Long before she became an Oprah fave and a YouTube phenom with millions upon millions of hits, she was a little girl in the Philippines who sang in town fiestas and talent shows to help support her family financially. She posted videos of her performances on YouTube, and went viral. Millions of people saw her performances, including Ellen DeGeneres, who invited her to be on her show. She wowed the crowd with her renditions of “I Will Always Love You” and “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going,” and the president of the Philippines – along with the rest of the world – wanted her singing for them.

Fast forward a bit, and Charice found herself on Oprah Winfrey’s show “The World’s Smartest Kids,” and Oprah got right on the phone with superstar music producer David Foster. Foster invited her to perform in a show where she met one of her idols, Andrea Bocelli. Fast forward again, and here’s Charice singing a duet with Andrea Bocelli. Now, everyone wants to share the stage with her, including Celine Dion, who invited her to perform a duet of “Because You Loved Me” with her during her own concert. Charice dedicated that performance to her mom.

Charice released her first international single “Note to God” which climbed up the Billboard charts and paved the way for her to sing with David Archuleta. The album and club remixes of her hit song “Pyramid,” which featured Iyaz, hit the # 1 spot on the Billboard Dance/Club chart, making her the first Asian ever to have a hit in the top 10.

What’s next for Charice? It’s just been announced that she’ll joiin the cast of the hit show Glee. L.A. Chaster Vegas Road-trip/Concert Report

We, the L.A. Chasters thank everyone here for your patience in waiting for this report and the uploading of the concert videos. The good news is that there will be several EXCELLENT videos of the show coming very shortly.

This was a weekend that of us in the Chaster family in L.A. had been looking forward to since the Grammy Block Party just about a month ago. There is something special about Chasters that bind us together, where complete strangers can get together and feel like we’ve known each other for years, all bound by our love for Charice and all she represents.

Our group traveling to Vegas together consisted of younger singles to married couples with children, yet there was no wall or barriers hindering our conversations and fellowship for the 5 hour drive out to Vegas this morning. Charice’s CD was on the perpetual loop, and it was Charice karaoke throughout the entire drive out there, with sensational conversations about our special “Charice” moments shared between our Chaster family.

We finally arrived in Vegas around 3pm, and checked into our fabulous suite. We reached out to the Vegas Chasters, and all planned to meet at the show. After a quick pre-show meal, we arrived at the Henderson Pavilion just south of the Vegas strip, a fabulous outdoor concert venue with a tent covering the seating area. Much to our pleasant surprise, the weather had cooled down quite a bit by 7pm, and there was a very nice breeze blowing through the outdoor arena.

First impressions looking around the venue, there were A LOT of young teenage girls wearing red Big Time Rush t-shirts… yet, there also appeared to be a fair share of ‘older’ Asian fans scattered throughout the arena (no idea who they were there to see?)

To set the stage for our arrival, ChristineDL had not only prepared a fabulous six foot wide banner, with a beautiful picture of Charice with the message: “L.A. Chasters, We Labyo! At the Top Baby!”, but she also custom-made 8 amazing Charice T-shirts which we all wore into the arena. There were several groups of people who turned toward our group and gave a smiling endorsement, along with some who wanted to take pictures of our T-shirts and the banner.

The show kicked off at 7pm, and after two acts, I could tell that the crowd was definitely ready and willing to ‘party’ with Charice, as the mood in the crowd was festive. During the break after the 2nd act, I was sitting next to ChristineDL who looked up to the top level of the arena, and said that she really thought there was a ‘meet and greet’ going on with Charice! I looked up and saw a huge line of people waiting for someone/thing, which appeared simply like a line of people waiting for food.

I told ChristineDL not to waste her time going up to the top of the arena as there could be no possible way that Charice was doing a meet and greet up there without us knowing about it! Yet, something deep inside her Chaster heart kept urging ChristineDL to go up to verify whether Charice was up there, and she thought she had spotted someone holding up a red Charice CD standing in that line. I wished her luck and saw her jet off to the top of the arena to that mysterious line of people…

About 7 minutes later, Jazzy received a call on his cell phone from his wife who had accompanied ChristineDL on her trek for what I thought was a very long food line. To my utter and complete surprise, Jazzy’s wife had called to relay that Charice INDEED was up on the top level of the arena signing autographs and taking pictures with the fans! How could we not have known about this!!???

