This was posted last February 5th, with a short description saying “Hello everyone in Japan!  I’m back after having been gone for a while.”  It’s a little dark, but we’re not complaining.  It shows Charice at the Warner Japan office wearing a hat which she usually does when she is in Japan.

Another picture was posted the next day, February 6th, showing Charice with a bamboo stick!  What’s in it Cha?  They usually put steamed rice in bamboo but the caption says “Enjoying dinner at a Japanese restaurant after a staff meeting…Also drank sake (Japanese wine) since I’m already 20 years old.” (Note: The legal age in Japan is 20.)  Sake in bamboo sounds good!

This last picture was also posted but has been erased.  Luckily we have super fast “nin-chas”  who managed to save the picture.

So what do you think she is up to?  Will it be another album?  A concert?  Whatever it is, we can’t wait!

On its recent episode which was aired on Dec. 2, Charice sits down with CNN Correspondent Anna Coren in an all tell and in- depth interview about her phenomenal rise to fame, how she overcame a tough childhood life in the Philippines before having a big break in Hollywood and how it changed her life.

“Well it was really a tough life, not really simple. My mom’s a single mom and she used to be my vocal coach and I really admire her. She’s beyond doubt my inspiration and I look up to her a lot. I mean I chose to be a singer because of her. It was a tough life before but now this whole thing that happened to me really helped me a lot.”

“By the age of six I was cooking rice and some stuff for my small brother. I was giving him the milk and all…Every time I did all the singing contests and it was horrible. You start from 10pm in the night and you end at 7am in the daylight and I had to go to school. She used to weep and she told me to stop and I said “no” because that was the only way we could get a lot of money from it. I really sacrificed all but at the same time it felt fantastic and it was worth it. Seeing my mom’s face every time I won made me feel fantastic. ”

Filmed several weeks before her estranged Father’s tragic death, an emotional Charice tells Anna Coren about her relationship with her late dad. When asked if she misses her father, Charice (in tears) answered, that she at some point do still miss having a dad.

“I really don’t know. I don’t know. Maybe now and again when I see some kids with their families. Sorry I keep crying. Maybe when I question them now and again, how does it feel to have a dad? And you know they tell me these fantastic answers and now and again I wish my dad is here. Maybe I do, now and again. But at the same time, I don’t because of what happened. It’s hard. It’s really hard.”

Web Town Triangle, October 2011

Charice was featured in the Artist Interview section of the October 2011 issue of Web Town Triangle, a webzine/magazine aimed at residents of Yamaguchi Prefecture in Japan.   This is an interesting interview, with tidbits that might even surprise long-time Chasters.  Read on and find out where Charice also wants to live, what she was doing at 5 years old, and where she shops when she is in Japan.

You’ve joined a lot of singing contests since you were young right?

“Yes. When I was 4 years old, I was singing in my house and my mother realized that I had a talent in singing so I started joining singing contests when I was 7.”

What made you want to become an artist?

“I didn’t think that I would become an artist just because singing came naturally to me. I became an artist with the natural flow of things, over time. But when I was in elementary school and was joining singing contests, I did imagine that I would be a singer. I was supporting my family through my singing but at the same time I was having a lot of fun. I am grateful that I did become a singer.”

You know, Japanese elementary students don’t have clear-cut goals at their age like you did.

“Maybe I just grew up faster than everyone else. I was cooking even before I entered elementary school.”

You were cooking at 5,6 years old?

“In our house, my mother worked out of the home until very late. I have a younger brother, and I remember cooking so that I could feed him. I was short and I couldn’t reach the stove so I had to step on a stool and cook. I cooked all the time so I was used to it.”

You are now performing world-wide – did you ever think of performing around the world when you thought of becoming a singer?

“Not at all (laughs). I did want to become famous in the Philippines but I never thought that I would be able to sing for the whole world. I became more known because of Youtube, so Youtube was a good match for me.”

You are from the Philippines but are you still based there?

“I come and go between the Philippines and America now. I also go on tour and do promotion work in other countries, just like I am doing in Japan now (laughs).”

