Lea Michele hits the Santa Monica Pier, talks about Britney Spears and Charice

FOX threw a press party at the Santa Monica Pier last night (Aug. 2) where GLEE star Lea Michele stopped to talk about what’s coming up for her character, Rachel Berry, in season 2.

In addition to teasing that she’ll be singing what she calls one of Britney Spears’ “iconic” songs, she gave us her thoughts on her Rachel’s new nemesis, which will be played by the Oprah Winfrey-discovered songstress, Charice.

“She and I filmed a hilarious scene the other day and she is the teeniest, most wee person I have ever seen in my life and she is so darling and she’s so sweet,” said Michele. “She has a gorgeous voice.

Michele warns, however, that calling Charice’s GLEE character a “rival” for Rachel isn’t the most accurate description:

“I mean, she is going to be a rival in a sense, but I don’t think [ Executive Producer Ryan Murphy] would do anything as [cliche as that]. You know, knowing Ryan, he’ll probably make us become best friends or something.”

Truth be told, though, a catfight is not out of the question.

Fan Talk Exclusive Interview: Drew Ryan Scott on Collaboration with Charice

Drew Scott was born in Lafayette, LA. He is a member of the boy band “Varsity Fanclub” with four other members known as — Bobby Edner, Jayk Purdy, Thomas Carter, and David Lei Brandt. Drew Ryan is the group’s main songwriter, having co-written the tracks “Ghost,” “Looking for Love,” and “Complicated Girl” on VFC’s debut.

The son of an Elvis impersonator, Drew is also a fan of the Beach Boys “for their amazing harmonies.” Drew also sang all of the songs, on the Disney channel Original movie ‘StarStruck’, apart from one song also named ‘StarStruck’, where he only sang back-up vocals to Sterling Knight.

Charice’s Japan debut album to be released July 7th, features duet with Drew Ryan Scott on the song “I did it for you.”

This young lady can definitely sing. That’s the first impression that hits home as you listen to the 18-year-old Filipino sensation–and Oprah Winfrey fave–belt her heart out. Charice is making waves with catchy dance-pop single “Pyramid” (featuring fellow newcomer Iyaz), and also in that vein on her self-titled debut are noteworthy pop tracks “Reset,” “Nobody’s Singin’ to Me” and “Nothing,” whose vocal arrangements deftly showcase Charice’s formidable chops.

The big-voiced singer calls to mind a younger version of Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion on soaring ballads about love and life, notably “In This Song” and “Note to God.” But the set’s stylistic shifts–from teen-oriented pop to a touch of rock (”In Love So Deep”) to anthemic ballads–ultimately leaves you wondering just which audience Charice is eyeing: her teen peers or their moms. Unexpected Harmony

OVER the last few months the four Filipino-American R&B singers from the San Francisco Bay Area known as Legaci have appeared on some of the biggest stages of American pop. There they were, belting perfect four-part harmony on “Saturday Night Live,” finger-snapping and line-dancing like the Temptations on “The View,” “Ellen” and “Today,” and crooning to a hysterical, sold-out crowd of 15,000 at the annual KIIS-FM Wango Tango blowout in Los Angeles. (They took the stage just after Kesha and Adam Lambert, just before Ludacris and Usher.)

If you’ve never heard of them, chances are you have heard of their boss, the teenage pop heartthrob Justin Bieber. Legaci’s members are his backup singers, which means that their camera time comes in blink-and-you’ll-miss-them flashes. Onstage they live between bursts of spotlight and the shadows of their perch at stage right. As they performed behind Mr. Bieber on “Saturday Night Live” in April, Ahmir Thompson, better known as Questlove, the drummer for the hip-hop tastemakers the Roots, singled them out on Twitter. He gave Mr. Bieber “cool points” for having “the Asian New Edition” as his backup singers.

They just might be the most visible yet invisible pop figures in the world.

