Like a Pyramid, Charice is Rising to the Top

Charice was recently interviewed by MyYearbook.com. The pop sensation dishes on her new album, Oprah and Iyaz.

May 25, 2010 — “…And every step we took we’ve grown/ Look how fast the time has flown/ A journey to a place unknown/ We’re going down in history…” The lyrics to pint-sized pop phenomenon Charice’s #1 dance song, “Pyramid,” couldn’t fit her own rise to fame story more perfectly.

Born to sing, Charice entered countless singing competitions mimicking her idols until it finally landed her a spot on Oprah. When the queen of daytime TV got a hold of her pipes, the music ‘biz knew they had to act fast because this Charice was going to go far. Next thing she knew, Charice was working with proclaimed producer David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) and recording her self-titled debut album (out now, buy here). Below, myMag caught up with Charice to talk about her recent birthday bash, performing with Iyaz and her secret guilty pleasure.

Q: You recently turned 18 – happy birthday! How did you celebrate?
Charice: I celebrated it in New York with my friends. We had a party in my hotel room and my fans joined online.

Q: When did you first discover your love of music, and when did you realize you wanted to make it your life?
Charice: At the age of four my mother discovered me singing on the kitchen table. I’ve wanted to sing ever since then, I haven’t stopped from that moment on.

Q: Who were some of the musicians you grew up admiring, and what did you take from watching them that you’ve incorporated into your own music and stage performances?
Charice: I grew up listening to the big three: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey! I’m famous for singing their songs. I entered 100 singing competitions singing their songs.

Q: You recently released your debut album, Charice. How does it feel to have accomplished that?
Charice: Amazing! I now have my own songs, which is awesome.

Q: You’ve worked very closely with 15-time Grammy award-winning songwriter and producer David Foster on your album. What kind of mentor has he been to you?
Charice: He’s become my mentor and godfather. What a blessing to have worked and gotten to know David Foster!

Q: What advice has he given you as a rising star?
Charice: Keep your feet on the ground.

Q: Oprah Winfrey has played a big part in your success; you have appeared on her show four times! What have those experiences meant to you?
Charice: I call her my fairy godmother! I owe her so much!

Q: What was it like to work with Iyaz on your hit single “Pyramid”?
Charice: He’s an amazing human being and artist. We get on great and laugh all the time. Hey, Iyaz!

Q: How do you feel that you can relate to that song?
Charice: I can relate to growing strong from the bottom up. Having a strong belief in yourself – nothing can knock you down.

Q: How did you react when you heard it hit # 1 on the Billboard Dance Charts?
Charice: It was amazing! I have been promoting that song in dance clubs, so it was nice to see it succeed.

Q: What do you hope people get out of your music?
Charice: Happiness and joy.

Q: What’s something that most people would be surprised to hear about you?
Charice: I’m a horror movie fanatic!..

Charice Keeps Mum on American Suitor

MANILA – International singing sensation Charice is keeping mum on her love life. The 17-year-old singer, who is now sporting a new sexy look, shyly admitted that she has an American suitor when prodded by “The Buzz” host Kris Aquino about her love life. She shared: “Kapag minsan tinutukso ako ni mommy, ‘Yan ang gwapo, gwapo. “Sabi ko, ‘Ayoko naman na ako ang bubuhay sa kanya.” Charice admitted once that she has a crush on American singer Josh Groban.

Meanwhile, the Filipino singer is set to go back to the United States on Thursday for a series of shows there. She will promote an all-star Christmas album, be part of “David Foster and Friends” tour, attend the premiere of “Alvin and the Chipmunks” film, and finish her first international album.
Her album produced by Foster will be released January of next year.

Charice in America, and Beyond

I want to discuss Charice’s journey as she continues her march toward international stardom. We know she is in the United States to promote her forthcoming album. Charice’s American management has stated the goal of moving our princess’s career upward begins with the release of her new album. As the launch time moves near, I expect that another new song or two will be released prior to the album’s release. Her first single released in MP3 format was “Note to God” amid a spectacular debut on the Oprah Winfrey show. The song catapulted all the way to # 44 the first week it was available.

