‘Glee’ Stars Praise Charice

LOS ANGELES – The cast of hit American musical television series “Glee” praised young Filipino singer Charice, who is joining the show’s second season.

Harry Shum Jr., who plays Mike Chang, commended the 18-year-old Filipina for being an “incredible performer.”

“She’s great. Everyone knows she can sing, sing, sing. And people forget that outside of her being able to sing, she’s an incredible performer. She loves to dance. It’s a little funny talking to her because we talk about dance and she always shows me her moves,” Shum said.

Jenna Ushkowitz described Charice as “amazing” and adorable.”

She said: “Oh, Charice – she’s amazing, we’ve done a couple of scenes together. She’s adorable. I don’t know how a big voice like that can come out of such a little girl.”

Amber Riley was also all praises for the Filipino songstress. “She’s so sweet. I love Charice. She has an amazing, amazing voice.”

“Glee” won just four Emmys, despite having taken popular culture and the music world by storm this year.

Ryan Murphy, creator of musical comedy “Glee,” won his first Emmy for directing the Fox series about a struggling high school choir.

“‘Glee’ is about the importance of arts education, so I would like to dedicate this to all my teachers who taught me to sing and finger-paint,” Murphy said of his award.

But the show was still the flavor of the night on Sunday’s Emmy telecast. Host Jimmy Fallon opened the show with a skit that roped actresses Tina Fey, Betty White, reality TV star Kate Gosselin and Hamm into an impromptu “Glee”-style cover version of the Bruce Springsteen classic “Born to Run.”

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – It’s 10 a.m. on a Wednesday in the middle of a cavernous soundstage at Paramount Studios, and while the world outside is bathed in sun, everything inside is dark — everything, that is, except for the warren of classrooms and offices that make up the set of Fox’s “Glee.”

A dozen cameramen, grips and assistants are squeezed into Principal Figgins’ tiny office as four of the cast’s regulars try out their lines. They’re rusty at first, as you might imagine given that today is their first day back from summer hiatus.

Two of the main characters are having an argument.

“Finn was just trying to help out his handicapable friend!” Will (Matthew Morrison) yells.

“He was insubordinate — twice!” a large, intimidating woman played by Dot Marie Jones shoots back. “I am the captain of the USS Kick Ass, not the USS Back Talk!”

She stumbles slightly on the line.

“Let’s try it again,” urges Brad Falchuk, one of the show’s executive producers, who’s also directing.

She does — and again — and then she nails it, storming out of the room for dramatic effect as a wave of relief suffuses her and everyone else.

Welcome to the world of “Glee,” Fox’s monster hit that returns September 21 for its second season. The stakes are sky-high for everyone, not least Jones, the veteran actress who debuts as a formidable female football coach and rival to Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch).

Jones is just now being thrust into the rollercoaster ride that “Glee” has become — not to mention plunged into a cast that has bonded in the cauldron of publicity that consumed them this past year.

“I was nervous,” she admits. “(But) I was also excited.”

A few months ago, she was standing in the fruit and vegetables section of a Whole Foods store in the San Fernando Valley when she ran into Falchuk. She had guest starred for him and fellow executive producer Ryan Murphy on FX’s “Nip/Tuck.”

“‘I love “Glee.” I wish I could be on it,’” she told him. “Two weeks later, I got a call from my agent saying that Ryan was writing something for me. I was like, ‘Holy cow, this is unreal!’ ”

Unreal may be an understatement. Today, Jones is surrounded by young actors who have become overnight celebrities. One by one they traipse in and start milling around — first Morrison (Will), then Lea Michele (Rachel), then Chris Colfer (Kurt) and Cory Monteith (Finn). Only Lynch is absent on this first morning back — she had laryngitis the night before — and the big soundstage feels strangely empty without her.

Just 12 months ago, “Glee” didn’t even have a soundstage of its own. Now it has two and a half to call home.

For the 20-plus actors and crew swirling around, expectations are enormous — especially with 19 Emmy nominations that could result in a sweep Sunday night. The pressure is palpable.

“The first day is (about) making sure everyone is OK,” says Murphy, a man whose serious manner contrasts with the joyfulness of his work. “People are nervous. I get nervous, because I’m like a proud papa who wants the kids to knock it out of the park.”