Before joining Mr. Bieber’s touring group, they were rising stars on YouTube, now a crucial launching pad for Asian-American artists seeking the kind of exposure rarely afforded them by the mainstream recording industry.

“The stereotype is that we’re violinists or mathematicians,” the cultural critic Oliver Wang said. “So for a lot of industry executives there’s this disconnect when they see an Asian-American singing R&B. But YouTube is chipping away at that. It’s becoming a much more common sight.”

Micah Tolentino, 30, started Legaci with Jason Atencion (who has left the group) under the influence of R&B acts like Boyz II Men and Shai, in 1997, while in high school in Vallejo, Calif.

“Even if most people just know us as Justin Bieber’s Asian backup singers,” Mr. Tolentino said, “we’re proud to be out there, to show the world that Asian-Americans are talented.”

While the pop charts are a familiar home to African-Americans and Latino-Americans, they’ve been less hospitable to Asian-Americans in the United States.

“Asian-Americans are locked out,” said Phil Yu, who runs the pop-culture blog angryasianman.com. “There are definitely elements of racism, but it’s also that audiences are not used to seeing Asian faces on the pop charts or on music videos, and record labels won’t take a chance on that.”

Legaci can list its fellow travelers on one hand. There’s the Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger (her father is Filipino), the fledgling Filipino pop star Charice (who sings a duet with Iyaz on her first United States single, “Pyramid” ) and most famously, Allan Pineda, a k a Apl.de.ap, of the Black Eyed Peas.

“Mostly when you see Asian artists, it’s as D.J.’s or producers,” said Mr. Pineda, who was born and raised in the Philippines and immigrated to Los Angeles when he was 11. “You don’t really see people up front as singers or musicians. We’re always part of the background scene. We’re like the quiet storm.”

Mr. Pineda has sneaked two songs in Tagalog, “The Apl Song” and “Bebot,” onto Black Eyed Peas albums. “It’s going to be hard for a Tagalog song to ever be a single for the Peas,” said Mr. Pineda, who has started his own Asian-focused record label, Jeepney Music, and recently recorded “Take Me to the Philippines” under the auspices of the Philippine Tourism Department.

Christine Balance, a professor of Asian-American studies at the University of California, Irvine, points out that while Latin and black music have longstanding currency in the industry, there’s nothing comparable for Asian-Americans. “How do you market an Asian-American star?” she said. “African-Americans are foundational to U.S. popular culture, and for Latinos there’s the adjective ‘Latin’ music that’s used to describe a variety of musical forms. But Asians are still seen as foreign or alien to mainstream America.”

Yet the one place where Asian-American artists flourish in contemporary pop is on YouTube. The ninth-most-subscribed YouTube musician channel — basically a video home page that fans can subscribe to — belongs to the Korean-American pop singer David Choi (one spot behind Taylor Swift and 12 ahead of Beyoncé). Of the 50 most subscribed music channels at press time, 4 belong to Asian-American artists: AJ Rafael (178,117 subscribers), Kina Grannis (177, 560), Gabe Bondoc (143, 881) and Cathy Nguyen (140, 904). Since posting her rendition of “Airplanes,” the hit collaboration between the rapper B.o.B. and the Paramore singer Hayley Williams, a little over a month ago, Ms. Nguyen’s version has been viewed well over a million times; her take on Jason Mraz’s “Lucky” from a year ago, which begins with her declaring “My nose itches,” has topped five million.

“I never imagined for anything to happen when I posted my videos,” Ms. Nguyen wrote via e-mail. “Although I did secretly want to be a YouTube star.”

Other Asian-Americans with a notable presence on YouTube include singer-songwriters like Melissa Polinar and acoustic soul aspirants like Jr Aquino, Dawen, Jennifer Chung and Melvin Gutierrez.

“Asian-Americans want to see people who look like they do, who reflect their lifestyle, who speak English the same way they speak English,” Mr. Yu said. “Now for a kid growing up the most famous personality for them is not necessarily Lady Gaga but David Choi. That’s a big shift that wouldn’t have happened without YouTube.”