However, NTG did not sustain sales in the top 100 for very long. Then Charice’s segment on Oprah is re-played and the song jumped back into the charts for a while, then it disappeared again. That points to a characteristic of the American music industry that Charice must anticipate and attack. American music fans have so many artists and so much music available in so many formats that they do not focus on an artist or a song for very long unless there is something either very attractive or very unique to maintain their interest. To complicate matters, let’s segment the market into age groups: under age 30, age 30 to 50, and age 50 and older. The under 30 group is the most fickle, in my opinion. The age 30 to 50 groups’ musical tastes begin to expand as they get older.

I, myself, began to appreciate different genres as I aged. At 20, I absolutely could not listen to much of any kind of music except rock and roll. I grew up with Chuck Berry, The Beatles and Elvis Presley. Then the Beach Boys captured my musical ear in a big way, and I still enjoy their music. Now my musical tastes range from soft pop, to some country, and some more classical numbers such as Sarah Brightman and Andre Bocelli perform. Without belaboring the point, the majority of Charice’s fans are in the 30 to 50 age group, and the over 50 age group.

So what types of music will David Foster produce for Charice? I think I can safely say that he will not abandon Charice’s older fans. However, he will surely have some songs for the younger crowd. Foster cannot ignore the tremendous buying power and influence of teens and twenty somethings. I think I begin to understand why he and Charice are moving slowly. So much is riding on the success of her first American album.

Charice’s North American tour will be a whirlwind of appearances promoting the album. We already know she will appear in ten “David Foster and Friends” concerts . Look for appearances at Pro football games singing the United States National Anthem, appearing on late night talk shows, charity events, early morning shows, fairs, and any other exposure Foster and Charice’s American manager Marc Johnston can secure for Charice.

Will the album be a huge hit? This is what Charice’s American management wants very much. I forecast that the album will be just that, a BIG hit! With the top management team in America, and America’s most influential woman, Oprah, backing her; I believe the album will be successful. Then it becomes so much easier for Charice to further her career and gain acclaim as a truly international star. Charice’s team will be free to pick and choose which venues and appearances will be chosen because there will be more offers than she can accept.

Now given the current economic trends and overall unpredictability of the entertainment industry, in my opinion, fan websites, fans, Charice and Charice’s management should have a contingency plan in case something goes wrong. Here are some possibilities.

Continue on the present course in America. Complete the tour and all of the other promotions. Analyze and determine where Charice’s album did the best. The data will be available. Produce another album or single and target her most popular market segment.

Try acting? Would Hollywood be interested? With only one scene in an animated movie on her resume, this career path may not be the best choice. However, after Alvin and the Chipmunks – The Sequel, premiers, Charice may gain many new fans. After all, she will be displaying her amazing singing talent. Singing is Charice’s forte.

Return to the Philippines and grow her career there? She has had great success with her concert, albums and appearances. Sooner or later, regardless of her overseas success, Charice will have to decide if she is most comfortable in the Philippines or elsewhere. Would she be content to remain a national celebrity, and forego attempting an international career? She still has an uphill battle in the Philippines because a segment of “detractors” have other idols and vehemently attack at any opportunity.

Does Charice have a career in Europe? She won many fans in the Netherlands with her appearance at Feyenoord stadium. Remember her songs produced by a music publishing company in Sweden? Of course, she wowed the Italians in her Ti lascio una canzone variety show appearances. Fan sites were started in both Sweden and Italy.

What about China, Korea and other countries? The Chinese version of internet behemoth YouTube, YouKu, has many Charice videos listed. China would be a challenging environment for contractual negotiations, but the rewards could be tremendous.