The network wants that, too. But Murphy is resisting pressure just to repeat what “Glee” did its first season. “The obvious choice would be to make it bigger and bolder — I mean, 10 numbers,” he says. “Instead, we’re going quieter and more intimate. We are doing the exact opposite of what people think.”

An hour later, Michele proves the point.

She’s sitting glued to a chair in the choir room, tackling one of those intimate scenes as she’s interrogated by Will, Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Mike (Harry Shum Jr.). They’re all furious at her for sending a new rival, Sunshine (played by YouTube phenomenon Charice Pempengco), into the city’s slums.

“(You’re) an ambitious little freak,” Tina snaps.

“I love you all so much,” Rachel sobs.

Then she stops cold and turns to Falchuk, sitting by a monitor.

“Should I stand at this point?” she asks. “Should I walk around the chair? Is it better if I lean into Matthew?”

To anyone unfamiliar with the rehearsal process, Michele could come across as demanding. But the more time you spend with her, the more you realize it’s all about perfection. “If I give her direction even about a word, she will take it and change the whole sentence, and make it so much better,” Falchuk says.

Later, taking a break from work — though not from her phone, which she uses to text back and forth endlessly — Michele seems uncertain.

“It’s kind of tough getting back into the groove,” she admits.

The groove is so different from anything she’s known before. Michele was a Broadway actress who’d never had any long-running role on television, and was constantly being rejected either because she wasn’t a classic Hollywood beauty or because she was too ethnic — or for myriad other reasons. Now she’s a mega-star.

In real life, she is smaller than one might think — tiny, in fact. She looks every bit the part of a high school student, dressed in the kind of garb which will surely start a fashion craze for teens: a short skirt and funky yellow-and-blue knee socks, one of her two costumes for the day.

She goes over and over her scene, worrying about whether to play it this way or that. Falchuk says he wants Rachel to seem humbled, but Michele would like to try it a few different ways. She pecks out a few more text messages. Then heads back to shoot.

In the choir room, she faces her accusers. Only, she’s not humble, she’s defiant. “I was wrong before,” she says in the scene. “I didn’t want anyone coming in and messing up the dynamic. Mike, Tina, I did it for you.”

She lets the words hang for just a moment. Perfect.

It takes the crew an amazingly short time to set up for the next scene, with Colfer at a piano, especially given all the hugs and backslaps as the cast and crew reunite. Colfer, who plays the openly gay Kurt, is among the most popular people here.

We sit down for a few minutes before he begins a scene with Michele. He’s wearing a long white sweater with a big black bow.

“It’s very cool, very girly,” he says.

Would he ever wear it himself? “Hell no!” he laughs. “I only wear point zero, zero of his (Kurt’s) clothes. I am a jeans-and-T-shirt boy.”

This jeans-and-T-shirt boy, until recently, was living in Clovis, Calif., a world removed from stardom.

“Being gay was the worst thing,” he says. “I was teased constantly in school and it was almost like a joke to everyone. So I was terrified when I first got the script and found out they decided to make the character gay.”

Colfer hesitated to take the part — until his practical nature took over. “I figured I would rather be typecast,” he says, “as opposed to not being cast at all.”

This season, Murphy plans to give Kurt a boyfriend, who’s being cast as we speak. “I didn’t participate in the casting process,” Colfer says. “That would feel like I was on the gay ‘Bachelor.’”

Murphy envisions them as prom kings, which, Colfer says, would be “groundbreaking.”

“I am shocked by the reaction to Kurt,” he says. “You’d think the gay kid on the show would have such a narrow demographic, but it’s everyone — grandmothers, teenage girls and boys. One of the biggest demographics for him is older dads. This is the only show where (being gay has) been accepted 100% and people love him for it.”

The cast clearly loves Colfer. Until recently, he, Ushkowitz and Amber Riley (who plays Mercedes Jones) all lived in the same complex. “It was like a big ‘Glee’ dorm,” he remembers. “I was always at Amber’s, watching a movie, and every time she would watch a scary movie I would have to go to her place and sleep on the couch because she was afraid! It was fun.”

As he’s called to sit at the piano and begin his scene, he’s happy to be back. Last night, Colfer says, he couldn’t sleep, he was so excited. “This is what I live for.”