The Asian-American influence on YouTube has even been credited with bolstering the success of Andrew Garcia, a Top 10 finalist on this past season of “American Idol.” Mr. Garcia is Mexican-American, but he is married to a Filipina, and before the show he was on YouTube and had collaborated with Ms. Nguyen and Mr. Rafael. In early April, Legaci posted a video urging its fans to vote for Mr. Garcia.

“It was kind of like Andrew was repping for the Asians,” said Dominic Manuel, 28, of Legaci. “The Asian community is very supportive. Once they’re fans, they are rabid fans.”

The members of Legaci contend that many Asian-Americans turn to YouTube because they are unable to break through to the mainstream music industry.

“It’s very rare to hear an Asian-American on the radio,” Mr. Manuel said . “So we all had to find somewhere to go. YouTube levels the playing field. It was our chance to have our voices heard.”

It’s certainly a strategy that has worked for Legaci. The group tried the traditional route when it emerged in the late ’90s as part of a larger Filipino R&B boom in Northern California that included groups like Pinay, DNH and Kai. It performed in clubs and on college campuses, and released two albums of polished throwback R&B that mixed its own songs with covers ( “Little Black Book,” from 2006, and “Sessions,” a year later). The group also auditioned for television talent competitions with open calls: “American Idol,” “The Sing Off,” “America’s Got Talent” and MTV’s “Top Pop Group.”

“We tried them all,” Mr. Tolentino said. “And they all said the same thing, ‘You guys are great, you have great voices, but you’re not what we’re looking for.’ The first couple times we were like, ‘O.K., maybe we didn’t hit it that hard,’ but the more we heard it, we couldn’t help wondering: ‘Is it because of who we are? Because we’re Asian-American?’ We decided that if TV wouldn’t give us a chance, and major labels wouldn’t give us a chance, we would turn to YouTube.”

The amateur aesthetic at the heart of YouTube — singing somebody else’s songs in your bedroom or living room — had long been part of Legaci’s own upbringing. Its members all grew up singing pop and R&B hits on the karaoke machines of their Philippines-born parents.

“Filipino culture is based on performing,” Chris Abad, 28, said. “In the Philippines there’s a cover band in every restaurant, in every club. Everybody knows how to play guitar. You are raised to have music as part of your life. Our parents put that into our minds at a very young age.”

In 2007, Legaci began posting videos of itself doing mostly a cappella covers of Top 40 pop and R&B hits in the living rooms of its members (or of their parents). They were encouraged by the success of another Filipino from the Bay Area, Jeremy Manongdo, known professionally as Passion, who in 2006 went from being an unknown to racking up thousands of subscribers in just a few months.

“We actually had a meeting,” said Delfin Lazaro, 28, of Legaci, who had been a member of another ’90s Filipino R&B group, Next Phaze. “And we said, ‘O.K., we want to be the first Asian-American group to really make it, so how are we going to do this, since we didn’t have any money?’ We dedicated ourselves to our YouTube videos.”

The group has covered a few Boyz II Men classics, slowed Jason Derulo’s sparkling hit “Whatcha Say” into a plaintive, heart-melting ballad, and when it took on Iyaz’s “Replay,” Mr. Tolentino recreated its rhythms and studio effects using old-school hip-hop beat-box vocal techniques.

But it was Legaci’s version of “Baby,” the ubiquitous spring smash by Mr. Bieber, that changed everything. Joined by Ms. Nguyen and the rapper Traphik (another YouTube mainstay), the group stripped “Baby” of its slick production and re-arranged it into a passionate slice of pop.

The video was barely up for one day when the group received a call from Scooter Braun, Mr. Bieber’s manager, who just three years ago had discovered Mr. Bieber in much the same way, watching him perform his own cover versions on YouTube. Mr. Braun was so impressed with Legaci’s take on the song that he invited the group to join Mr. Bieber.