So, what can we, her fans, do to help Charice regardless of whether her first American album is a success? We do it by planning NOW. Let’s not wait and hope. I am of the opinion that being proactive, anticipating problems, and developing alternate promotion plans is the best course for Charice’s management to pursue. What do you think Charice and her management should plan?”

Charice to Start Work on US debut Album in January

Supporters following the career of young Filipino international singing star Charice Pempengco have something to look forward to next year.

“Sa January po magsa-start na po akong mag-recording para sa debut album ko po sa States under Warner Brothers and produced by Mr. David Foster po,” Charice said during a dzMM interview Wednesday morning with Korina Sanchez on the program Tambalang Failon and Sanchez.

English Translation: “In January, I will start recording my debut album under Warner Brothers label and produced by Mr. David Foster.” Charice said during a dzMM interview Wednesday morning with Korina Sanchez on the program Tambalang Failon and Sanchez.

Charice will be spending Christmas with her family at her own condominium in Parañaque City.

The 16-year-old girl, who hails from Laguna province, recalled three of her most memorable career experiences.

“Nabigyan ng pagkakataon sa isang episode sa Oprah, tapos po nun naka-duet ko si Celine Dion. Tapos po yung nag-duet po kami ni Andrea Bocceli,” Charice said.

English Translation: “I was given the chance to appear on one of the Oprah episode, and after that appearance, I was able to sing a duet with Celine Dion. After that, a duet with Andrea Bocceli also happened.

Charice also expressed her gratitude to popular US talk show host Ellen de Generes who discovered her singing prowess through video-sharing website Youtube.

“Paborito ko naman din po yun. Doon po ako nag-umpisa. Yung performance ko po sa Korea ang nakita ng grupo ni Ellen de Generes po,” said Charice.

English Translation: “ That was also my favorite appearance ( referring to Ellen Degeneres appearance last December 2007) because that show gave me my first chance to be recognized. My performance in Korea is where the staff of Ellen Degeneres saw me performed, “ said Charice.

Charice has had her share of ups and downs in life before being able to be where she is now.

Her hard work and perseverance paid off and this has enabled her to fulfill some of her dreams.

“Matagal ko na pong gustong magkaroon ng sariling sasakyan. Nakabili na po kami ng sasakyan namin. Saka magkaroon ng sariling bahay,” she said.

English Translation: “ I have been dreaming of owning a vehicle. We were able to buy our own transportation and we finally have our own house,” she said.

She told Sanchez that her family will soon purchase a seven-door apartment in her province.

“Bale yung isa, sa amin. Yung iba, papaupahan, at yung isa pa, para sa lola ko po. Sa Laguna [yung apartment] kasi syempre doon po ako nanggaling,’ she explained.

English Translation: “One of the unit (referring to seven-door apartment) will be for my family. Another unit will be for my grandmother. The rest of the units will be rented. The apartment is located in Laguna because that’s where I came from.”

“Nabibili ko po mga gusto namin para sa family ko lalo na sa kapatid ko. Syempre yung mga gustong-gusto niyang bilin nabibili ko na po sa kanya. Nakukumpleto na po namin mga gamit namin,” she added when asked what have been her blessings for the year.

English Translation: “ I was able to buy everything I wanted for my family especially for my brother. Of course, all the things he wanted , I was able to buy for him. We able to complete the furnishing of our home,” she added when asked what have been her blessing for the year.

With all the success still pouring in for her, Charice still manages to spend even the holidays in the Philippines.

“Ayaw ko pong makalimutan ako ng mga tao dito sa Pilipinas,” she said.

English Translation: “ I don’t want to forget where I came from especially the people from the Philippines,” she said.

Charlie Green’s impressive debut album

MANILA, Philippines—Talent searches and singing competitions on the boob tube don’t always get their winners right, but nobody doubts their ability to jumpstart lucrative performing careers for their truly talented participants.