Jazzy, myself and the remaining L.A. Chasters abandoned our seats on the floor level, and raced up as fast as we could to where Charice was greeting the fans… and here is what transpired:

We got up there, and within seconds of our arrival, security had shut down the meet and greet and Charice had been escorted down to prepare for her set which was next. However, I came upon a frenzied ChristineDL who relayed the following story: She had gotten up there to find a HUGE line of fans waiting to see Charice, and knew that she would never get to the front of the line in time. So she waited next to Charice’s table, until the meet and greet was closed.

Then, only the video she took could do justice to what she actually did, but to describe the events in a nutshell, ChristineDL lost all sense of calm and composure and literally screamed at the top of her lungs for Charice to sign her custom-made T-shirt. At that time, the heavy duty Security team literally pushed ChristineDL away from Charice, but our fellow L.A. Chaster would not take a simple push from a security guard as a sign to back off and walk away from her moment.

ChristineDL literally pushed the security guards out of her way and made her way to Charice and in an ultra-excited state begged Charice to sign her T-shirt. And of course, needless to say, Charice being who she is, more than willingly complied with her request and signed her T-shirt! ChristineDL then told Charice to look out for our banner, and Charice acknowledged her with a smile and was then escorted away to the backstage area.

After experiencing the excitement of hearing ChristineDL’s story, we all rushed back to our floor seats which were in the 17th row center of the floor. Yet, we spotted some Vegas Chasters standing around the 5th row of the center floor, and so we decided to walk up to them to chat for a bit before Charice came on stage… then, we came to realize that security was not kicking anyone out of the standing area right in front of the stage, and so we just decided to ’stay’ down in the 5th row floor directly in front of the stage, and within moments of setting up our banner, the announcers said Charice was next, and we couldn’t have been any more excited!

During the long road trip out there, we had all speculated as to what songs she would sing… all of us were convinced that she would do a maximum of 3 songs, most likely Pyramid, Reset/I Love U Remix and Dance Medley. I really hoped Charice would start the set with the I Love You Remix, and to my joy, she did exactly that! Just as she came out on stage to the music (and she’s now seasoned enough to wait backstage before the music started), we proudly raised our 6 foot banner and welcomed Charice to the stage. Charice definitely saw our banner, and I could just sense that the show was gonna be one to remember.

After a high-tempo I Love You Remix, Charice thanked her Chasters for coming, and even gave a shout-out to the L.A. Chasters after seeing our banner!!! Without summarizing the songs in detail, as seeing the videos will give you all a sense of the environment, all I can say is that the environment in the entire arena was ELECTRIC. There was such a HIGH-ENERGY pervading throughout the arena, and I came to realize that these young, mostly Caucasian teenage girls were not just there to see Big Time Rush, but were actually SINGING ALONG to Charice’s songs!!! They were jumping up and down, dancing, and singing to Charice’s lyrics, particularly when Charice kicked into Pyramid. As you can see in the videos, Charice was having SO MUCH FUN during this performance that she invited a Chaster to come up on stage to sing Pyramid with her.

My fellow L.A. Chaster, UCLA_UST (Jay) screamed out his usual “UCLA love you” to Charice just before Charice sang Pyramid, and Charice looked at him as if to invite him up on stage… however, she also read a note that another female Chaster threw on stage, and then invited that Chaster up to sing with her. That Chaster was so stunned to be up there, but did a good job singing along, until Charice decided to take her own sunglasses off and actually put them on the female Chaster! What an amazing gift that she will treasure forever.

Charice seemed so overwhelmed by the love and energy that was filling the arena, that she seemed to have lost track of what her set-list was supposed to be! (It really felt for me like I was at a Charice SOLO concert!) Charice then sang the Dance Medley which got the crowd completely dancing and jumping, followed by another stirring rendition of In This Song. I couldn’t believe that she had already sung 4 songs by then… until she decided to sing one last song to end an amazing 5 song set with the Pyramid Remix! (I also think that she may have originally intended to sing only 3 songs, but due to the crowd response, literally forgot what her set-list was, and just added two more songs to the set!) Charice even had to take a much needed water break to clear her throat in between songs because she was having so much fun up there, and the crowd was just so amped up throughout her ENTIRE performance!

I hope the videos do justice to the unforgettable buzz in the arena during Charice’s performance, and it was clear that this younger generation of music listeners were already singing along to Charice’s songs, and I can’t even imagine what it will be like after the Glee premiere. And one last highlight were the UNBELIEVABLE dance moves that Charice kept displaying throughout her songs! One after another! MJ moves, her own signature moves, it really was a DANCE PARTY with Charice, and as much fun as she had on the stage, we couldn’t have had a better time watching our Princess blow everyone in the audience away with this power-performance!