Were you able to speak English when you were still living in the Philippines?

“I wasn’t able to speak English when I was there. Even in the Philippines, English is a second language. I learned English when I came to America when I was 15. I watched a lot of American movies and television to learn English.”

You have a powerful singing voice that has mesmerized the world. How do you take care of your voice?

“Arigato gozaimasu. I don’t really do anything special to “take care” of it. But if I have to give an example, it would be taking a break. That’s basically all I do.”

Was there ever a time when you were in a slump, when you felt discouraged?

“When I was 13, I joined a major singing contest (on TV) and I really gave it my all because I wanted to show everyone that I would win. But in the end, I only placed third. I was really, really frustrated. I wouldn’t leave the house and just kept crying. I thought of giving up becoming a singer. My mother told me that there will be times like this but there will definitely be good times. With her positive attitude and the comfort that she gave me, I was able to recover. Even up to know, I can still remember how frustrated I was.”

What books or movies have shaped you, influenced you?

“One Piece” (animation). And Doraemon. (My brother) and I were by ourselves a lot since out mother was working until late in the evening so we watched animation. I received Doraemon comin books the other day. I would like to read them. I also watched other Japanese animation. There were quite a few but I don’t remember the titles…”

In your travels, what places do you like?

“I love Japan. I think this is my sixth time to Japan. All of the Japanese are kind and polite. And the food is delicious – sushi, shabu shabu, rice balls. I also like Tennessee in America. I went there for a private event and it was so nice I wanted to live there. The place where went had a big pond and the sky was endless. Everything was big and wide and there were hardly any people. The view was pretty and the air was clean. Time moved slowly and I was able to relax and have fun.”

What have you bought lately?

“This one (the navy jacket and cream shirt that she was wearing). I bought it in Zara here in Japan. I enjoy shopping in Zara here because there are a lot of clothes that they sell here that they do not have in America.”

You have a small build so Japanese sizes are just right for you?

“Yes! All the sizes in America are larger so a lot of things are too big for me. Japan has a lot of small clothes so it’s just right for me. That’s the main reason why I buy a lot of clothes here. I also bought this in Japan (pointing to a yellow watch). I definitely go shopping when I am here.”

Don’t people crowd around you when you shopping here in Japan?

“I never get recognized here. Even in America people don’t notice me. When I sing, people do recognize that it’s me but generally I don’t get recognized so it’s easy to shop.”

Lastly, a message please.

“I am so happy that people in Japan listen to my music. The song “Far as the Sky” which is in my new album is the theme song of the drama “Bull Doctor” so I think the song is familiar to everyone. This album is different from my first album. It’s a mix of different genres which you will enjoy so please listen to it.”

Having been acknowledged and strongly-supported by the multi-Grammy winner David Foster, who has been best known as a producer for Celine Dion and many other recording stars, the charming starlet Charice recently came back to Japan for promoting her upcoming second album. Having won huge popularity among a wide range of TV viewers who have enjoyed “GLEE” in which she starred as a semi-regular cast.

On this issue, Screen gives you the truely charming face of Charice, and how charming a personality Charice has with an exclusive interview.

First having lit the fire of sensation from YouTube, now a worldwide sensation, Charice has become. Acknowledged by David Foster with her stunningly beautiful gifted voice, and with his guidance, Charice has been one of the “friends” of David Foster & Friends concert gala series since 2008 and is performing with him again as a part of David Foster & Friends Japan Tour 2011 which will be held on October 19 & 20.

The young starlet who has recently contributed her voice for the Japanese TV drama “The Bull Doctor” recently came back to Japan to promote her soon-to-come sophomore international album. Here you are witnessing the positive, energetically happy girl who kindly responded to our questions below.

You have now been very famous around the world. How do you feel becoming so watched from millions and millions of people?

“I have come to right where I am now because of the support from many many people around the world and of course, many fans out there have supported me that has brought me up right here. I am so grateful for having been able to experience so many of the unimaginables, and I feel so blessed about it.”