Outstanding singers like Jennifer Hudson (“American Idol”), Charice Pempengco (“Little Big Star”) and Madonna Decena (“Britain’s Got Talent”) started their performing careers via the talent-search route, but they were prematurely knocked out of their respective competitions. Fortunately, people clamored to see more of their unique gifts long after they were shown the door. (Interestingly, we remember acting with the petite but vocally impressive Madonna in Musical Theater Philippines’ “Sino Ka Ba, Jose Rizal?” in the late ’90s.)

Beyond reproach

A refreshing addition to the list is “Britain’s Got Talent” semifinalist, Charlie Green, the 11-year-old Filipino-British singing wunderkind who recently paid his mother’s native country a visit—and left it with his self-titled debut album, “Charlie Green,” an 11-track collection that doesn’t disappoint.

Like Michael Bublé, Green’s skills in vocal improvisation and note-perfect singing are beyond reproach: In Bart Howard’s “Fly Me to the Moon,” he shows off his jazzy flair in big-band fashion, and gives the tune a floating, swaying rendering.

The poignant optimism of Louie Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” gets a more hopeful boost and beckoning from the prepubescent singer’s endearing British lilt, his clipped, crisp words and slurred r’s adding a sense of child-like urgency to its timeless message.

High notes

But, more than his easygoing style and natural aptitude for performing, it’s Charlie’s bell-like voice that truly sets him apart from the rest of the talented pack. Its clarity and tonal quality remind us of Lea Salonga’s in her “I Am But A Small Voice” heyday. Take Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons’ “All of Me” or Johnny Mercer’s “Summer Wind.” There’s nothing better than hearing Green hit and sustain these songs’ high notes in all their crowd-pleasing glory.

The boy’s impressive breathing technique is evident in both ballads (“Hands Around the World”) and upbeat numbers, and especially notable in his rollicking covers of the Yuletide ditties, Johnny Marks’ “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie’s “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” Add to that the fact that he transposes portions of his repertoire with adjusted, scat-heavy, jazzed-up notes that nevertheless stay in synch with their melodic patterns—very Bublé, indeed!

OPM fans will get a kick out of his lovingly rendered version of Mike Velarde Jr. and Dominador Santiago’s “Dahil Sa ’Yo,” in which he demonstrates the lush beauty and inherent poetry of the Filipino language.

The album reaches its cohesive peak in three tracks: Green gives Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” a youthful musical glow. Cedric Whitehouse’s “In My World” is as beautifully arranged as it is hauntingly sung.

And, in the album’s most fun-infused number, “Mama Said So,” the young performer gets to sing his age in Richard Poon’s inspired pop-jazz composition—a tune that vividly captures Charlie Green’s playful, adolescent energy and impeccable sense of rhythm.

Popular balladeer

We asked the popular balladeer how he came up with the song. Did he write it specifically for Charlie? Richard replied: “Star Records asked me to write something for him. I wanted the song to sound like a standard, using a theme that suits his age. It shows how his young mind contrasts to that of his folks’.”

A word to Charlie’s handlers, though: Please keep those records coming—before the voice-altering effects of adolescent hormones kick in!

Teen singing sensation Charice has launched her self-titled debut album on ABS-CBN’s weekly variety show “ASAP 08″ on Sunday.

“Masayang masaya po ako kasi po na-launch na po iyong album ko at ire-release na po siya,” Charice told abs-cbnNEWS.com

“Special itong album ako kasi first album ko. Solo ko ito, pinaghandaan ko po ito. Lahat ng mga songs covers po siya pero iniba namin iyong version para hindi magsawa ang tao.”

The singer said her first single “It Can Only Get Better” is a song dedicated for the youth. The song tells teens to hold on to their dreams and believe that there’s always hope.

Charice’s CD features six songs, including the hits he sang on her TV guestings on the Ellen deGeneres Show, Paul O’Grady Show and Oprah. She said two of the songs were composed by producers from Sweden .

