From YouTube to “Oprah” to an appearance last week on “Regis and Kelly,” the 18-year-old Filipino artist known as Charice lands in Wisconsin this Saturday for the 95.9 KISS FM/Chickenfest concert in Darboy.

The young phenomenon belts an elegant yet powerful voice from her petite 5-foot-1 frame, which has drawn professional comparisons to greats like Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. Though Charice said her mother originally discovered her talent at age 4, foreign “American Idol”-esque singing competitions “Little Big Star” and “Star King” gave her her first major publicity before her YouTube videos began flourishing in cyberspace as a teenager. According to Charice, “Little Big Star” and “Star King” were just two of literally 100 singing competitions she’s participated in.

Hard to believe Charice didn’t receive a single professional vocal lesson until last year; her mother, a former vocalist in a band, took the duty to train her daughter until then — time well spent.

Now Charice enjoys a rising star status in pop music, and the young, humble, sweetheart from the Philippines has been taken under the wing of music legend David Foster, performed with Celine Dion, has a “fairy godmother” in Oprah Winfrey and, according to news reports this week, will have a recurring role in next season’s hit TV show “Glee.” Her single, “Pyramid,” has gotten considerable play on pop radio.

Before she blows up big, we get a chance to catch her at Chickenfest, where she headlines Saturday’s lineup with Kat DeLuna and Jaicko.

P-C: You’ve had a lot of success through “Little Big Star” and “Star King;” how did that prepare you for the life you’re living now?

Charice: I think not only by “Little Big Star” and “Star King” but all the singing contests that I joined, it really, really helped me, and by a (YouTube user who originally posted videos of Charice) posting videos of me is where it all started. I mean right now, I don’t know if I’m really prepared for everything but (the YouTube user) also really, really helped and I’m still trying because I didn’t expect all this.

P-C: You’ve appeared as a guest on “Oprah” quite a few times; describe your relationship with Oprah.

Charice: Well, she’s like my fairy godmother … like making all my wishes come true.

P-C: Has she said any memorable words to you that have really stuck with you?

Charice: Well the first time I met her, she told me, “Don’t lose hope, I promise you something big will happen.” And the other one she told me was, “I’m proud of you” and “always keep your faith.”

P-C: How did you first get in touch with Oprah? Did her people seek you out?

Charice: Her people found me on YouTube and they told me that Oprah was like, “I don’t want to see the video. I want to be surprised.” That’s why when I was on the show for the first time, that was the first time she saw me perform.

P-C: I read in US magazine that you have “Bieber Fever.”

Charice: Oh yeah (laughs). But it’s not that. I’m not really like — the other teenagers are like (in a fast, high-pitched voice) “Oh my God Justin Bieber.” I’ve got “Bieber Fever” but he’s like a little brother. I love his story and everything. I met him at Oprah’s show and he’s really, really nice.

P-C: What is it about you and Justin that gained you so many fans in such little time?

Charice: I think it’s about the story. It’s really important to the artist, knowing their story. So I figure that’s one of the reasons why Justin Bieber — that’s why all the people love him, because of his story. … He’s amazing, a great performer and all that but the story is different.

P-C: David Foster was quoted in Newsday saying “Charice is, for sure, the next global superstar.” And in that same article, an assistant professor of Asian-American Studies at the University of California-Irvine said, and this is kind of interesting, that “the recording industry is a very black and white sort of place” and referring to you, “it’s difficult to see where she would fit in as an icon because there hasn’t been somebody who looks like her.” How does it feel to have that kind of weight on your shoulders, when they’re saying you cannot only break ground for music but you can break ground for an entire culture?

Charice: (gasps) My gosh, it’s really a big, big, big, big responsibility for me and a lot of pressure because, of course, I’m Asian, and sometimes I’m kind of like scared. … I just want to thank all of those people, especially David, for saying all that. It’s really flattering and (pause) a lot of pressure.

P-C: Do you think you can prove these people right?