After her set concluded, the security people made an announcement that the entire floor area in front of the stage had to be cleared of people or else they would cancel the remaining show! That was our signal to leave the arena and hope to catch Charice on her way out of the arena… unfortunately, as expected, she had to leave the arena right away for her flight for her NY show tomorrow, and after meeting up with some awesome Chasters from Utah(!) outside the arena, we concluded the evening with another fine meal reminiscing the truly unforgettable experience we had all shared together as a Chaster family!

And that is what I will conclude with here, that because of our Charice, we from all over the world are now part of the global Chaster family, and it’s such a beautiful symbol of how despite all the walls and barriers in our world, Charice has truly made these walls ‘come tumbling down’!

AND BREAKING NEWS CHASTERS!!! Charice will be having a David Foster and Friends Concert on October 15, IN LAS VEGAS!!! Can another L.A. Chaster road-trip await in the not too distant future?! Enjoy the videos Chasters! It was an AN-BEE-LEE-BA-BLLLEEE show!!!

Let’s call it SCAMS for short.

Charice Pempengco is the real-deal and everyone who knows her story, including the Ultimate Fairy Godmother Oprah Winfrey, wants this girl to win. Raised by a single mother who abandoned their abusive father which doomed them to the slums of the Philippines as a result, Charice and Her Voice entered singing contests starting at the crazy young age of seven (read: Michael Jackson) to help support her family.

It is not hyperbole to say this small child had the vocal ability of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion as adults, before she was even ten years old. By stroke of luck or fate or both, one of the more than 100 talent contests she entered in her homeland was filmed, and a year later a video of her singing “I Will Always Love You” with unbelievable vocal power hit Youtube. A producer at Oprah Winfrey saw it and Charice was promptly “rescued”– whisked to Chicago and onto the Oprah show with a title bestowed by her Fairy Godmother as “The Most Talented Girl In The World.”

Charice subsequently wowed the world through Oprah, met her idol Celine, and got a record deal with Celine’s one-time producer David Foster – someone with a gigantic track record in the past but who hasn’t had a #1 contemporary (read: young) POP hit in over a decade. But he could immediately secure Charice an arranged marriage with Warner Brothers/Reprise through his imprint distributed by the corporate behemoth, called 143 Records. The SCAMS still think you actually need a record deal to become a legitimate recording star. Meanwhile, she had already broken worldwide from the internet and TV.

How can the Pempengco family possibly navigate through our matrix? There’s been many others before them, the story as old as Hollywood itself: what’s yo’ dream? Charice and her mom were happy to be out of the ghetto and on the road to hers. There is no assigning blame for those humble desires.

And so it was. Crusty Foster of all people, whose production consistently appeals to the 40+ demo, emerges as the sudden Svengali to a ridiculously talented 16 year-old girl. His most recent proteges are Josh Groban and Michael Buble. While both are credible and successful, they aren’t relevant to pop radio at all– we’re talkin’ straight grandpa jams.

Like it or not, Charice’s peers and main chart competitors are kids her age, hello— Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. Except she has more raw talent than the both of them, the Jonas Brothers and damn near every Idol to hit the stage rolled together into one boring Seacrest recap. This is not up for argument from anyone with ears.

It is such a missed opportunity for the whole music business, one collapsing and needing to figure out every single way they can develop authentic talent that will grow alongside a 70-million-strong Millennium Generation, it makes me want to scream.

The reality is: if you don’t have a hit song it doesn’t matter how well you sing.

But the few who have that incredible gift, with once-in-a-lifetime uniqueness (demonstrated by her heritage alone) are the artists who change EVERYTHING.

That is why Charice Pempengco is so important.

Showbiz is who ya know, kids. David Foster is a close friend of Oprah’s and I believe the ONLY person in the music industry she dare interact with besides Russell Simmons, who doesn’t deal with people who actually sing, and hasn’t had an active role in the business since selling his Def Jam label in the mid 90’s. Applying this to the Pempengco scenario that’s called “Winning By Default”.

And so away Charice went. Into the studio to record her “American Debut” album. It was promptly released about a year later in May of 2010, to little fanfare. The same month she went back on Oprah’s show and performed one of the songs from that album called “Note To God,” written by pop powerhouse Diane Warren. But in a truly mystifying move, Warner Brothers/Reprise Records decided to release an entirely different song to radio– called “Pyramid”– which had a whopping three-week airplay life at the contemporary pop/rhythm formats. The main reason given by radio programmers for the song’s failure and lack of connection to the coveted 12-24 music demo? The song just sounded too adult next to…..hit music by peers Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus.