Your new abum “Infinity”, has full of tracks which maintains a variety for each tracks to set the rainbowsome colorful tone for the album. Any tracks you especially love or put passions into?

“Definitely “Bounce Back”. The song is about “to get my own back on”. It’s about a girl who put those people to shame who were so hard on and being haters of her (Laugh). Another song “Lighthouse” is an acoustic kind of a song as it was set up to be and that I so love about it. For another song “New World”, is a theme song for a new Final Fantasy game, and has a hopeful message that is, even if you lose your profoundly loving precious someone, those beautiful memories you created with will live on…never fade away.”

You also starred the worldwide famous TV series “GLEE” and contributed your beautiful voice for a couple of episodes.

“I love GLEE! And I do love to go back to GLEE again! By the way, you see? This hat I wore today which is just like the one I wore as Sunshine on Glee (Laugh)”

Yes I knew that! That’s so cute Is there any points and tips for the “Charice a ala mode”, your style?

“Well, I think Heels that makes me look taller is essential, and any black outfits that would make me look more slim (Laugh) I would also go with a mens shirt on like a rich dress kinda style plus leggings on…i love that too.”

Any future acting plans for you?

“I just finished filming an action comedy film “Here comes the boom” which is going to be in theaters in the United States next July. I played a high school student who is a stunning genius, and of course there are a few cuts in the film that I sing.”

Last question for you. Any advice you can give to those who wants to be like you, I mean people who dreams and wants to follow your success?

“Be strong, and never give up! Believe in yourself, don’t get caught by anyone who give you negative stuffs and feelings!…well that sounds like a winner’s speech at the Oscars doesn’t it?! (Laugh)”

“Bull Doctor” is a mystery/crime drama starring two famous Japanese actresses, Esumi Makiko and Ishihara Satomi. They play a forensic scientist and a police detective, respectively. These two characters are always in conflict because of their different methods and beliefs on solving crime. The scriptwriter for the show, Hashibe Atsuko, revealed that “Bull Doctor” is based on numerous real life stories.

Though this is Charice’s first time to record an original song for a Japanese series, she has already lent her voice to “Happy Christmas (War is Over)” by John Lennon for J-Wave’s winter programming theme song. Her latest single, “Louder”, was also used by the Japanese morning show “Mezmashi TV” as a theme song.

The producer of “Bull Doctor”, Kayuza Toda, has specifically chosen Charice to sing its theme song titled, “Far as the Sky”. All because her powerful and unique voice amazed him when he first heard her sing. Below is Toda’s praise for Charice as translated by Harry Yasu Clark from Warner Japan’s official website:

“It was shocking when I first heard Charice’s songs. I was so fascinated by her voice which is so stretching and powerful, and the experience got me reaching out to her and asking for a song. I have this strong confidence and conviction in my heart that the message of humanism this drama will give, and the emotions that Charice will bring to this drama, will make a fantastic collaboration.”

Charice happily accepted the offer to sing “Far as the Sky”, and she only has great things to say about the song – which was a group effort from songwriter Seiji Hiratoko, composer Yusuke Tanaka, and song arranger Akimitsu Honma. Charice’s statement below is translated from Japanese (as posted on Warner Japan’s website) to English by Harry Clark:

This song has full of inspiration, tensions to attractions…it has a clear message that even when you tend to get down by encountering obstacles, difficulties in life, there IS always hope.

Please think of this song, as it’s for your loving family, friends, and all the people you dearly love. This song will send people a lot of inspiration so I’d like to have as many people as possible to listen to this song. And, just like it was from me, the song will send you a lot of sympathies too. And, I would like to dedicate this song to all of the Japanese people.

My heart is breaking and aching because of the devastatingly disastrous event that has happened to Japan last March 11. And because of that, I want to dedicate this song to the Japanese people. Please remember to feel that this is not the end of the world, there is still hope, and there will come a “tomorrow”. You all can overcome this, and win this. And please remember we each have given all of our support for you.