“I absolutely loved what I saw,” Mr. Braun said by phone from the Bahamas, where Mr. Bieber and Legaci were rehearsing for a summer tour. “I really wanted someone to be in the band who was from YouTube, so that Justin could give something back to the community that gave so much to him.”

Only a week after receiving the call Legaci flew to New York for rehearsals and then joined Mr. Bieber live on MTV and on New York’s top pop radio station Z100. The group has been pleasantly surprised by just how much it has been embraced by Mr. Bieber’s fans, many of whom now follow Legaci on Twitter and subscribe to its YouTube channel. The connection is not lost on Mr. Braun, who is working with Legaci on a record deal.

“The amount of exposure they get on the road with Justin is more exposure than they’d ever get working a single with a major label,” he said.

During the tour, which begins on Wednesday in Hartford and comes to Madison Square Garden in August, Mr. Bieber has made room in his set for Legaci to perform one of its own songs. It’s the kind of support that Legaci hopes will help let a generation of young music fans see that it is not unusual for Asian-Americans to be in the spotlight.

“We know how long it’s taken African-American groups to be totally accepted by the mainstream,” said Mr. Lazaro. “That will happen for Asian-Americans too. We want to open that door, and then we’ll bring everyone with us.”

There are Asian stars in sports, movies, television and classical music. But do you ever ask yourself, why there’s lack of Asian pop stars? I don’t know about you, but it kills me that mediocre artists get discovered and genuine talent gets overlooked because of the way they look.

Asian artists including Charice face difficult challenges:

*** OVERCOMING RACIAL STEREOTYPES — the perception that someone who looks Asian must be a studious geek; Asians are expected to play the piano or know kung fu, but not necessarily to sound like Michael Jackson or Madonna, or sell like them.

*** PENETRATION INTO MAINSTREAM AMERICA — making up only 4 percent of America’s population, they are too small a market, and too fragmented in language and nationalities, to offer a solid springboard for Asians the way other ethnic groups have done.

Again, this article is not only about Legaci, it speaks the struggles of Asians in the music industry. Charice is the first Asian solo artist to break into the Top 10 of the prestigious Billboard 200 and she is paving the way for Asian aspiring stars.

Pop star, Charice Pempengco better known as Charice who launched her 1st international album on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ is rocking the world with her 2nd international single, ‘Pyramid’. The singer’s latest single has already reached on top in Billboard dance/club play chart.

But, Charice is trying to keep it low and also shies away from the fact that she might soon become the first Asian top pop star in the United States.

Charice quoted, “It’s really hard to go international, so that’s why I’m not expecting it right now. I love the record, but I don’t know if it will go far.”

Charice, 18 claimed that if she becomes the top pop star in US then it will not only be a privilege but also a responsibility for her.

The singer said, “It will not only be a ‘really big privilege for me’ but a ‘big responsibility’ as well. It would show that Asians are really talented and can make it everywhere.”

The ‘Always You’ hitmaker also revealed that she was surprised to see that many Americans were shocked with her huge voice. The singer added that in her place, Philippines it is not a big deal to have a huge voice as there are many talented singers.

Charice, said, “It’s not such a big deal because there are a lot of little people there and a lot of them have big voices.”

“It feels weird to me that people are so surprised. But I do think, it’s one of the reasons I made it,” she explained.

‘I got the Bieber Fever.’ Singer says after appearing with Bieber on Oprah. Just hours after her episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” aired, Charice sat down and taped her own cover of Justin Bieber’s “Baby.” The two appeared on the show on Tuesday, and just a day later Charice admitted that she’s got Bieber fever.

“I just did that this morning,” she told MTV News on Wednesday (May 12), just a day after her self-titled debut album hit stores. “And it was because I love ‘Baby,’ it’s really a catchy song. I actually love covering some songs, but I think that’s the best song I sang so far, ’cause that’s my favorite song from Justin Bieber. I’m a fan. I love the story of his life. I love his attitude. I met him and he was really, really nice. I got the Bieber fever.”