But what has happened since, is a fascinating mix of amazing and absurd.

More than anything it seems to be slowly morphing into a truly sad metaphor for how twisted up our values are in this country and how unbelievably disconnected they are, especially when we impose them on innocent people.

The most heart-wrenching part of this tale could potentially be the defining moment for Charice. At the end of June with her “Pyramid” single now off the charts and her debut album/aka dream languishing in obscurity, it was announced that Charice was added as a cast member to the smash hit television show Glee. No question this is a phenomenal, career-saving break for her.

Yet instead of embracing what will be her mark of greatness — Pinoy Power — she is already being taught to alter what makes her special. In a bombshell interview distributed by the Associated Press, this not-yet-media-savvy girl innocently reveals that in preparation for her television role she is getting cosmetic procedures to “look fresh on camera”. She is just 18.

Apparently this includes “non-invasive” procedures like Botox and Thermage to “make her naturally round face more narrow,” according to her plastic surgeon.

There is only one message this sends to impressionable young people, to a whole generation that is already overwhelmingly ethnic, of mixed heritages too like black and white, white and hispanic, black and asian, and an endless combination from there: Ethnic Is Ugly. Nothing could be further from the truth, yet here we have the most transparent example of it. A prodigiously talented Asian girl being told how to compete with another insanely talented Italian/Spanish girl for the biggest hit television show in America……WTH.

There is no other appropriate response except to put it all on BLAST.

“All people will be anticipating, ‘How will Charice look?” she says in the same interview, “is she good enough to pit against (Glee character) Rachel Berry? So of course there is tremendous pressure.”

Not one time does Charice mention her voice, her talent, her spirit and energy, and how THAT will pit so beautifully against Lea Michele’s (who plays Rachel Berry on Glee) amazing voice, talent, spirit and energy. These are things that can’t be altered, the marks of a True Star, the qualities that REALLY MATTER.

It is because of those intangibles that the stars are able to jump off the screen. Somebody tell Charice it ain’t really what it seems….

Though Ryan Murphy says the hitmaker “comes on in a very sort of minor part,” it obviously grows, and fast, because, notes Lea Michele, while “the rivalry [between our characters] is going to be what everyone will pin it as, you know Ryan — it’s never going to be what you think it’s going to be.”

Glee to Premiere on Tuesday, September 21

FOX’s hit show Glee will begin airing its second season on Tuesday, September 21 at 8pm, which will be its time slot for the first part of the 2010-2011 season. The show will return to its original slot of Wednesdays at 9pm sometime in 2011.

The show, created by Ryan Murphy, recently earned 19 Emmy Award nominations, including nods for stars Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, and Chris Colfer, along with guest stars Kristin Chenoweth, Neil Patrick Harris, and Mike O’Malley.

As previously reported, Chenoweth will make another guest appearance next season as April Rhodes; other confirmed guest stars include Broadway veteran John Stamos, film star Javier Bardem, as well as recording artist Charice, who will have a recurring role.

The series has already spawned four hit CDs, with more recordings planned for the coming season. Murphy has already confirmed that one episode will feature the songs of Britney Spears.

“Glee” Writers Drop Hints About Season No. 2

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – In the second season of “Glee”, high school students Rachel and Finn will stay together, guest star Kristin Chenoweth will “definitely” be back, and actor Javier Bardem will make an appearance.

Ryan Murphy, the creator of the Emmy-nominated TV musical comedy, and fellow writers Ian Brennan and Brad Fulchuk also say there will be just five musical numbers per episode and more emphasis on the show’s colorful characters.

Schoolteacher Will’s ex-wife Terri (played by Jessalyn Gilsig) will date a hot guy in a bid to make Will green with jealousy, and ditzy cheerleader Brittany, played by Heather Morris, will see her role expanded, the writers told a panel session in Beverly Hills on Monday.

The much-anticipated second season will begin airing on September 21, broadcaster Fox said on Tuesday. It will include a Britney Spears-themed episode that is expected to feature ditzy blonde “Glee” character Brittany in her first solo singing roles.

Murphy said he was humbled by the show’s success. “I feel very stunned that people got it in a big way… because I do think it’s a very unusual show and a very unusual tone…There’s never been a musical on television that has worked, so the fact that it is embraced as much as it has been is just amazing to me,” he said.

