Pyramid by Charice: Radio Campaign to Boost Airplay and Encourage Sales

The Pyramid pop version has already been released to radio stations across North America and our goal is to get it playing all day, every day on all of your local Top 40 radio stations AND on Internet radio. This is important to build momentum for the song and get the public really buzzin’ about the release of the album.

Radio is one of the MASS MEDIA that record companies use to promote CDs to a wide-spread audience. Few songs sell well at retail without it. None sell millions without it. There are approximately 10,000 commercial stations, and 2,500 non-commercial stations, in the United States and Canada. It’s really a staggering number of outlets, so we decided to narrow down our focus and channel all our energy and resources to Top 40 radio stations.

So Here’s Our Game Plan:

WE NEED YOU to email / call your area radio stations and request Pyramid! As simple as that!

If Charice receives a lot of requests from several people, the radio station will meet the public demand. We have put together the most comprehensive list of Top 40 radio stations to give you a quick and easy way to find all of the stations in your listening areas. Ultimately, our goal is to use the radio airplay to create wide-spread awareness, excitement, anticipation, SELL SELL SELL the digital song and the album, and grow Charice’s fan base here in North America and Internationally.

Radio Request Etiquette: Please Read

Ok, I know you can hardly wait to start calling & emailing but FIRST we need to go over a few rules:

Never ever call a radio station out of your listening area. It will look fake or forced to the radio station and it will do more harm than good . It must, organically, look like a hit.
Please be aware that the station may not be able to get to your request right away but they do make note of requests and requests will certainly impact the station’s playlist.
It’s not a good idea to call the DJs too much or spam their in-box. That could really work against us, so just one call/email a day will be enough… ok, maybe two, like a friendly reminder “hey how come you haven’t played my song yet?” Don’t be obnoxious please, you know what I mean, I hope.
If the stations in your area are already playing Charice’s Pyramid, call the DJs anyway, e-mail and let them know how much you appreciate them, how much you LOVE the song.

A host of stars – including Austin Anderson , television creator Seth MacFarlane, singers Austin Brown, Macy Gray, Charice Pempengco, Nick Cannon, singer and actress KeKe Palmer, actors Booboo Stewart from the Twilight Saga, Eddie Steeples from My Name Is Earl, American Idol host Kara Dioguardi and many more – attended the fourth annual Stars & Strikes Celebrity Bowling and Poker Tournamnet in Studio City on Wednesday.

The event benefited A Place Called Home, a South Central-based charity that provides a safe, home-like environment for thousands of at-risk youths.

“Our fourth annual Stars & Strikes was another great success, and we are truly thankful for all the generous support from our celebrity ambassadors and sponsors, as well as the Los Angeles community,” said Jonathan Zeichner, executive director of A Place Called Home. “Everyone who attended and offered their support for this year’s event not only helped provide financial aid that is so detrimental to our programs success, but also helped show APCH’s kids that there are people in the community who care about their future and want to see them succeed.”

For the past 17 years, APCH has provided a safe haven with creative and educational resources as well as mentoring, tutoring and support services to inner-city, at-risk youth who would otherwise be on the street, tempted by drugs and gangs, and threatened by violence and other adverse situations. Thousands of kids benefit from this safe, home-like environment where they know they can enjoy an after school meal, study, play sports, make music, learn to dance, get mentoring and tutoring services, and just have fun.

Charice Pyramid Music Video Dream Day!

Part One: An ordinary Chaster’s journey to a seat next to the Director’s chair!

My goodness the music video makers start work early! About 6:00 a.m. I started my walk up the alley behind the Orpheum Theatre, in downtown Los Angeles, the “City of Angels”. In the distance I could see that delivery trucks were already being unloaded. Large wind generators were being rustled across the alley. A security staffer casually watched me approach and seemed unconcerned. Maybe it was the black leather manbag I was carrying my camera gear in that suggested I might have a role to play with the production of Charice’s Pyramid Music Video? I witnessed several workers shuttling between their trucks and the theater, some carrying armloads of cables into the theater, while others wheeled large lockers. I remembered Chasters’ speculations that Charice’s Pyramid Music Video would have an Egyptian theme. Chasters on YouTube commented on Charice’s “Unofficial Pyramid Music Video”, wondering outloud if perhaps Charice would be dressed as Cleopatra, or Iyaz as another Pharaoh? Hmmmmm, I wondered what stage props I might spy as I got closer? What was that peculiar looking prop setting in the lot? It looked like an arched Egyptian harp! Could their speculations be accurate?