It’s what Morrison lives for, too. It’s afternoon now, and we’re sitting in Principal Figgins’ office, whispering because they’re shooting a scene next door. He’s thrilled to be back, he says, but also upset because one of his pals is no longer on the show: Jones has replaced Patrick Gallagher (Coach Ken Tanaka). “He’s a buddy of mine,” Morrison says. “I don’t know, should I call him? It’s not my place.”

Morrison’s character, Will, is the heart of the show, and casting him was pivotal.

“I saw Matt sing in New York,” Murphy recalls. “He had all the right ingredients: a masculine guy who could be vulnerable, a dude who could sing and dance. I always wanted to find my Gene Kelly, and I did.”

When he hears this, Morrison laughs. “Ryan cast me for one reason,” he quips. “He’s a fashionista and he liked the boots I was wearing!”

Despite the lightheartedness, he takes the first day back very seriously. Like Colfer, he says, “I didn’t sleep at all last night. But it’s a lot better than last year; the nerves went away really fast.”

Even more than his own character, he identifies with Monteith’s Finn, the jock who can sing and dance.

“I grew up in Orange County and went to the Orange County High School for Performing Arts. I did children’s theater, but I was also a big soccer player. In my junior year, I was torn between going down the soccer route or going into the arts.”

A teacher made the choice easy. “He said, ‘I just see something in you and I really think you should follow the musical path.’ And that was my moment. And that’s why I relate to Finn.”

When “Glee” first aired, Fox was worried it would appeal only to women. But Morrison says there’s feedback from men all the time. “I get a lot of very hetero sports guys who come up to me, look around first, and they’re like, ‘Hey man, your show is great!’”

He found out just how great the day those 19 nominations were announced. “I was in New York. I’m an insomniac, so I got up and took a seven-mile run around Central Park to clear my head. The sad part is that, when something like that happens, you don’t get a moment for yourself because the phones start ringing right away.”

He adds, “The next time, I think I’m going to turn my phone off so I have a little time to soak it in. It’s weird. I’m 31 — and I’m a Tony nominee, a Golden Globe nominee and an Emmy nominee. It’s been such a great ride.”

The ride is just beginning for Jones. As her work day comes to an end, she plunks herself in a director’s chair, wearing her football coach costume, black Lycra shorts, size 13 tennis shoes (she’s 6-foot-3), a new hairdo and bright red lipstick.

In Murphy and Falchuk’s last TV venture, “Pretty Handsome,” an FX pilot that was not picked up, she played a transgender character. This time, she’s breaking ground as TV’s first-ever female football coach, who, she says, will go into the locker room.

The very thought of what she’s about to accomplish awes her.

This morning, she says, “I wanted to cry. I have been in this town for 18 years and worked my butt off to get something like this. And when it happens, it’s nothing but amazing.”

She tears up. “This is a dream come true.”

After a stint on the country’s talent show “Little Big Star” proved unsuccessful, Charice (whose real name is Charmaine Clarice) turned to YouTube, and eventually became an Internet sensation. Since 2008, she has released two platinum albums, with a third record ranking number 8 on the U.S. charts, allowing her to become the first Asian artist in history to land in the top 10 of Billboard’s album chart.

Philippine Wonderkind Charice in Dutch ‘Stars’ Magazine

Charice’s * star * continues to rise as she appears in yet another international magazine, the August/Sept 2010 issue of Dutch “STARS” magazine.

Introducing: Philippine wonderkind CHARICE

A supertalent is not something you find on every streetcorner. Charice comes from Tagaytay, a small village in the mountains of the Philippines. A local fan uploaded some videos of her performances on Youtube, and now Charice has her first hit: Pyramid ft Iyaz.

Who?

Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco, the 18 year old wunderkind, was raised in a poor single-parent family. Mom Raquel left the house with Charice and Brother Carl, because of her violent father. Mom Raquel discovered Charice’s singing talent when she was four years old, singing ‘Happy Birthday.’

What happened next?