Charice: I’m trying. I don’t want to say yes, but I’m really, really trying my best.

The whole day yesterday seemed so much a blessing, meeting almost a hundred true Chasters in a briefing before the concert, sitting on front center seats just 6 rows away from the stage, then a dream come true of meeting and having my pic taken with this little darling after the concert… there’s just too much to share….

The Philippine International Convention Center is an imposing structure by itself, one of the lasting contributions of a Filipino national artist, the well-respected Architect Leandro Locsin. This venue has been host to numerous prestigious events including the IMF-World Bank Meeting of 1976 and the 1994 Miss Universe Pageant, aside from numerous concerts of International Recording Artists including our very own Lea Salonga. I knew there and then that this concert of Charice would be very different from last year’s SMX concert.

Excited? Was I?… well, if being at the venue at 5 pm when the concert starts at 8:30 isn’t, then I don’t know what excited is… but of course, this gave me a chance to observe the briefing and the handing out of tickets (from our very generous donors here and abroad) to the lucky Chasters who were chosen by the CM staff… there was even free dinner for 40 lucky people! Meeting Pin, Narita, Tintol, Irmsmith, and our lovable volunteer Noellen (who flew in from HK just to watch) is just icing on the cake! (but this is an altogether different article so…)

7:30 was a good time as any to enter the venue. The Plenary Hall where the concert was going to be held was an altogether different building from the Main Hall. Mother Dear of ChariceDiva was with me and a few other Chasters.When we entered the glass doors of the main entrance to the Plenary Hall, we were greeted by courteous ushers in their Filipiniana attire… there was no crowding or pushing of concert goers that we experienced at last year’s SMX concert. I regretted not having brought my DSLR with me as there was no inspection of personal belongings. It became obvious that cameras and videos were allowed!

I could see the stage set up from when I entered the venue and already, I was impressed. Being a passive person, I just had to try to contain my excitement. Anyway, when we got to our seats, I took time to look around. The venue is very well conceptualized with the seats going half-arena style around the main stage. The balconies were split left and right where center was for the technical area, director’s booth, spots etc. Seating capacity is 3,800 people. I breathed to myself, “finally, real class!” VIP seats were well cushioned and comfortable. On the stage, a grand piano was set up stage left, drums and amps right behind it (this would be where the electric guitars would be…). 3 keyboards and synthesizers were positioned in a triangle stage right… so I knew then that orchestration would be coming from these… and behind it were 7 mics, so this clued me in that the Ryan Cayabyab singers would also provide backup vocals.

The true test then comes from Charice management having decided to stage a Valentine’s Concert when every other artist has their own concert on the same weekend. By 8 pm, the hall was half-full… although I knew of the penchant of the Filipino concert goer who always seem to come late, but all the same, this left me for pause… “mapuno kaya? (will the venue fill up?) I took a little time to say a prayer, for this was the concert of my little darling after all! I tried to assess the crowd, and this was what I found consistent from the first SMX concert. Majority of the fans were still from ages 30 up, and a good number of them from the ever golden ages of 50 up! Oh how we Lolos and Lolas really love this little darling of ours!

8:30 pm. A techie came up and started to turn on the wireless mics of the backup singers and then came out with a microphone stand and the bejewelled microphone (that we all know too well) and positioned it centerstage. Finally.

The musicians came out one by one. I recognized Teacher Monet of Philippine Dream Academy take 2^nd keyboard. The rest were seasoned backup musicians. I had faith that Ryan Cayabyab would not settle for anything less. When all were in position, Mr. C entered the stage. While applause greeted him, there was a noticeable smattering of boos that came out. I wished then that these fans would have held on and let the man prove himself before passing judgement… sad. But anyway! Ryan started off with an overture like no other! As I am always prone to do in every concert I watch, the overture is where I figure out if the sound system is good and well balanced. Tonight, each piano stroke was precise and distinct, each strum of the rhythm guitar melodious, the bass guitar deep and true, the keyboards and synthesizers easily mimicking brass and string sections of a full orchestra. The Maestro’s touch was as good as ever and I started to settle down. This was going to be good!