Slowly proceeding up the freshly washed alley, additional secrets within the music video makers’ trucks were indiscernible to this lolo’s poor eyes. The chill in the morning air suddenly seemed to amplify the crackling of radio communications. My attention was redirected toward the many workers who were now calling for reinforcements. Their mission to lift a large wind generator up the theater’s back steps had not succeeded. Team members discussed options and the order for a mechanical lift was quickly dispatched. The airwaves were resonating with a sense of well managed urgency that would be maintained throughout the day.

I approached a very large, and looking in charge, security staff member who kindly listened to my mild mannered request. He was a veteran of movie set security and he knew right away who I needed to see. He allowed me to chill with him until he saw my proposed contact person come out from one of the many doors of the theater. First contact went well! My information was passed up the chain of command, so, it was time for more waiting. My new security staff friend and I passed the time by swapping a few security stories; I used to work a 2nd job as a security officer. Six twenty a.m. and a young woman flipping pages on a clipboard headed in my direction. I believe she said she was a producer! Questions and answers were politely exchanged and I was told a time to return. My mission was moving in the right direction, but it’s outcome was still very uncertain.

Eight-thirty a.m. and I was back at the appointed place. I wondered if Charice had already been in makeup, or, was she in the wardrobe room selecting outfits that would suit the shoot? What frock did Cleopatra wear… a flowing golden gown? Would our pop princess wear a crown! My speculations ceased when one of the previously familiar faces greeted me and announced my return over the radio. I patiently waited by the door until the producer I spoke with earlier returned. My hazy memory does not allow for a direct quote, but in effect she said, “You can observe from the side of the stage for now”. She escorted me in! Although another clearance for my admittance was still pending, my expectations for the day had already been exceeded.

A familiar tune I had already heard hundreds of times was filling the set with good vibrations! Pyramid! I took a few steps to the right and I’m emotionally blown to bits and pieces! Charice! On stage! Her personal Sennhauser, Swarovsky-crystal-studded microphone sparkled under the stage lights, it’s bright and beautiful reflections were a compliment to the shining-star beauty of Charice in her element! She looked gorgeous! A few minutes later my laser-like gaze upon Charice was powered down as a new face greeted me. A new face, but with a familiar name! More questions and answers were exchanged, then… conditions were given: no filming of the music video, obey all staff commands, no access to the stars, or to the management’s work area, unless previously approved by management and escorted by a staff member. My request for an interview with Charice would be considered, but there would be no guarantees and it would be subject to the ever changing demands of the video shoot. Yes! Woooooohooooo!

I’m told to take any seat I like and I gazed off stage at over 2,000 seats. The balcony booth seats, on either side of the stage, nearly over the stage, looked tempting. But, I selected center stage, five rows back, next to the director. I had an unobstructed stage view and I could listen to the director’s instructions for setting up each shot and observe the digital camera’s view on a large LCD screen right next to me. The events of that morning were already enough for me to say, “This is my Charice Pyramid Music Video Dream Day!” Amazingly, this was just cloud one of a cloud nine Charice Pyramid Music Video Dream Day!

I feel very blessed to have been granted this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, observing Charice’s Pyramid Music Video. Therefore, I choose to interpret the conditions of my admittance there in a way that I hope will convey my highest respect for Charice’s management’s rules/conditions. In Part Two of my observations, I choose to exclude details of the shoot that would reveal the music video’s artistic theme and style. I hope my generalized observations/impressions of the remainder of the day’s events will still be worthwhile reading. Otherwise, I’ve heard reports that the actual music video will be released within two weeks, so you won’t have to wait long to satisfy your curiosity.

