song and gives Charice the stage, they expect a tiny voice to emanate from her, consistent and their initial impressions of her. They are astounded to hear this solid, mellow voice with the same power as Celine’s, coming from her. It takes them a few seconds to get over this initial disbelief, then to burst into applause, immediately resetting their initial image of her, and their expectations for the rest of the song. But they ain’t seen nuthin’ yet …

At 0:28-0:30, she renders a short passage in a delicately sweet angelic tone, and you can hear the “whews”, “wows” and spontaneous claps from the crowd, obviously touched by its sheer beauty. As the song progresses and builds momentum, Charice mesmerizes them with the effortless power and quality of her voice, as well as her perfect diction. The audience reacts spontaneously, as Charice reveals the different facets of her vocal talent.

They cannot come to grips with this level of talent coming from such a young girl, and by this point in the song, the nature of the applause changes. What was previously mostly an obligatory applause during her introduction (the loud excited applause at the beginning mostly came from the Charice fans), has transformed into cheering at a very personal level. Some of the reactions you hear though, are just raw expressions of awe, wonder and amazement, not really intended for the singer to hear.

At 0:50, the first logical part of the song ends, and Celine joins back in. It is obvious by now that this young girl holds her own against Celine, and seeing the two singing together establishes in their minds that this young girl has arrived. Another major wild round of applause. But Charice is just warming up, and they ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

At 1:22, she walks with Celine to the edge of the stage. The crowd recognizes the symbolism of her walking with the Diva, and that itself generates another major round of applause.

This is a gentle ballad she is singing, and so far, she already has everyone in the palm of her hands. Sweetly smiling, looking very relaxed and in her element, she is killing them softly with this song – until 1:52, when she gives them a sample of her higher vocal register, and just slays them right there. The audience erupts again in applause with arms raised, as if in victory.

However, the piece de resistance for me is at 2:27, when Celine says (what sounds like) “Go girl!”, and Charice renders the prolonged “whoa-whoa” portion of the song (pardon my very technical description). The sight of a young girl in the spotlight at the edge of the stage, in a semi-oblation posture with head tilted upwards and eyes closed, singing her heart out to the heavens and filling the arena with the sublime beauty of her soul-stirring voice, moves the entire audience into a rolling thunderous applause punctuated with primal screams and wolf-whistles. People instinctively clap their hands above their heads as they witness this young soul giving her all for this, her moment in time, and cheer her on as their own personal champion.

If you frame that last scene against the backdrop of her life story and her quest to better their lives, it will gain newfound meaning for you. Imagine her singing for her supper as she bares her soul and renders that haunting passage with her almost-pleading voice, and that image might just get seared into your mind and move you to tears.

At song’s end, the audience is going wild, not knowing exactly what hit them – one of the first coherent words you hear is “More!”. Charice is likewise in tears, touched and humbled by the significance of the moment, having lived her dream of a lifetime.

Through the miracle of the internet and video sharing, we can live vicariously through the audience to relive the different stages of amazement we experienced when we first discovered Charice, and those profound feelings that were awakened in us. We all take away something personally unique from this first encounter, and whatever course she takes as she charts her own destiny, we will hang on to those special gems that are the essence of that special moment with her.

To borrow a line from that classic movie Casablanca, “We’ll always have Madison”.

Charice Pempengco Reveals Christmas Duet with David Archuleta

A Twitter account said to be owned by international Filipino singer Charice Pempengco revealed that she had finished recording a duet with “American Idol” 2008 runner-up David Archuleta for his forthcoming Christmas album.

The update was uploaded early July 29. The name of the Twitter account is “Officialcharice.”

And despite fans ‘twitting’ for the young singer to disclose more details about the duet, Charice–yet again on Twitter– could only say that “ it’s a duet” and that fans should “wait for it.”

Charice also relayed a “thank you” to David Archuleta, saying that “[the recording] was such a pleasure to do.”

As of this writing, there was no message on David Archuleta’s Twitter account regarding the duet.

Meanwhile, Charice was among the personalities who modeled for the “Face 2 Face” photo exhibit held recently by young and enterprising beauty consultant Jake Galvez at the Fiamma Bar and Resto, Makati City. Other celebrities featured in the exhibit are Alessandra da Rossi, Bianca Gonzalez, Sid Lucero, Angel Locsin and Brent Chua.

Charice will be part of the forthcoming “Wowowee” US tour. She will also sing in the “David Foster and Friends” concert this October.