The moment we’ve all been waiting for! Charice! She comes out and takes center stage. My oh my! My little darling is no longer the same girl who first sang as a surprise guest for David Foster and Friends, nor with Celine Dion, nor in Oprah. She has blossomed into one fine lady. Her fine straight amber hair juxtaposed against an all-black outfit, the sunrays from the mobile lights all pointing to that one spot where she was standing. Beautiful is what she is…

The first song Halo already assures me that Charice is in fine form and in good condition and she follows this up with her “birit” songs which are all our favourites. Of course, nothing compares to hearing her sing “Listen” live no matter how mesmerized we were with her when she sang the same in Italy and in the Oscars. Anyway, we’ve been so used to hearing her sing her usual repertoire so that every intricate and distinct deviation from David Foster’s arrangements become so obvious… and indeed there were! I’ve always surmised that what makes Charice a great singer is because she is quite the mimicker. But now, where she used to sing Whitney like Whitney, Celine like Celine, or Mariah like Mariah, she now covers these artists like a Charice and has made their songs her very own. I like the fact that Mr. C complimented these by having his own subtle but distinct arrangement from Foster’s. What follows after the “usual” songs is what altogether makes me admire our grown up girl all the more. Mr. C knows that diversity and innate ability to tackle different kinds of music genre is what very well separate the good ones from the great ones and I am glad that he prepared a program that shows us how Charice is able to handle it.

There were 4 guests in the concert. First was Mr. George Yang whom we all know owns the McDonald’s food chain here in the country. Is that his only claim to fame? Of course not. He dabbles in classical singing when he’s not busy running his empire. He pairs up with Charice to sing “The Prayer”. Now, I am not as unrelenting as other chasters so I forgive the slight flaws in pronunciation… (please show me a Chinese who can sing in Italian flawlessly) and I can understand that singing a duet with Charice can truly intimidate even one of the richest men here in Asia but I forgive him that as long as he continues to support and sponsor our princess with more concerts in the future… hint! hint! Nevertheless, he was not shabby at all! Impressive is what I can say… for someone whose singing is just a hobby.

The fun part of the show was when the Ryan Cayabyab singers came up front to their own number and interplay with Charice. Take it from Ryan not to miss the opportunity to showcase good talent and the Burt Bacharach medley shows where most of Ryan’s inspirations and style come from. The RCS themselves individually sounded great but blending seven voices together was even better… but of course, people my age just loves to hear our kind of music… sentimental old me… or us, haha! Did I say interplay? When Charice comes out to do “Hopelessly Devoted to you” with the boys and that Tagalog song (was this an April Boy classic or an Aegis song? sorry, not good with titles) with the girls

is what we love about Charice, her playful and comedic flair that endears her the more to her fans…

Eric Santos is one of our better young singers and he impresses! He has a new fan in me. I was really laughing it up when he made light of what Charice was wearing even while they were singing their duet. Charice herself was riding along and the audience loved it! This reminds me of the many comments about the wardrobe of our princess… me? I have never been bothered at all… just as Charice isn’t. True talent comes out no matter what you wear… just imagine the waif Eponine dressed in rags being given a standing ovation after she sings her aria!

Then we have the very well-loved and popular Ogie Alcasid (whom we all know is now the better half of Regine Velasquez). This is singer, songwriter, comedian and actor all rolled into one. “Walang kupas” (hasn’t faded at all, or good as ever) is all I can say. Ogie gets his fair share of “I Labyo!” yells from the crowd and he gets off on Charice calling him “Tito Ogie” (Uncle Ogie) and gets back at her by telling her that her concert should be retitled Charice in Concert with the Elders… Lolo Ryan, Lolo George, Kuya Eric and Tito Ogie!