Part 2: Lights, Camera, Action, Drama!

Chasters, how I would love to give you a second by second, IMAX, HD, 3D, with digital surround sound recount of my Pyramid Music Video dream day. I wish that my story would allow you to press replay and auto refresh of your favorite “Official Pyramid Music Video” moments, as you have no doubt been doing as you repeatedly view Charice’s “Unofficial Pyramid Music Video”. It pains me to be limited in the scope of this article by my previous commitments to Charice’s management, my limited vocabulary and my limited mental acuity. I realize that the view through censored eyes is seldom satisfactory. So how do I give voice to my heart? How do I share jubilation overflowing with thanksgiving? How do I become the precentor* of Charice’s Choir of Chasters and bring each of you into the ethereal theater; into paradise?

Join me as I sink down into my seat next to the director’s chair and tip my hat down over my raised brows. I glance around the theater and see I’m one of just a few fortunate souls to be witnessing this amazing event. I felt like standing up and shouting, “Labyo Charice!”, but for now I remained content to say it through my soul. The house lights are dim, the director is discussing stage lighting and the proper video framing with his assistants. We are between scenes, but the entertainer in Charice doesn’t let this moment pass without making it memorable. The production crew and audience start to chuckle as Charice begins a spot on chipmunk imitation followed by a cat meow ovation. Charice grins and then flashes a big teenager smile, letting us know that she’s relaxed and having a good time! Charice takes further advantage of the break and launches into some impromptu popping dance moves. She flows her popping motions into some rhythmic waves and then… she’s doing a full old school robot routine! I wanna dance! My arms and neck unconsciously tense in a robotic recall of my younger dancing days.

Lights adjusted, stage reset, camera ready and the director radios the audio tech to cue the music to begin the next shot. Pyramid soon comes on over the sound system, but, it’s in Chipmunk speed! Maybe the sound engineer enjoyed Charice’s Chipmunks imitations a little too much. The director apologizes to Charice and asks the sound engineer to recue the music and asks the amused audience for quiet. Charice is unflappable. Then the glowing red LED frame marker is drawn back from the camera lens once again and we are rolling! It is Diva time! Charice has my head bobbing from her first glamorous gesture. The stage is hers and she owns every inch of it without traveling a step! Bright lights silhouette her petite frame. Charice’s long straight hair dances around her face, blown by opposing winds that compete for a turn to caress her cute and curvaceous cheeks. Windswept white smoke reaches out to meet Charice like the extended hands of her adoring fans. It quickly surrounds her, then swirls upward to form a glowing halo above our angel’s head. Charice’s confident countenance shines like the legendary stars who have graced this same stage: Little Richard, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder to name just a few.

Excerpt: Like Justin Bieber, Charice generated popularity through YouTube, gaining recognition after being featured on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ and ‘Oprah.’ She was even invited to perform a special duet at New York City’s Madison Square Garden with Celine Dion as part of Dion’s Taking Chances Tour. Charice Pempengco first got attention for her big voice on a series of videos posted on YouTube. Hailing from the Phillipines, the singer went on to appear on programs both in her native country and all over the world. She most notably appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show several times. “Pyramid” is her latest single. It’s Pop/R&B-oriented a la Jordin Sparks’ “Tattoo”. It’s charming and cute.

There are remixes for “Pyramid” by Barry Harris, Dave Aude, Jonathan Peters, and Ruff Loaderz. Barry opts for a nice light circuit/house-styled mix. The piano keys and synths are really pretty. Dave’s is much lighter and more discoey than his usual with plenty of pianos as well. Really good. Jonathan’s mix is darker and harder. It feels more like a dub with all the cut up and looped vocals, plus those buildups and drops. It doesn’t have all the vocals. It feels a bit messy and noisy during certain parts. But this may sound better on a club sound system. Ruff Loaderz go in an electro house direction.

Overall, the package is quite good.

Charice Squeaks into Hollywood

Although it was only a vocal cameo, international singing sensation Charice in “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” has people pointing their thumbs way up on her performance.