Charice’s album is produced and distributed by ABS-CBN’s music outfit Star Records.

Oprah guesting

Charice said she is eagerly awaiting the local airing of the “World’s Smartest Kids” episode of Oprah where she performed the Whitney Houston ballad “I Have Nothing.”

“Sa May 12 po, siyempre excited po ako kasi gusto ko ng mapanood iyong sarili, she said. She said she has yet to receive confirmation that host Oprah Winfrey is inviting her to come back on the show for another guesting.

Charice says she may miss the local airing of the World’s Smartest Kids episode since she will be flying to Hawaii as a guest on a special episode of ABS-CBN popular noontime show “Wowowee.”

Child singer releases debut album

INTERNATIONAL singing icon Charice Pempengco has announced the release of her self-titled debut album “Charice” under Star Records this week.

ABS-CBN reports said the child singer made the announcement during her appearance before “Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (Sipa)” Benefit Dinner in Los Angeles, California last week.

Charice asked for the support of Filipinos abroad for her first album.

She said she was excited and glad that she finally completed her recording before she left on April 24, for her visit to the US.

Some songs included in her album are “I Have Nothing” and “And I’m Telling You” by Whitney Houston, and two original songs entitled “Born to Love You Forever” and “It Can Only Get Better”.

She also told kababayans in the states that she is proud to be invited to sing in front of her fellow Filipinos and some Americans.

She as well extended her gratitude to her mother station ABS-CBN for giving her opportunity to visit the places that she never imagined she would reach.

Charice said she is proud to be a Filipino and grateful to be part of the ABS-CBN Team Kapamilya.

The upcoming guesting of Charice at an international TV show is set to be aired on May 12.

Last year, she made an astounding appearance in Ellen DeGeneres show, which is also a well-known talk show in the world.

Charice comes out with first album

International singing sensation Charice announced that her most-awaited first album under Star Records will be released this week.

“Ire-release na po next week ‘yung first debut album ko po, ang tagal kong hinintay. Sana po ay suportahan niyo po ako at sana po ay suportahan natin ang kapwa Pilipino natin,” Charice gladly told members of “Search to Involve Pilipino Americans” (SIPA) in Los Angeles, California late Friday night, April 26.

For the event, Charice sang Whitney Houston’s hit “I Have Nothing,” which is also included in her self-titled debut album.

She also performed her version of The Filipino Channel’s (TFC) theme song “Lipad ng Pangarap” in front of Pinoys and Americans.

“Sobrang proud po ako at naimbitahan niyo ako…narating ko po ang mga lugar na hindi ko narating, mga American TV shows, ang lahat ng ito ay dahil sa suporta ng TFC, ABS-CBN…,” Charice added.

Charice also said that she is proud being a Filipino and proud to be part of ABS-CBN’s Team Kapamilya.

“Sobrang proud po ako na naging Pilipino ako at sobrang proud na Kapamilya ako, ako ay proud Kapamilya at solid Kapamilya,”

Charice just finished recording her album before she left the Philippines Thursday, April 24 to appear on SIPA’s Benefit Dinner.

The young singer’s album will include two original songs titled “Born to Love You Forever” and “It Can Only Get Better” composed especially for her by Swedish song artists.

The album will also include a revival of Whitney Houston’s “And I’m Telling You,” which paved the way for the child singer’s international recognition through the YouTube.com.

After her successful appearance in Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show “Ellen” last year, Charice will once again charm audiences in the US and the rest of the world with her upcoming performance in the highest-rating television talk show, “Oprah”.

abs-cbnNEWS.com learned that her guesting on Oprah will be aired this coming May 12.

Last April 8, Charice also appeared in London’s popular program “Paul O’Grady Show.

Just as she did in the Ellen DeGeneres show in December 2007, Charice also delighted audiences in Britain with her performance on the said TV talk show.

A report said that after her debut album, ABS-CBN’s Star Records is cooking up a new singing adventure for the child singer.