The Tagalog medley! What can I say? Here is where sheer talent seems to drive itself straight into our hearts and pound out all our love and admiration for this little girl. I personally love it when Charice sings out the great Filipino songs! Ryan’s arrangement for this medley is impeccable… the build up to the final note of “May Bukas Pa” the best I’ve seen or heard so far from all the concerts I’ve seen in my life. Bravo Charice!

I take opportunity to look around when lights go up around the 3^rd song and I see that the hall has filled up. I am glad that God has answered my prayers. The concert itself was “tight” which meant that it was well-planned, with a theme and a storyboard laid out. Mr. C chose numbers that would cater to everyone so it was diverse… from Halo for the young, to the Burt Bacharach medley for the oldies, to the Tagalog medley. This concert was technically perfect. Sound was well balanced, lead vocals a tad louder and mixing well with backups but the piano strokes of Mr. C well pronounced and blending well with Charice’s voice. The lighting was perfect and well thought out, no random bursts, a lone spotlight always shining on Mr. C, the other spots well focused on Charice or the guests. I give kudos to the professional musicians. There was one instance where Charice entered a bar earlier but a mere hand signal from Mr. C had the musicians adjusting immediately without anyone noticing. I felt that it was important that Charice had trusted Mr. C so much so that she was relaxed and it showed. I felt that it was also good that Charice could take center stage with different singers and still complement each one, no matter how different from each other they were. While we feel that Charice is the one, the truth is, she is not the only one. Let her learn the ropes some more. This industry is unforgiving to those who think they can all do it alone but very rewarding to those who are able to overcome these obstacles along the way. Last night, Charice was a star all the more shining brighter. The future offers so much more for her.

George Yang teaches Charice that music is for everyone, whether rich or poor. Eric Santos and the Ryan Cayabyab Singers show that God rewards talent to everyone be it singing or something else and no one has a monopoly of it. Ogie Alcasid teaches Charice durability and what it takes to last long in this industry. And Ryan Cayabyab, I pray, shows Charice perfection in one’s craft, humility, and someday I pray, the path one takes to become this country’s National Artist, much like National Artist Arch. Locsin who built the PICC where she sang last night and National Artist Maestro Ryan Cayabyab who played for her last night. Happy Valentine’s, my little darling Charice! and thank you for the best concert so far in my life!

Billed as Charice in Concert! by Ryan Cayabyab the one-night musical event to be mounted by Xclusive Hits & Events, Inc. will also feature Erik Santos, George Yang and the Ryan Cayabyab Singers, with the special participation of Ogie Alcasid.

Directed by Ryan Cayabyab, the concert will feature the extraordinary talent and style of the 17-year old singing wonder as she performs a breathtaking repertoire of pop, R&B and soul hits popularized by Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, among many others.

A product of numerous singing competitions since age seven, Charice gained worldwide attention in 2007 after videos of her live performances were posted on the YouTube until they caught the attention of Ellen DeGeneres, who invited her to appear in the Dec.19, 2007 episode of her show.

Charice became an instant hit with her performance of “I Will Always Love You” and “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

Five months later, she appeared in the May 12, 2008 edition of The Oprah Winfrey Show, where her performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” greatly impressed Oprah that she subsequently recommended Charice to be under the wings of music producer David Foster.

Her association with Foster marked a major turning point in Charice’s career and opened new doors to more and bigger opportunities in the international music and entertainment industry.

She performed with Foster for the first time during the May 17 opening of MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut, followed by her debut on the international concert stage in Foster’s May 23 tribute concert, Hitman: David Foster and Friends, at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, where she performed a medley of songs from “The Bodyguard” and her standard, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

Charice also went on to perform with Andrea Bocelli during her birthday concert on Sept. 26, 2008 in his hometown of Lajatico, Tuscany, Italy, where, aside from her solo numbers, she also did a duet of “The Prayer” with the famous tenor in front of more than 8,000 people.