“Very happy po ako na some people are tweeting me na nakita po nila ako sa movie,” the young Pinay singer said in an interview.

“I’m very happy that some people are tweeting me that they saw me in the movie,” the young Pinay singer said in an interview.

In the animated film, Charice stars as herself — and she’s Alvin, Theodore, and Simon’s biggest rival in a singing competition.

Charice recorded two songs for the movie: a version of Alicia Keys’ “No One” with the Chipettes, and the finale number, “Shake Your Booty.”

The 17-year-old shared how she landed in her first Hollywood movie: “I auditioned for the role in the normal way, with no backer, [and] not because I am close to Oprah [Winfrey],” she related in another interview.

“I auditioned for it and sang two songs, [and] read script. They asked me to do the three voices of the chipmunks.”

She got the role apparently because she touched the heart of the film director, Betty Thomas.

Charice recalled the director telling her: “You know what, I saw you in ‘Oprah.’”

“And she said that she could relate to the story of my life. That was why she told her staff that ‘I need this girl on my movie.’”

Asked if she is open for more acting gigs in the future, the singer Oprah dubbed “Most Talented Girl in the World” beamed with a big “Yes!”

“Talaga pong nagustuhan ko po ang acting. Pero ‘yong sa ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks,’ hindi pa po siya acting pero sabi ko chance ko na po ‘yon. Kasi po, siyempre, nagpakita po ‘ko ng singing skills ko. Siyempre gusto ko na ipakita ‘yong acting skills ko naman,” she enthused.

Yes, I really began to like acting. I’m not acting there in ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks,’ but it’s a chance to open doors perhaps. Because now that they have seen my singing skills, of course I’d like them to see my acting skills too,” she enthused.

“Squeakquel,” which is set to be screened in the Philippines this month, outshone other kid-oriented pictures shown around the same time in the box-office. The competition included the Charles Dickens classic tale, “A Christmas Carol,” and Disney’s 2-D relapse, “The Princess and the Frog.”

“Squeakquel” currently ranks third in the world box-office after raking in sales of $36.6 million.

Meanwhile, the “Squeakquel” soundtrack (which includes Charice’s song) peaked at number 20 in the Billboard 200 chart and at number three at the Billboard soundtracks chart.

Charice Shines as Guest in Chipmunks Movie

You will be surprised how Charice has grown when you see Alvin and the Chipmunks 2, her first Hollywood movie, which is opening nationwide on Friday, Jan. 8.

The movie was shot early last year and Charice looks like the probinsyana lass she used to be. Cute! Since then, she has been “reinvented” and she now looks as sophisticated (well, almost!) as any international teen pop star.

She’s only a “guest” in the movie but she shines in her few-minutes exposure while singing the Alicia Keys
hit No One in a scene showing a campus singing contest. Charice sings three-fourths of the song and is given her “moment.”

In the movie, Chipmunks Alvin (voiced by Justin Long), Simon (by Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (by Jesse McCartney) meet their match as the latest singing group, The Chipettes, take center stage.

Congratulations to Operation Smile for winning the first place prize of $20,000 in the PayPal Fruitcake Campaign! Many thanks go out to all the Chasters for your unwavering support throughout the evening as we maintained our lead. You definitely heeded our call for help (below) and rose to the occasion.

Indeed, throughout the past three weeks, Chasters have given tremendous support by their donations and regiftings, which have paid off handsomely for Operation Smile with total winnings of $20,000 for the Grand Prize, $3,000 from the weekly #CharityTuesday winnings, and $12,360 in total donations raised. I’d say that’s not a bad payoff at all for just three weeks of work.

In fact, Charice had just been named Operation Smile’s newest and youngest Smile Ambassador on December 12, 2009, just 3 weeks earlier. She immediately rallied the chasters LIVE ON blogTV that very same night to ask for our support on the Fruitcake Campaign which was already underway into the third week of the contest. So here we are, New Year’s Eve, celebrating well-deserved winnings and donations totalling $35,000 just as the clock strikes midnight! What a wonderful way to start the new year, to portend greater things to come perhaps in 2010.