Last Aug. 24 at the press conference for her “Your Songs” concert, Lea Salonga lavishly heaped praise on Charice, naming her one of three best local singers alongside Nikki Gil and Regine Velasquez.

“She possesses a very fantastic talent,” Lea lauded.

Very interesting tweets coming from Charice — A couple of hours after midnight (July 29 California time), Charice tweeted that she finished recording for David Archuleta’s Christmas album.

In spite of the rise of interest by both Charice and David Archuleta’s fans/followers who tweeted for further details regarding the song, Charice just said that it’s a duet but did not disclose anything more about the song.

Charice further tweeted to David Archuleta a thank you and that it’s such a pleasure to do the recording.

David Archuleta Christmas Album

It may only be the second week of June but the promise of a Merry Christmas is already here.

Ever since David Archuleta recorded his demo of “O Holy Night” back in December 2003, fans have been eagerly anticipating the release of his first Christmas album.

Fan Scene was allowed a sneak “peek” into Santa’s workshop to see what might lie in store for all the good little boys and girls this holiday season.

While most of the presents are still under wraps, Santa told us that “O Holy Night” and “Silent Night” will both be making the CD!

Charice Touched My Life

This article is by none other than JP, known to many Chasters as Lolo JP. He is opening his soul to us because JP wants us to know how and why Charice changed his life and his spirit. JP was inspired to write this article by Henri_v and Gandalf.

As I look at the world around us, and bear witness to the unbelievably spontaneous chain of chaotic events that unfold, it simply leaves me to think and conclude that this place we call our home, is an uncaring place. And as we are all aware that we live our lives under different circumstances in this uncaring place, we are left wondering “what to do” when faced with problems and challenges.

Using this mind-painted backdrop as a theme, let me share with you the reasons that brought me into this wholesome community, CHARICEMANIA, in search of an adorable and modest child simply called by the name, Charice. While many of you, younger, keen and adoring fans were magnetically drawn by her musical prowess and grace, my reason for being here lies deep in my spiritual domain.

I chanced upon this cute, petite child with a big voice, Charice, on the Oprah show. As I intently watched her sing “I Have Nothing,” what struck me was her voice’s unique tonal quality and masterful delivery…it was so soothingly emotional and uplifting that her voice will hold you motionless and bring you to a higher plane to where she is in that moment. Her picture of confidence is undeniable and her innocent looks–never deceiving. She is an old soul in a young body.

Charice is a picture of a persistent young girl who is focused and had an eye on the main chance. Looking up to her idols for inspiration, she was determined to bring out her best on every given opportunity to start her dream of becoming a singer. She started to chase her dream at a very young age but things just didn’t come easy. Still unknown at that initial stage of her career, she already had to face countless detractors. She remains vulnerable to these hateful people as she steadily progresses in her career.

Spiteful language is not hurtful because it is forbidden…but, is hurtful when the hostile impulse of deep-seated meanness of others utter their malicious insinuations to another. While there is so much bad and so much good in the worst and best of us, it doesn’t behoove any of us to speak evil about the rest of us.

At an early age, Charice was bruised with words and was made to feel small that she could not achieve anything in her quest to win in singing contests. It reached to a point that is balefully hard for her to take but she took everything in stride and did the noblest thing that her conscience could ever dictate to her…”forgive and do nothing at all.”

Charice possesses strong cognitive skills that enable her to understand and prioritize the things around her. She feels assured on the premise that if she knew all, she can forgive all.

She never cherished the thoughts of resentment and it appears that she has put all the bitterness, anger, and malice of her detractors away from her mind and has been tenderhearted and forgiving. It is evident that she was aware of the looming things in her path and the only manifestation that she shows of anger is by shedding tears. Words have the power to both destroy and heal but she remained gentle, quiet and had only kind and truthful words for her detractors to reflect their imperfections. She is compassionate and a true believer. She wants to know that people care and understand because to know that no one cares is the greatest burden that any individual can carry. She is gifted with a beautiful voice, is resolute and has a self-fulfilling attitude that will help her overcome obstacles along her path. She lives as she believes–proud and an achiever. She is what she is…Charice, her self-creation.

Personally speaking, Charice is that passionate and endearing child on the Oprah show who sung “heralding the triumph of Faith!” And that struck me hard and was a turning point in my life. At that time of my slow physical recovery, it was something that my weak body and fragile mind needed…food for my soul. I wrote this as an initial frame of reference to what I’ve seen and have perceived about Charice, and to better understand my circumstance of why I wrote what I’ve just written. I’m a survivor of 3 near-death major colon operations in 1977 and another surgery for the same in June 2001, a survivor of a near-fatal wintertime car accident in Reno in 1988 and now an older man of 63 who survived a heart attack in February 2008. I remain thankful and mystified with the gift of life.

