Charice Beats Beyonce’s Run on US Billboard Hot 100

As expected, the pilot episode of American hit show Glee’s Second Season sent another set of tunes to the higher echelons of the US Billboard Hot 100 – with two songs featuring Filipino teen singer Charice Pempengco.

Aside from giving the YouTube sensation two of her highest-charting songs yet on the tally, the feat also allowed her to surpass a record of R&B/pop singer Beyonce – when Charice’s Glee cover of “Listen” charted higher than the former Destiny Child singer’s original. Read the full story

If you’ve heard Charice, you may think there’s nothing the 18-year-old can’t sing. Still, some songs pose a challenge. “Halo” is one of the hardest songs – ever,” she says of the Beyonce hit. “There’s a lot of people who can sing it, but not the way that Beyonce sang it.” Read the full story

Charice — About to Pop

CHARICE stopped by PopEater’s New York office on May 12, 2010. PopEater is a very popular website (15 million monthly views) which gives you the hottest entertainment news and celebrity gossip about your favorite movies, music and TV celebrities. Coincidentally the last time we featured a PopEater article at CM was when they interviewed David Foster last October, 2009, to talk about “Finding The Next Big Thing.” Now it seems we’ve come full circle as PopEater interviews Charice and talks about…

Why She’s About to Pop: Since her childhood years as a YouTube sensation, Charice wowed audiences worldwide with her powerful voice. Channeling Whitney Houston, the petite singer earned the attention of media moguls and legendary producer David Foster. Since her live duets with her idols Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli, Charice has stepped away from covers and developed a style that’s more her own. On her recently released self-titled album, Charice breaks through with a new pop and R&B sound. Read the full story

Charice’s Pyramid gets upperhand over Lady Gaga, Beyoncé duet in US chart

Just five weeks after its debut in the US Billboard Dance/Club Play Song chart, international Filipino singer Charice’s song “Pyramid” has had even the likes of Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s song “Telephone” eating dust.
For the week ending April 3, “Pyramid” is up from number 26 to 22 vis-avis “Telephone” which plunges to number 25 from number 18 after peaking at number one in the chart.
Charice is one of few Filipino artists who has achieved the feat of entering the Billboard Dance chart. In the ’90s, Jocelyn Enriquez, whose parents hail from Pangasinan, stormed both the dance and pop charts in the US with the songs “A Little Bit of Ecstasy” and “Do You Miss Me?”
Although it has not yet entered the Billboard Hot 100 (considered as the barometer of hit songs in America), Charice’s performance in “Pyramid” has prompted a New York Post music columnist to call her a “pop princess,” a title previous held by Britney Spears.
In that column item, Charice was described as “a new little chick” whose “mountain-and-valley vocals are the only reason you will need to fall in love with her sound.”
The music video for “Pyramid” debuted on music channels last March 19. Her album will hit the shelves on May 11, 2010.
In other news, Charice was recently shown a picture of children she has helped in Rwanda through Operation Smile, a non-government organization that provides free surgeries to children born with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities.
The picture has Rwandan children holding up a streamer that read, “Thank you Oprah+Charice” in appreciation for the funds (at least $5,000) that Charice was able to raise for them.
Charice is one of the biggest Internet sensations of our time. Her exposure on YouTube has led to her dicovery by Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey; the second, even calling her “the most talented girl in the world.”