Urgent Help Needed in Next Few Hours to Win $20,000 in the Fruitcake Campaign

We need your urgent help to maintain the lead for the Fruitcake campaign. Charice’s fruitcake is now in Second Place for total individual points (due to a +$5000 surge today alone by Architects for Humanity) so we want to be sure that we win this contest for TOTAL CUMULATIVE points and win the big $20,000 prize money. The contest ends tonight at midnight in just a few more hours.

Here’s what you can do to help to maximize points according to the Contest Rules…

Please make a donation in $5 increments to a new and different fruitcake (other than Charice’s) to earn 75 bonus points. Your $20 donation is worth 600 points if you donate to 4 different and unique fruitcakes (see example below). A “unique” fruitcake is defined as a fruitcake that you have not already donated to; otherwise you do not get the 75 bonus points. The minimum donation to earn points is $5, hence 4 different fruitcakes.

If just 10 people donate $20 to 4 different fruitcakes, that will be worth 6000 points.

For example:
$5 to Charicemania’s fruitcake x 15 points per dollar = 75 points + 75 bonus points = 150 pts
$5 to Noellen’s fruitcake x 15 points per dollar = 75 points + 75 bonus points = 150 pts
$5 to “Madz’s fruitcake x 15 points per dollar = 75 points + 75 bonus points = 150

Any Operation Smile fruitcake will do. Just scroll down the fruitcake screen and click an Operation Smile fruitcake (if you need a unique fruitcake to donate to and/or regift).

SECONDLY, create a fruitcake of your own for 50 additional points, if you haven’t done so already. You don’t need to donate to it, just creating it is sufficient for the 50 points. There is a “Make a Fruitcake” icon at the top of the Fruitcake page… just follow instructions from there. 50 easy points is a lot faster and easier than Regifting.

THIRDLY, Regift the Fruitcake. This is worth 1 point for every friend you regift to and is time-intensive, but a point is a point. Again, however, you have to regift to a unique friend. You do not get a point by regifting the same fruitcake over and over again. So please just pick a DIFFERENT Operation Smile fruitcake or ALL of them to regift that fruitcake to each of your friends. Come-from-behind Rally to Win the 3rd #CharityTuesday

It was sooo exciting in the Chatbox last night as Chasters rallied to come from behind to win the 3rd and final #CharityTuesday for yet another $1,000 bonus to be awarded to Operation Smile.

Congratulations especially to BlueBird for contributing the bulk of the $880 needed to overtake the all-day leader (now second place finisher) in the last photo-finish 30 minutes of the contest. Chasters cheered each other on and put their money where their mouth is by rallying to raise the funds needed and win it! I’m so proud to be a Chaster right now, it’s truly amazing to have witnessed it, not to mention heart-stopping, suspenseful, and oh so exciting.

At 11:30pm, Operation Smile was in second place with $2,280 raised versus the leader at $2,750. Some of us had already thrown in the towel, ready to take the second place prize. But BlueBird rallied Chasters in the chatbox to raise $880 at literally the eleventh hour, contributing $500 of her own money, and winning it for Charice and Operation Smile!

For the third consecutive week, our dedicated, loyal Chasters community came together in a tremendous show of support for Charice in her role as International Youth Ambassador for Operation Smile. Did I say, IT WAS AMAZING! Other talk-show hosts can make people famous, but sometimes only Oprah can make them stars. After producers of The Ellen DeGeneres Show saw a YouTube clip of the then 16-year old Charice Pempengco singing the Dreamgirls anthem “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” they flew her in from her native Philippines to perform. With Web clips of her concerts already a viral hit in Asia, Pempengco found herself on Oprah a few months later, where her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” brought audience members to tears. That’s when the magic started: Oprah introduced the teenager to record producer David Foster, who helped put together her first U.S. single, “Note to God”; it debuted in May on the Billboard Top 50. Foster also added the starlet to the cast of his PBS special, Hitman: David Foster & Friends, alongside singers like Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion.