Murphy confirmed conflicting reports that he is writing a guest part for Bardem, who won an Oscar for his role in the 2007 movie “No Country for Old Men”, after talking with the Spanish actor at the Cannes film festival in May.

“He goes, ‘I do not want to talk about Cannes. I want to talk about Glee.’ He had downloaded every episode…He knew everything about everybody and he said, ‘I want to come on. Will you write me something?’ So how do you say ‘no’ to Javier Bardem?,” Murphy said.

Murphy said there were also openings for the return of other guest stars, Neil Patrick Harris, Idina Menzel and Jonathan Groff, with Chenoweth a certainty.

And Season 2 will include not just the choir sectional and regional competitions, but also nationals. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the New Directions choir will be getting there….stay tuned.

Since Oprah featured Pempengco, known simply as Charice, on her talk show in 2008, the pop singer’s profile has grown steadily. Although she is just 18, her striking, powerful voice has already shared stages with the likes of tenor Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion.

Now her single “Pyramid,” which she recorded with singer Iyaz and was released in the United States in March from her self-titled debut album, has received U.S. radio airplay, and a remixed version has soared to the top of the U.S. Billboard dance charts.

But the young singer, whose career was in part propelled by initial popularity on video sharing website YouTube, told Reuters she is not getting caught up in all the attention and has a different career path she eventually wants to pursue.

“I want to be a lawyer,” she said in an interview with Reuters Television. “Being a famous singer or an international singer — that’s my dream, too, but my main goal is to be a real student and be able to graduate and be a lawyer and have my own business.”

Although her schedule over this month has her flying throughout Asia on her first big tour in South Korea, Philippines, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia, Charice said she uses her school books to come down from the rush of playing in concert.

“Some of my friends are giving me law books,” she said. “I love reading those. It’s like my relaxation.”

The singer credits her upbringing growing up in San Pedro in the Philippines and singing in amateur singing contests as the daughter of a struggling single mother for her drive and ambition.

“I’m mature because of my past,” she said, admitting she could be a little bossy. “At (my) age of six years, my mom was getting advice from me.”

She already has movie credits to her name, including a brief cameo in the U.S. animated children’s movie “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”.

And in late July, she will start working with the cast and producers of U.S. television series “Glee” in Los Angeles.

“I haven’t gotten the script yet but I think I’m going to play a foreign student,” she said. “I’m really nervous. But I’m trying to be normal and act like myself on the set.”

Hey guys. I’m Joslyn Davis, and you’re watching ClevverTV.

Our latest artist spotlight is on a Teenage singing sensation who is quickly and very swiftly taking the music world by storm. After several appearances on the Oprah show, and a collaboration with David Foster, who btw is one of the most successful music producers in the world, Charice is poised to become a household name.

She was born in the Philippines, and after a fantastic performance of Happy Birthday when she was only 4 years old, her mom decided to put her in singing lessons. And that was it. By age 7, Charice was performing in contests all over the place. But it wasn’t until a few years later that she really hit it big – and a youtube video of a performance on a Filipino talent show – really let Charice catch the attention of American big wigs like Oprah and Ellen Degeneres.

And with that, Charice went on to perform with the talents of people like Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban and even Michael Buble.

So what’s next for the young rising star? Well she said she really wants to dance and sing with Justin Timberlake. But until that actually happens, she still has a ton to look forward to…including the success of her song Pyramid and her upcoming role as an exchange student on Fox’s hit show Glee.

Safe to say that Charice is the star to watch right now. If she wasn’t already on your radar, then she should be.

Charice and Justin Bieber are two of the hottest teen pop stars on the planet right now. Both singing sensations made appearances on a highly publicized episode of “Oprah” earlier this year. And it looks like Justin and Charice could once again find themselves making appearances on the same television show in the future.

Michael Ausiello from Entertainment Weekly has recently confirmed that Charice will definitely be joining the cast of “Glee” next season. Charice denied rumors of a future appearance earlier this year via Twitter. “I just want to let you all know, that it’s not true that I’m going to be on Glee,” Charice tweeted earlier this month.

Don’t expect to see Charice playing herself when she joins the cast in the fall. She will play a foreign exchange student, giving Lea Michele’s character a run for her money in glee club.