If Charice has Bieber fever, then her mentor, music producer and songwriter David Foster, has Charice fever. He helped Charice lock down the talent for her album, including Ryan Tedder, Diane Warren, Claude Kelly and himself. “He’s a legendary producer and songwriter and he actually hooked me up with these amazing songwriters — he knows a lot of them,” she explained. “He’s really, really a perfectionist. He always wanted great, not good.”

Now that she’s finally released her album, after struggling at local singing competitions in the Philippines and posting videos online before being discovered by the likes of Foster and Oprah, she says it all feels “so amazing. And seeing my album it’s now on iTunes … it’s pretty amazing, and all the people who actually bought it, I want to thank them. I’m hoping that they love this album ’cause I really, really worked hard on this.”

But, Charice is also looking to the future and has her sights set on working with some other A-list artists. “Justin Timberlake or Beyoncé,” she said. “I love to dance and I think Justin is a really, really perfect example for an artist. He’s a great dancer and all that, and I love Beyoncé. I love her style, her singing and I think she’s an amazing woman. I’m trying to get her style, but do it in my own way. I think Lady Gaga is really, really unique. I think she’s a great singer, songwriter and a great person.”

We’ve read all your comments on what you think about Charice’s song “Pyramid” ft. Iyaz, and we’re getting a lot of requests to play it on AMP. Charice was in our studios with Booker talking about her new rise to fame.

Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco is the 17-year-old singing sensation from the Philippines discovered by David “The Hit Man” Foster. She started singing when she was 7 when her mother, also a singer, discovered her talent. Her mother acted as her vocal coach helping Charice win many local singing competitions including “Little Big Star,” similar to American Idol.

She started getting national attention when she appeared on Ellen and Oprah, instantly making her an international celebrity. Her current single “Pyramid” features Iyaz and is increasing in popularity among AMP listeners.

Iyaz & Warner Brothers in the BVI to Shoot Music Video

International artist and the VI´s own, Keidran Jones aka Iyaz along with his recording label Warner Brothers arrived in the Territory last evening to film the video for his new single `Solo´.

The artist who was born in USVI and raised in the BVI, made this disclosure to BVI Platinum News as he prepared to visit Tortola.

“The label said they want to see where I grew up so it´s only right I take them to ‘THA BAY”. I’ll probably be there for like three days shooting and photo shoots before I hop back on the road to continue promoting the single and album to be released in April! Areas for shoot are still left to be decided.”

The enthusiastic young artist said that `Solo´ is said to be vastly matching up to the expectations of his first single and big hit `Replay´.

“At least that´s what I´m hearing. So hopefully the fans support it as much as my team does. It´s doing well. When released, in less than 36 hours it went top 10 on iTunes and sold more than triple what replay did the first week, in a few hours. So I have faith that Solo is going to do well and hope the fans continue to love my music and show their support,” he posited.

Iyaz said that since its release, he has been on the road across cities performing, “and letting them know “island pop” isn´t just something that´s passing through; It´s here to stay. They love the song in Europe, especially in Paris, so I have high hopes for this one.”

While in the BVI, Iyaz will also perform at a talent extravaganza and variety show to be held at the Isabella Morris Primary School where he is a past student.

There, Iyaz is scheduled to perform his hit single `Replay´ and new single `Solo´. The event will take place on Thursday March 4, 2010 at 7:00 pm and will feature other local artists including Milf Mo, Them Island Boyz aka B.V and Drastic and Young Diction of Out Da Box.

Meanwhile, the artist said of recent he has been performing at numerous shows in several countries including the UK and Europe; and is also promoting his first album which is expected to be launched in April.

He also commented on his experience at the Grammy´s Award Show and being part of the remake ‘We Are the World’.

“Being at the Grammy’s was a great experience for me. I didn´t win a Grammy, but it was definitely a life time achievement for me. I grew up watching all these different celebs walking the red carpet and to be a part of it this year was something great. Hopefully next year it could be me,” the artist jokingly stated.