Pempengco, whom Oprah has dubbed the most talented girl in the world, will also play herself in next year’s Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel.

LOS ANGELES—As the 60-member strong Filipino-American Symphony Orchestra (Faso) played pieces from Lucio San Pedro to Levi Celerio last Sunday evening at the historic Pasadena Civic Auditorium, the thought hit us—that something so beautiful, positive and Filipino continues to exist in the US.

When Faso made its historic debut as the first Filipino symphony orchestra outside the Philippines last May 17 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, we frankly had doubts about its continued existence. We were proud of Faso, yes, but our enthusiasm was tempered by the ningas cogon mentality that is responsible for the flash-then-fizzle fate of many Fil-Am projects.

So, to see and listen to the orchestra, led by musical director, Robert “Bob” Shroder, playing in its second concert at a grander venue, the 77-year-old Pasadena Civic Auditorium, was almost like watching a miracle unfold. While many orchestras in the US and around the world are going bankrupt, downsizing or folding up, here’s a Filipino symphony orchestra that bowed during one of the worst economic downturns in history returning to the stage. We’re still reeling from the financial crisis, but last Dec. 6, in the concert titled “Handog ng Faso sa Pasko,” the orchestra was up there in a revered performance hall, bathed in bright lights and playing with brio.

Significance
We almost felt like nudging everyone and saying, do we all realize the significance of this evening; that a huge Fil-Am undertaking like this, is actually happening before our very eyes and ears? What was even more remarkable was that this was a community-based volunteer-member orchestra composed of Fil-Ams of various ages and backgrounds, from students to professionals, who rehearse for a few hours once a week. Most of them, including Bob, hold daytime jobs. Each orchestra member has an interesting story on how he juggles rehearsals and the demands of his daily existence in America. Everyone makes sacrifices to be able to play in the orchestra.

Also worth noting is that Faso is less than two years old, having begun as an idea from a back porch conversation between Asian Journal’s Roger Oriel and Lito Ocampo Cruz. When a question posed by Lito, “Is there a Filipino symphony orchestra in the US?” generated a “No” from Roger, the two, along with a core group composed of Bob, Cora Oriel, Andy Tecson and Angelito Molina, quickly went into action. That was just in May 2008.

The enthusiastic applause that greeted the end of each of Faso’s pieces at the concert was therefore well earned. Running parallel to the group’s growing success is that of soprano, Maria Christina “Kit” Navarro, who was heard by many people for the first time in the orchestra’s debut concert. The audience adored Kit and wondered who she was and where she had been hiding all this time. In her second outing with Faso, Bob generously let the spotlight shine on the supremely talented Kit. The move paid off excellently. Some of the evening’s best numbers came when the soprano and the orchestra performed together: “Queen of the Night,” “O Holy Night” and “Sa Kabukiran.”

We savored the thought that a classical soprano like Kit was vigorously applauded by an audience that went wild when Charice came onstage. But, first, Bob’s sense of humor prevailed. He launched the orchestra into the opening strains of “I Have Nothing,” the Whitney Houston hit that has also become an anthem of sorts for the teenage singing sensation. The crowd got excited. Then, Bob stopped the orchestra and mischievously asked, “Do you want me to sing the song?—Please, say no!” Then, he again launched into the familiar intro of “I Have Nothing”—and, this time, Charice strode onstage.

We have to admit that it was our first time to hear Charice in a live-concert setting. She was a powerful and confident singer. The concert whetted our interest to hear her in a show where she sings her own material.

“The Prayer” has been butchered and sung to death, but since Charice performed it with Christopher “Pete” Avendaño, a tenor who, like Kit, got a well-deserved break in Faso’s maiden concert, we opened our ears. Pete was a good match to Charice’s commanding pipes. The duo moved many in the house to tears.

We are glad that, in Faso’s concerts, talents like Pete and Kit get opportunities to shine. Two promising young singers, Isabella “Bella” Ramos and Joanne Marie Villanueva, also sang a medley of Filipino lullabies (“Sa Ugoy ng Duyan,” “Ili-Ili Tulog Anay”).