While nothing has been confirmed with Justin Bieber for next season, a virtual Bieber campaign has been active on the internet for the past several months. Even some of the “Glee” cast members are rallying for Justin to join the team.
Cory Monteith is pulling for the teen pop star to make an appearance in the future. “I think it would be fun,” Monteith recently told E! News. “What’s wrong with a little Bieb? Everyone needs to be a little infected by the Biebonic plague.”

Despite her denials earlier this month Filipino singing sensation Charice has officially booked an arc on season two of “Glee” as a foreign exchange student whose killer pipes make Rachel Berry see red. People everywhere are freaking out over the news — and yet I’m sitting here wondering, “who the eff is Charice?”

‘Glee’: Charice confirmed as recurring role; no ‘Glee’ movies yet, says Ryan Murphy

Charice, or Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco, the internationally-known pop star from the Philippines, will be joining the “Glee” kids of McKinley High in a recurring guest role in Season 2, FOX confirms to Zap2it. She’s got some pretty decent vocal chops (Oprah once called her the most talented girl in the world), so we can’t wait to see her go up against Lea Michele’s Rachel Berry.

In other “Glee’ news, creator Ryan Murphy is dispelling the notion of any “Glee” movies coming to the big screen. Murphy tells EW, “There will be no ‘Glee’ movie in the foreseeable future. Despite overtures, I and the studio have decided we want to put our energy into the second season with no distractions for the cast.”

It was recently revealed that the “Glee” actors all have a clause in their contracts for up to three feature length movies. But Murphy just said “foreseeable future” …

‘Glee’ Gets Bigger—Filipino Pop Star Charice To Join The Cast

18-year old pop star Charice Pempengco, who hails from the Philippenes, will be joining the cast of Glee as a guest star during the second season. Because the one thing a show with an already giant cast needs is yet another supporting player!

But is joining the cast (even if for a limited time) of the Fox hit a smart move for the pop star? Charice already has a pretty successful career as a recording artist, and she’s quickly picking up new fans as the weeks go on. Does she want to let her own music take a backseat while she performs covers of already famous songs on a tight TV schedule? On the other hand, being on the show will definitely propel her into household-name-territory at warp speed, much like it did for Lea Michele and the rest of the Gleeks.

What was once just a rumor is now coming to fruition. Emerging singer Charice officially acknowledged that she’ll be joining the cast of ‘Glee.’ She Tweeted on Monday, “It’s official. I’m on Glee (next season) but story behind it. When d rumor came out, it wasn’t true. But then after that; I tried to audition. And i made it!!! Let’s Party!!!!”

Airing Thursday nights, the musical FOX show has attracted many big name guest stars, including Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris, in its short history.

Taylor Swift, Billy Joel Perform at Songwriters Hall of Fame Ceremony

Award-winning producers, songwriters and performers gathered Thursday night, June 17, in New York, to honor and be honored at the 41st Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The evening included a performance by Taylor Swift, who received the Hal David Starlight Award. Swift performed to a star-studded audience, including Hall of Fame inductees Leonard Cohen and Jackie DeShannon. Kim Carnes, Elizabeth Withers, and Nikki Yanofsky were also in attendance.

Piano man Billy Joel was on hand to induct his producer, Phil Ramone, and to take part in a special ensemble performance that paid tribute to Paul Simon’s classic single “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and also featured Brian Stokes Mitchell, Phil Collins, and Judy Collins.

The 18-year-old Filipina phenom Charice, who looked thrilled and a little overwhelmed, showed up in support of her producer and mentor David Foster, who was being inducted and recognized for a long career of achievements, including 44 Grammy nominations. A native of British Columbia, Foster’s credits include Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart,” as well as the launching careers of artists like Celine Dion and Michael Buble.

Foster has recently revealed to Oprah that he has accepted Charice’s request to be her godfather. “He’s one of the most important people who actually helped me from the very beginning,” Charice told Entertainment Tonight.

Starry, starry night: The honorees at this year’s Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards Gala Thursday night at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel included noted tunesmiths/performers ranging from veterans Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen and Earth Wind & Fire to 20-year-old Taylor Swift.

Multitasking: Inductee David Foster noted that “when I go to the doctor’s office and they ask me to fill in my occupation, I don’t put record executive or producer — I put songwriter. Being a songwriter comes first.” Peter Cetera helped induct the prolific Canadian with a medley of Hard to Say I’m Sorry, You’re the Inspiration and Glory of Love. Foster gave raves to Charice, a petite teen with 10-octave talent, as “the latest great voice to stumble into my world.” She applied her pipes to one of Foster’s many contributions to diva-dom, Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing.