To help the family financially, Charice started joining singing contests when she was only 7 years old. She entered more then 100 contests! In 2005 she entered a Filipino talent show, Little Big Star. Ming (her nickname which means “cat”) left the show after one performance but returned with a wildcard, but Charice didn’t win the contest. But a fan, David, was so impressed that he uploaded the video on Youtube, hoping that someone would recognize her talent.

The next step?

A producer of a Korean tv show saw the video and asked if she would come to their show. Again, David uploaded the video and it was a success, the video had over 13 million views! One of the viewers was Ellen Degeneres. One week later, Charice was sitting on the couch at the Ellen Show, and a bit later she performed on the Oprah show.

Contract?

A Swedish record company heard of this special girl and gave her a contract in June 2007. Charice made a demo-tape with 6 covers and one original song “Amazing.” Meanwhile she got more and more tv-appearances. Her debut album ‘Charice’ was launched in 2008 and went Gold that year in the Philippines, and in 2009 Platinum.

Extra help?

That is what she got from Oprah Winfrey, Oprah called her back for a special “World’s Smartest Kids” episode. Chaz sang “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston so clear that Oprah really wanted to get her in contact with the legendary music producer David Foster. When Charice became David Foster’s protegé, she shared the stage with Andrea Bocelli and Céline Dion.

O and…

In September 2008 the Filipino-girl was invited for the 100 Year Anniversary celebration of the soccer club Feyenoord where she sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” before 30,000 soccer fans.

Breakthrough?

Charice hopes that her new single Pyramid ft Iyaz becomes a big hit. This is the second single from her international debut album (the first single was the tearjerker “Note to God.” Charice’s album will be in Dutch stores in the end of September.

Did you know?

…in the first week of the album launch, she sold 43,000 albums in the U.S?

Acting?

Like so many, Charice wants to know if she has it in her to become a good actress. In “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” she played herself, but in the second season of popular tv series GLEE, she will play an exchange student with an extraordinary voice that will make Rachel (Lea Michelle) very jealous.

In love?

Nope, not at the moment, but she gave in that she has the hots for Josh Groban.

Future plans

Chaz isn’t sure if she wants to study but if she does, she probably wants to study rights and becoming an Entertainment Lawyer is her area of interest.

Glee star Harry Shum Jr. keeps it cool with Filipino singing sensation Charice on the set of the hit musical show Glee on Friday (August 20).

Two months ago, it was confirmed that Charice would play a foreign exchange student whose killer vocals get Rachel (Lea Michele) contemplating murder.

“You were incredible today!!” Harry tweeted to Charice after a long day on set. “I loved your MJ moves. Super fresh [Charice] is one talented girl!”

Charice responded, “Thanks. I love your no bones super mega ultra moves! Definitely you were born from a boombox! Hahahaha!

Charice Gets a Role in Glee—Charice already revealed to us in an interview about talks of her being in the US series “Glee.”But back then it was assumed that it is more likely for a small role and she will be seen for example as an exchange student. Obviously, Charice not only gave a great impression as a singer but also as an actress. Now it was announced that she will be seen in her role in the 2nd season for even more than 10 episodes. Cool!

Charice has proven to us in a private concert, that she´s a very capable singer. Do you think that Charice can also be convincing as an actress? Tell us!

Go Girl: Did you always want to be a singer?

Charice: I actually wanted to be a dancer after I´ve seen a video of Michael Jackson. But my mother was a singer in a band and I listened to her at the rehearsals. I looked at everything. The first time she heard me sing, at age of four, she was impressed and she gave me voice lessons.

Go Girl: Is it true that you have supported your family through your performances in singing competitions?

Charice: Yes, sort of. I’ve certainly been through a hundred singing contests in the Philippines. This has really given me confidence and helped my family financially. Then I participated in a TV show. I did not win, but fortunately, someone posted a video of the show on YouTube.

Go Girl: You have been invited to many talk shows, released your music (CD), and now your first international album. Did your life change a lot since you became a famous star?

Charice: It has extremely changed. In America, everyone knows my voice and my songs. In the Philippines, I can´t be in a shopping center for ten minutes, a mass of people will be there already. Without my bodyguards they would probably run me to the ground. But fortunately I am small. This is an advantage, I dive off easy (laughs). But I’m living my dream!

Go Girl: With your success on the Internet you are often compared to Justin Bieber. What do you think about it?