Harmony
Another special guest, Joey Albert, sang “Pasko Na, Sinta Ko” and “Kumukutikutitap.” A sentiment heard several times from the audience members was that the concert’s repertoire, especially Joey’s “Pasko Na…,” made them long to go home for the holidays. The music, from Mozart, Handel, Rutter, Felipe Padilla de Leon and Ryan Cayabyab, also inspired a spirit of harmony among the crowd.

Two adult choirs, the Philippine Chamber Singers-Los Angeles (under the artistic direction of Gelo Francisco, who joined Charice in one song and the other vocalists in the finale) and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Choir (with Pete as music director), plus three children’s choirs from Catholic schools, Our Lady of Loretto, Immaculate Heart of Mary and Blessed Sacrament, and one church, Immaculate Heart of Mary, added vocal grandeur to the holiday tunes. The arrangements of those Christmas classics, by Ryan Cayabyab, Louie Ramos and Restie de la Cruz, were acknowledged by Bob.

Talks are now underway for a third concert. For an orchestra that began as a simple idea hatched in a back porch conversation, Faso is doing spectacularly well, indeed.

The magazine’s inception was in 1992 and has become a nationally-distributed magazine that serves Filipinos in the United States. It covers many aspects of the Filipino diaspora, particularly on Philippine heroes, leaders and achievers, culture, history, travel, food and entertainment.

The Nightingale Sings

The kindness of strangers. This is how the 16-year old singing phenomenon Charice Pempengco explains her meteoric rise to stardom. It was a stranger who uploaded videos of her singing on YouTube. Those videos caught the attention of Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey—both strangers to her—and before she knew it, she was on her way to the U.S. to appear on their shows. The rest, as they say, is history.

Charice’s guest appearances on both shows opened doors for her, paving the way for music legends David Foster, Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion to take the petite Filipina under their wings. With such pedigreed support, stardom came quickly, so quickly that Charice (who now uses only her first name) admits that she still gets goosebumps whenever she thinks about how it happened.

Born and raised in San Pedro, Laguna, by a single mother, Charice got her big break when in 2007, one of her fans named FalseVoice (real name Dave Duenas) posted on YouTube without her knowledge, her renditions in “Little Big Star,” a TV talent show in Manila, of “I Will Always Love You” (by Whitney Houston) and “And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going” (from “Dreamgirls”).

The videos garnered at least 13 million hits from Internet users worldwide. Sweden was the first to take notice, when the Stockholm-based music publishing company, Ten Songs/Productions, offered Charice her first recording contract. The first major TV network response came from South Korea when Seoul’s local TV talent show “Star King” invited Charice to appear. The U.K. followed suit in spring 2008 when London’s celebrated TV host Paul O’Grady asked Charice to guest in one of his shows.

As her Internet audience quickly grew at a staggering pace, Charice-mania also hit the U.S. with her guest appearances in the Ellen and Oprah shows. On Oprah’s prodding, the 15-time Grammy-winning music producer David Foster agreed to sign Cha-rice to his recording production 143/ Reprise Records. “Who could resist the Little O?” Foster jokes every time he appears with Charice on the TV talk show circuit.

In the spring of 2008, Foster invited Charice to perform on his “David Foster and Friends” show at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, alongside such big-name stars as world-famous Italian tenor, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, among others. Charice’s performance at Foster’s tribute concert became her debut performance on the international concert stage. She got two standing ovations (the show was broadcast on PBS).

The following summer, Charice performed a song with Bocelli titled “The Prayer” in his hometown of Tuscany, Italy. That fall, she performed a duet, “Because You Loved Me,” with Celine Dion at her Madison Square Garden show in New York City. Charice’s performance got rave reviews in the New York Post and the New York Times.

Her first internationally released single “Note to God,” written by Grammy awardee Diane Warren and produced by David Foster, became an instant Top 10 hit on iTunes.