He said, “The We are the World remake was something awesome to be a part of, just like the Grammy’s. This is a video and song that I grew up watching with my parents. To be there with Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie, and all the other celebrities who were there, I was honored to be there lending a voice to the cause. I think it has definitely impacted me personally because this is something that will go down in history not only for myself and my career, but for my island.”

Speaking on his future plans, Iyaz said that he has a few appearances which he cannot comment on presently, but assured that big things are in store for him in the near future.

“I also have a song coming out with an artist named “Charice.” She is David Foster’s artist and the song is called “Pyramid.”

It should be released on the 23 of this month. Also, I´m in the studio working with Miley Cyrus and I´m hoping for a very successful album while continuing to strive for excellence and making feel good music that´s going to reach every corner of the earth.”

The young celebrity also took the opportunity thank everyone who has been supportive of him during this journey.

“I am definitely going to continue to represent where I´m from – British and US Virgin Islands and hope they continue to support me throughout my career as I put Island Pop on the map and let them know that the BVI has a voice too. The new single “Solo” is out now on iTunes and also on billboard.com, myspace.com/iyaz , iyazmusic.com and facebook.com/iyazsmith,” he asserted.

Charice Delivers ‘Jaw-Dropping’ Performance on ‘Singapore Idol’

MANILA, Philippines – Charice has delivered a “jaw-dropping” performance on “Singapore Idol” that earned her another standing ovation from thousands of people at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The 17-year-old international singing sensation, who was invited to perform at the talent show’s grand finale on Sunday, belted out Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” and “I Will Always Love You.”

“What was that! That’s amazing. How did you do that?” the show’s host, Gurmit Singh, said after the medley. ” Singapore loves you. We heard so much about you, seen you on YouTube, and finally you are here.”

When Charice told the crowd that she came from the Philippines, some Filipinos in the audience applauded. She also shared how she was discovered by Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey on YouTube.

Charice also sang her first international single, “Note to God.” To which, Singh commented: “I tell you my jaw dropped, bounced, and dropped again.”

The pint-sized singer also took the opportunity to promote her upcoming international single called “Pyramid.”

In an exclusive interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Charice described the audience as “the best crowd ever.”

“Natutuwa ako kasi hindi po lahat ay Pinoy. Halos puro Singaporeans po sila… kakatuwa ‘yong host when he told me na, ‘Singapore loves you.’ The best crowd ever,” Charice said.

I was so happy because they’re not all a Filipino audience. Almost all of them are Singaporeans. I was so pleased when the host told me, ‘Singapore loves you.’ The best crowd ever,” Charice said.

After her Singapore guesting, Charice is set to return to Los Angeles, California to prepare for the release of her international album. Reports said she will be launching her first global CD on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in January 2010.

Charice “Punk’d” on WoW Mali TV Show

Watch the Dec 6 episode – it’s hilarious. We first saw Charice get punk’d last Sept 4, 2009, at the 1st MTRCB Television Awards during which WoW Mali won the Best Comedy Show award in the Philippines for 2009. The latest episode was uploaded a couple of days ago (courtesy of D3Tinners) but unfortunately embedding has been disabled so you will have to click the link.

See the celebrities’ reactions when Reporter Madz Bulol approaches them with his microphone and tape recorder ready-at-hand, but he greets the wrong person. Charice appears at 2:02 but she’s not fooled in the least as she recognizes him right away. Sharp gal, our Charice!

The next videos are the older ones from three months ago, but I thought it’d be fun to include it here again, from the MTRCB Television Awards show this past September. Reporter Madz Bulol approaches several celebrities upon their arrival just to ask them a few questions. The segment is self-explanatory even if you don’t understand Filipino. The guests couldn’t understand either, haha! Watch what happens during Charice’s “interview” at 0:50 and again at 3:12. ROFL at her puzzled expression.