She also sang a duet of “Because You Loved Me” with Celine Dion on Sept. 15, 2008 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, which earned rave reviews in The New York Post and The New York Times. The performance was eventually featured on the Sept. 19, 2008 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

She made her second appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show on Sept. 9, 2008, during which the celebrated host described her at “the most talented girl in the world” after hearing her perform Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” with Foster on the piano.

During her most recent appearance on the same program, Charice elicited the ultimate tribute from Oprah: “You are a force to be reckoned with. That voice comes from something bigger than yourself. You’re pulling it up out of some place deeper than your little body.”

The singer’s outstanding vocal quality—which has been compared with those of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion (she also considers Mariah Carey and Regine Velasquez as her other musical influences)—likewise prompted a chorus of praises from other musical and entertainment celebrities, such as David Foster and Josh Groban

She also received a compliment from The New York Post, which once called her a vocal prodigy for being able to sing “big songs” even in her tender age.

Last year, Charice, who spent a great part of it in America, recorded her debut US album, performed in the David Foster and Friends 10-city North American tour, and appeared in her first feature film, Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel.

In the movie, which was recently shown in Philippine theaters, Charice appeared as herself and is a part of the official film soundtrack with her performance of Alicia Keys’ “No One.”

As 2009 was about to end, the singer added another feather to her cap when she topped an online poll by the Oprah Winfrey show, beating seven international singing superstars: Whitney Houston, James Taylor, Michael Buble, Rascal Flatts, Jennifer Hudson, Journey and Black Eyed Peas.

Charice was picked as the winner of the Best Oprah Show Musical Performance award, receiving 70 percent of total votes for her performance of “Note To God,” her debut international single that was launched on the show last May 18.

Her coming Valentine show brings back the singing star to the local concert scene eight months after her first major solo concert last June 27 at the SMX Convention Center at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Below, Charice dedicates a song especially to PhoenixSong (aka Ashley) at 1:00 when she learned that Phoenix was standing by the ET room for 17 hours, just waiting for Charice to appear! Awww, Phoenix says it was worth the wait, even though she was practically keeling over on her webcam, eyes droopy from fatigue. And then Charice serenaded us with several song snippets: Breathe In-Breathe Out, When I Was a Boy (Beyonce), the mash-up of Already Gone (Kelly Clarkson) and Halo (by Beyonce), Domino, The Climb, and, finally, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. She also gave us flowers, lol at 3:45, and confirmed that Pyramid’s “club” version will be released this month and the “pop” version later on January 1st, 2010.

The ET room allows you to “dock” up to 3 people at a time so you have video as well as audio of 3 persons. There were up to 70 people total in the room, many not having a webcam or microphone hook-up, but you could also text message like the regular chatbox. So the screen was moving pretty quickly at times and you had to read faaast, lol.

Charice said her looong good-byes after an hour, quite funny, so she could have her dinner. However, ‘MommyRaqz’ slash/Charice (in disguise? hehe, probably both of them again) returned a short while later to join us, with their video turned off this time. And they chatted by text just like the rest of us, and took turns with the chasters singing – Marty, Alex, and Phoenix, in particular, still hanging on after now 18 hours! Phoenix sang a couple of songs, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Charice and MomRaqz were so impressed that Mom invited Phoenix to contact her on Skype so she could give her some personal tips on singing techniques. Needless to say, Phoenix jumped on the opportunity right away. She returned to ET room a short time later, on cloud nine, to report that she got to have a one-on-one conversation with Charice on Skype, wow!

Well, it was a priceless evening for all of us, and especially for PhoenixSong. We’re all jealous, in a good way. Charice and MommyRaqz are so humble and down-to-earth to visit us occasionally in the ET room, just being ‘one of the guys.’ Thank you, Charice and MommyRaqz. We love you!