“I don’t know if fate has designed it so. But my own Cinderella story is wrapped around the lesson my mother, Raquel kept repeating to me since I was little: that it is through our own generosity as neighbors that others are helped, and when given a chance to do an act of kindness, no matter how insignificant, one should take that chance because kindness brings happiness and good fortune to others,” Charice relates. “I took that lesson to heart.”

Charity Work
True to her word, Charice visited Miami, Florida last October 16 to help raise funds for the Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH).

“I’m happy and humbled to be a part of the MCH Foundation’s efforts to raise money to ensure that all children have access to the best care available in the nation,” she declared. “What makes this undertaking more significant for me is its timing of giving me the chance to stand true to and put into deeds the spirit of my just recently released first international single “Note to God.” She then went on to purr the lyrics: “…wish for wisdom to let compassion rule this world, …put some tenderness in our hearts, …and find love cuz love is overdue.” “You know what, my song has become part of my prayer every night before I go to bed,” she relates.

Founded in 1950, MCH is a 289-bed freestanding state-of-the-art facility re-nowned for its excellence in all aspects of pediatric medicine. With a medical staff of more than 650 physicians and over 2,000 employees, MCH offers more than 40 pediatric specialties and subspecialties. Its pediatric teaching and residency program is the largest in the Southeastern U.S. MCH has at least 50 Filipino nurses on its payroll.

Three of MCH’s specialty-programs— cardiology/cardiovascular surgery, neonatology and neurology/neurosurgery—are ranked among the best in the world, according to a survey conducted by the U.S. News & World Report.

It was in MCH that the world’s first non-surgical tricuspid heart valve replacement, endoscopic ventricular thrombectomy, and extracardiac Fontan operation that did not require cardiopulmonary bypass, were performed in separate operations.

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of MCH’s Brain Institute is world-renowned in treating medically resistant epileptic seizures. Take the case of Melanie Lawrence of Leesburg, Georgia. She was only three years old when she began having relentless seizures as many as forty times a day. Melanie was brought to MCH where its team of neuro-surgeons succeeded in identifying the mysterious source of Melanie’s seizures through the use of SPECT scans, a technology that few facilities employ. A surgery on her was performed in which a significant portion of her malfunctioning right frontal lobe was re-moved. Little Melanie, now 5, is a bright, confident kindergartner who loves to read.

Children are especially close to Charice’s heart. When she started earning money, she began to sponsor the education of seven children through World Vision Philippines. She also supports Bantay Bata (Child Watch), a nonprofit that provides social services to disadvantaged and at-risk children, one of which is the setting up of the national emergency hotline, ‘163,’ which allows people to call in and report incidences of child abuse, exploitation and neglect.

“I lost a little brother to heart disease; he lived only for five days,” relates Charice. “That was a very depressing time for our family and it took my mother time to recover from the sadness of losing him.”

She continues: “Children are helpless. They need to be taken cared of. So when I got a call from the MCH Foundation to perform at their ball and concert to benefit their patients, it didn’t take me a second to decide and accept the invitation. My little brother’s death always gives me that sense of wanting to help children who are helpless like him.”

For all that she has accomplished in the music world at a very young age, Charice is an inspiration to millions of Filipinos who left the Philippines and their families to work abroad. She’s proud to identify herself as one of them.

“Make no mistake, I’m no different from our OFWs (overseas Filipino workers). They left the Philippines to sell to foreign employers their skills, know-how, and talents. I left the country for exactly the same reason which is to sell to people the gift that God so kindly endowed me—my voice,” Charice asserts.

Her audience of MCH benefactors, which included Miami celebrities such as Gabrielle Union, Coach Pat Riley, Alonzo Mourning, and Dwayne Wade, were so mesmerized with her stunning performance at the historic 1920s-built Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida—the perennial venue of the annual summits of the heads of states of Central, North and South Americas and the Caribbean.

She left her heart, however, in the wards of MCH where kids—some almost her age—are battling serious ailments.

“I want to let the kids at the hospital know that wherever I go, I will always share with them one other lifeline, more important that anything else—my prayers. I’m sure to include them in my prayers every night before I go to bed. We all must not forget that God is always the best doctor and the best medicine.”