Hopefully, the numerous Chasters in Japan will post a video of the opening or closing credits for “Bull Doctor”, which should feature “Far as the Sky”. Her straightforward rendition of the anthem was similar to her previous version during the high-profile 2010 presidential inauguration. It was in that previous performance that legendary Philippine composer Ryan Cayabyab taught her the original tempo. Since the Philippine anthem was originally used as a marching tune by the country’s heroes and soldiers, it’s time signature is in 4/4 and should sound fast and never prolonged like a slow ballad. Charice also refrained from adding vocal embellishments that were done by previous singers – this showed great control as she is also known for her wide vocal range and belting style of singing.

Charice’s simple but heartfelt rendition of “Lupang Hinirang” was matched by her modern white dress, effortless makeup and sleek, straight hair. Another thing that surely made a mark on the viewers was her beautiful smile at the end of the song which showed a mix of happiness, relief and sincerity. It showed how young Charice is compared to the previous artists who sang the various country anthems in high-profile matches like that. Achieving a flawless and powerful delivery of the “Lupang Hinirang” in front a huge audience filled with high-ranking people and celebrities is indeed a great accomplishment, especially for the only 18 year old Charice.

Despite having a busy schedule, Charice dropped everything just to perform in the Pacquiao-Mosley fight. That decision really paid off as the exposure she will get from here is very different from the usual shows she attends, as the people watching all over the world are a mix of diverse gender, age, and culture. Add to this the VIPs in the audience like Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, Paris Hilton, Jamie Foxx, Laila Ali, and Mike Tyson, and it’s a show no performer can resist.

With Pacquiao emerging as the winner, his post-fight party at the Mandalay Bay is on for sure. There, Pacquiao will be singing for his fans and celebrating his win. A highlight of the party will be his performance of “Sometimes When We Touch”, together with Dan Hill, the singer/songwriter of that 1977 hit. Music is a great stress-reliever for Pacquiao, and he enjoys both singing and listening. It will be no surprise if Charice spends a few hours celebrating at the party, as Arnel Pineda, as the chosen national anthem singer. Charice could definitely do some fun duets with Pacquiao – that would definitely be entertaining.

With all of the excitement surrounding the 18-year-old sensation in the US and her hugely successful solo concert tour in Japan earlier this year, it’s worth reminding ourselves of just how big an impression the teenage diva has made in every country she has appeared in.

Thailand, of course, is one of the Asian countries that has embraced her with fervor, with her album “Charice” attaining gold status in November, and a string of TV shows featuring the Laguna-born songstress over the course of the last 12 months.

In July last year, she travelled to Bangkok for the first time to promote her album, winning plaudits after a performance in front of an estimated capacity crowd of 6,000 in the Siam Discovery mall.

In October, she returned for her second public performance as part of the David Foster and Friends Tour, singing in front of an audience of 12,000. She performed for a third time in December, though this time at a private party celebrating the centenary of the Siam Commercial Bank.

The magazine article ends by reiterating the belief that Charice has further to go and is one to keep an eye on, even if her success to date is already remarkable in it’s own right.

“That Charice created quite a stir in the international music industry is probably an understatement, given her continuing rapid zoom to success,” it states.

“It is probably still too soon to tell if this girl with the sonic boom voice with a certified large worldwide following has the lasting power that all true superstars possess. ‘I still have a long way to go,’ Charice said in an interview in Bangkok.  But isn’t that all the more reason to keep watching her?”

As an added element to the feature, EXL also carries an interview with a true Thai Chaster called Jangy in a piece titled “A Thai Chaster Speaks Out.” Jangy, who is described as an entrepreneur, saw Charice both times she performed publicly in Bangkok and answers a variety of different questions.

“Charice is the most down to earth celebrity I’ve ever met. She is always nice and so humble with her fans. I’ve never seen her get tired to greet her fans or sign autographs or take pictures with them,” she says, adding that her playful side helps to make everyone at ease around her, despite her stardom.

“She always makes everyone feel like they’re all special, so this is one of the reasons why I love her so much.”