Add singing sensation Charice and several other guest soloists—Joey Albert, Maria Christina “Kit” Navarro, Isabella “Bella” Ramos and Joanne Marie Villanueva. The result? Possibly the best holiday musical gift for Fil-Ams this Christmas season. And it’s taking place next Sunday, Dec. 6, 5 p.m. at the grand Pasadena Civic Auditorium, the former home of the Emmy Awards. “Handog ng Faso sa Pasko” is the second and much-awaited concert of Faso since it made its historic debut in May this year.

When we attended a rehearsal in the auditorium of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in LA last Tuesday evening, we got caught up in the magnitude of the event. The place was packed. After all, there are two adult and four children’s choirs involved. It was the first time that the choirs and the orchestra rehearsed together.

The orchestra sounded very good as Robert “Bob” Shroder, Faso’s musical director and conductor, went through several holiday pieces.

Onlookers, mostly parents of the children’s choir members, couldn’t help but applaud classical soprano Kit as she practiced her songs with the orchestra. We’re glad that the classical soprano is again in the show because she was quite a revelation in Faso’s debut concert. When the children stood up to practice their songs with the orchestra, the combination of beautiful, clear voices and instrumental sounds was instantly heartwarming.

Surprise treat

We were sorry to leave and miss hearing the adult choirs because we had to meet a column deadline. But we went away enthusiastic for the concert at the Pasadena Civic which, we’re told, will be decorated with colorful Christmas parols come Dec. 6. Add the Charice factor and the anticipation level for the show goes even higher.

“I am so excited to be able to work with the very talented young Filipina singer,” Bob told us the following day via e-mail. “This is the first time that her fans will experience watching their idol sing her favorite songs with a full Filipino orchestra.”

Christopher “Pete” Avendaño, a UST-trained tenor who impressed the audience in Faso’s first show, agreed:

“Charice will definitely bring excitement to the concert. I myself am a big fan of hers. A lot of us have not seen her perform live so it will be a great treat to have her in the concert. After Faso announced that Charice will be joining the show, everyone got very excited. It’s going to be a great night of talent and music.”

There is a number from Charice that the organizers would like to keep as a surprise treat.

Bob said, “Definitely, Charice will sing ‘Note to God,’ her first single from her forthcoming international album. I am grateful to David Foster for lending us the musical arrangements.”

Pete, who has released an album, “Kundiman,” is the music director of the participating children’s choirs from three Catholic schools, Our Lady of Loretto, Immaculate Heart of Mary and Blessed Sacrament; and one church, Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Filipino adult choir from the same church is joining the concert. He trained them to learn the songs for “Handog…”

The other choir is the Philippine Chamber Singers-Los Angeles (PCS-LA) which Peter described as “a group of young, dynamic, and vibrant Filipino Music lovers united by their passion for choral singing. The singers’ aim is to promote quintessential Filipino choral literature in and around Southern California. PCS-LA is a very active participant in community outreach appearances and various festivals. Last year, they made their fourth appearance in the World Festival of Sacred Music Los Angeles, which was spearheaded by UCLA. The chorus and its members played major roles in the US production of the Filipino musical opera, ‘Karim at Jasmin’ at the Long Beach Convention Center.”

Among the choir’s members are Gelo Francisco, Annie and Ed Nepomuceno, who comprise the vocal group 3 of a Kind. Ed and another member, Emam Miranda also belong to the acclaimed Los Angeles Master Chorale.

The Asian Journal Foundation, Inc., led by Fil-Am community leaders Roger and Cora Oriel, are pulling out all the stops to make the concert a special and memorable one. At 3 p.m., before the Pasadena Civic’s doors are opened, the Kultura Philippine Folk Arts and an all-male Filipino choir will perform.

Holiday music 
“Christmas is a family celebration,” explained Bob who studied at UP Diliman and played for the Manila Symphony Orchestra and Manila Chamber Orchestra. “It’s all about Jesus and the Holy Family so this is a great opportunity for parents to introduce to their children to how we Filipinos celebrate Christmas, and get them exposed to symphonic music and the beauty of Filipino music. We encourage parents to bring their children.”