As I have a nil chance of meeting her and to thank her in person, please allow me to honor her by sharing these personal experiences, my thoughts and a renewed affirmation of my spiritual faith. As I watch and hear her sing, she lifts me up and brings me within an arm’s-length in heaven. Truly, she touched and made a difference in my life. As she continues to provide food for my soul, she lives in my heart. May God bless and keep her.

All these experiences, I can convey to you, but, to understand it for you, I can’t.

Whitney Houston is Rumored To Be The Surprise Guest at David Foster & Friends’ Concert

David Foster and Charice Pempengco – Whitney was last seen here at a Planet Hollywood-sponsored boxing championship fight, which also brought out Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone. That started rumors that after battling demons and ex-husband Bobby Brown, she was getting ready for a comeback. Now we’re hearing that first album will be released this summer and writer-producers Stargate have contributed the single “Calling You Tonight” to be released in advance.

But Clive himself confirmed that David, who has produced everybody from Josh Groban to Barbra Streisand and Andre Bocelli, will start working with Whitney this week. One of the stars booked for David’s May 9 “Friends” concert along with Earth, Wind & Fire’s Phillip Bailey, Brian McKnight and Peter Cincotti is Oprah Winfrey’s protégé Charice Pempengco. At last year’s Mandalay concert aired on PBS, teen Charice wowed and dazzled the sold-out crowd with her version of Whitney’s hit “I Will Always Love You.” If I remember correctly, David even intermixed Whitney’s Bodyguard soundtrack video to match Charice’s version.

Now just think of the thunderous reaction and emotional highlight if they did it live together! I leave you with the rumors because we’ll never know who his surprise guests will be until the very last moment!

Charice’s New Wish — A Duet with Justin Timberlake

After her successful duet with international star Celine Dion, young Filipino singer Charice is hoping she can also perform onstage with Justin Timberlake, former lead singer of boy band ’N Sync.

In an exclusive interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Charice admitted that she dreams of having a duet with other international stars.

“Siyempre po kung ako ang masusunod sa babae gusto ko ay si Mariah Carey. Kapag po lalaki ang gusto ko pong maka-duet ay si Justin Timberlake,” she said.

TRANSLATION: Of course,if it is up to me, from among the female(singers) i want (to do a duet with) Mariah Carey. From among the male(singers) i want to do a duet with Justin Timberlake.

Charice added: “Kasi po ang galing niyang mag-perform. Hanga po ako sa kanya. Ang galing po niyang kumanta at sumayaw din.”

TRANSLATION: Because he(Timberlake) performs very good. I admire him. He is very good in singing and dancing also.

In a previous interview, Charice shared her wish to sing the hit song “When You Believe” with either Carey or Whitney Houston.

Charice, who was discovered through the popular video-sharing Web site, YouTube, made headlines when she performed alongside international music giants like Josh Groban in Las Vegas, Andrea Bocelli in Italy and Dion in New York.

The young diva also disclosed to abs-cbnNEWS.com that she will have a chance to meet “Hannah Montana” star Miley Cyrus when she attends Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York on the last week of November.

She said she is excited to be introduced to the young American actress-singer, whom she described as one of her inspirations.

“Gusto kong makita si Miley Cyrus kasi hinahangaan siya ng mga kabataan sa States,” Charice said.

TRANSLATION: I want to see Miley Cyrus because she is admired by the youth in the US.

Aside from Cyrus, Charice will also be introduced to American Idol runner- up David Archuleta, whom she admires.

“Siyempre nagagalingan ako sa pagkanta niya. Humahanga din ako sa kanya kasi galing siya sa American Idol,” she said.

TRANSLATION: Of course I think he(David Archuleta) is very good in singing. I also admire him because he comes from American Idol.

Charice flew back to the country for a short break. She will be in the US on November 15th to promote David Foster’s newest album.

Charice’s track is included in Foster’s album, “Hitman: David Foster & Friends,” along with music icons Kenny G., Michael Buble, Josh Groban, Brian McKnight, Katharine McPhee, Andrea Bocelli and Dion.

On November 19, Charice is set to appear on America’s popular morning show “Good Morning America.”