Fresh from her most successful 10-city concert tour with David Foster and Friends, international sensation Charice will be the special guest in the Christmas concerto, Handog ng FASO sa Pasko. Charice has been referred to by Oprah Winfrey on her September 9 show as “The Most Talented Girl in the World.” Oprah recommended that music producer David Foster take the young singer under his wing. Foster was so impressed with Charice that she has been a part of his concert tours since last year.

Now undoubtedly one of the Philippines’ biggest musical sensations, Charice has performed with some of the world’s best artists which include Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. And on December 6 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium at 5pm, Charice will grace the stage with the first Filipino American Symphony Orchestra (FASO) in LA’s most awaited Christmas concerto.

The brisk ticket sales of Handog ng Faso sa Pasko rose to all-time high records ever since word came out a few days ago that Charice will be a special guest in the show. “We already bought many tickets for the show,” said Aida, an excited Fil-Am who can’t wait for the Christmas concert. “But when we learned Charice will be one of the guests, we reserved more tickets. It will surely be a great show!” she added.

Handog ng FASO sa Pasko promises to be a great, unforgettable show indeed! Aside from Charice and the 60-member superb orchestra, Handog will feature outstanding singers like Joey Albert, sopranos Kit Navarro and Isabella Ramos, Joanne Marie Villanueva, and several excellent Fil-Am adult and children’s choirs as Immaculate Heart Choir, Philippine Chamber Singers of Los Angeles, IHMC Children’s Choir, Immaculate Heart of Mary Children’s Choir, Our Lady of Loretto Children’s Choir and Blessed Sacrament Children’s Choir. The Christmas show will present well-loved Pinoy Christmas carols and excerpts from Handel’s Messiah.

Peter Cetera (formerly of Chicago) and Philip Bailey (of Earth, Wind and Fire) were there when the tour hit the Prudential Center in Newark, Saturday. So were Deborah Cox, “American Idol” alumni Ruben Studdard and Michael Johns, and the quartet, the Canadian Tenors. But the closing slot went to a woman who has not released an album in the United States yet: Charice, a 17-year-old from the Philippines who is well known her own country, and is being mentored by Foster for worldwide stardom.

She has a big voice and, like another Foster protege, Celine Dion, projects a sense of steely determination when she sings. In this show, she was called on to belt out songs Foster has produced and/or co-written for divas Dion (”The Power of Love”) and Whitney Houston (”I Will Always Love You,” “I Have Nothing”), as well as her own Foster-produced single, “Note To God.” Her poise and vocal command were impressive, especially in light of her youth. She ended her memorable mini-set with “I Will Survive,” one of the few songs in the show that Foster didn’t write or produce.

As expected, it was an evening of clean-cut, immaculately crafted pop music. Foster never has been hip, but his knack for helping singers make the most of their talents — two of his recent finds are Josh Groban and Michael Buble — is beyond question.

Foster, 59, served as the show’s amiable host, and accompanied everyone on piano. At several points, he emphasized that this was the third show of his first tour, ever.

Johns sang two of Foster’s rock hits: “She’s a Beauty” and “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion),” recorded by the Tubes and John Parr, respectively. The show’s three backing vocalists, meanwhile, tackled the “West Side Story” ballad “Somewhere” (which Foster produced for Barbra Streisand) and “Got To Be Real,” his disco hit with Cheryl Lynn.

Studdard stood in for Al Jarreau (the swinging “Mornin’”) and All-4-One (the earnest “I Swear”), and brought a touch of blues grit to “Home,” a hit for both Buble and country singer Blake Shelton.

Cetera and Bailey sang some of the buttery pop-soul hits they have made with Foster, and also briefly touched on their non-Foster history — Bailey with an excerpt from “Easy Lover,” Cetera with “If You Leave Me Now.”

Foster will soon embark on his second tour, joining Andrea Bocelli to perform songs from Bocelli’s upcoming, Foster-produced holiday album, “My Christmas.” Stops will include the Izod Center in East Rutherford, Dec. 5.