Charice: Really? This is a great compliment! Justin is cool – we were finally together in a TV show and he is really nice.

Oops! Embarrassing Moments!

Totally Voiceless!—”I sang Whitney Houston´s power ballad in a casting show. I wanted to win and to sing just perfect. But at the end of the song, my voice failed. My lips continued to move, but without sound. The jury chose me to the next round, but only because they thought the microphone didn´t work and they therefore can not hear me. Really embarrassing, but I still had luck! ”

She is just 18 years old, but her voice convinced even the music professionals: Charice had already made herself a name before she got a record deal. As rising stars go Charice’s ascent has been pretty dizzying by anyone’s standards. The YouTube star made her breakthrough on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” where she sang “My Heart Will Go On” for Celine Dion. Since then she’s begun recording professionally, releasing her single “Pyramid,” and has been lined up for recurring guest role on “Glee” next season.

So, seeing as how this wunderkind is on such a quick rise, we thought no better time than now to capture her on camera. In these exclusive MTV shots, we find Charice on the precipice of stardom, but still exhibiting personable charm.

Charice is No.38 on Popstar’s Hottest 100 Stars of Summer!

Charice comes in at No.38 on Popstar’s online poll of the Hottest 100 Stars of Summer! Her Glee co-stars, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith, are at nos. 30 and 32, respectively. Ya’ boy Iyaz is at no. 27. Surprisingly, Charice ranks ahead of High School Musical stars Ashley Tisdale (# 44) and Vanessa Hudgens (# 51) although Zac Efron proves still popular at # 33.

She also tops the list in front of other singers like Katy Perry (# 50), Drake (# 52), David Archuleta (#60), and Grammy Winner Carrie Underwood (# 65). Not surprisingly, however, Justin Bieber is at No. 1 and other familiar stars round out the Top 5. Lady Gaga is at no. 15.

Singapore Sun Festival returns with a star-studded lineup

IMG Artists and UBS kicked off the launch of this year’s Singapore Sun Festival (Oct 29-Nov 7) in an impressive event held at the prestigious Raffles Hotel on Aug 6. The launch revealed a star-studded lineup of multi award-winning artistes like superstar producer-songwriter David Foster and his protégé Charice, Hollywood actress Sharon Stone, songstress Natalie Cole, George Benson, celebrity chef Curtis Stone and many others. We were also treated to a “live” satellite preview of Foster’s and Charice’s performances, including a beautiful rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” originally sung by Whitney Houston.

As if his presence in Singapore wasn’t enough, Foster promised audience participation in his performances, “In all my concerts, I usually get someone from the audience to sing for me because I believe that in every audience, there is someone who’s great, or who thinks they’re great.” Fans can look forward to rubbing shoulders with their favorite artistes at meet and greet sessions and after parties during ten of the most lustrous days this year.

Charice sat down with Seventeen to talk about her new gig on Glee!

You’ve seen her on Oprah (the Justin Bieber episode!), and now singing superstar Charice is taking on Glee! She’ll be a new character on the new season. Here, she talks to Seventeen about the show and her singing career!

17: Are you a big fan of Glee?

Charice: I love the show. I am more into things like CSI, but then Glee started and I was like, “Oh this is different.” When the rumor came out [that I was going to be on Glee before I knew I about it], I was like this is the best rumor ever! I’m excited, but I’m also so nervous to be on it.

17: What did you sing for the audition?

Charice: I sang my song called “In This Song.” David Foster wrote the song for me. I thought that I should sing a ballad song. I thought they would love it.

17: And they did apparently! How did you find out you got the job?

Charice: I was in Europe so I was on Twitter and I saw that I had over 1,000 responses and I was like “OK, something happened,” so I opened it and it was like “Charice on Glee!” And I was like again [with the rumors]?! I didn’t get an e-mail from the show so I wasn’t tweeting at that time. I just watched my fans tweet. And then after about 30 minutes the show e-mailed me and said congratulations.

17: What do you think is your biggest accomplishment so far?

Charice: All of them, but I think I would say the time I sang with Celine Dion. She is one of my heroes. The first song I learned was “My Heart Will Go On.” And we sang “Because You Loved Me” for my mom which was a huge deal for me.

17: You have achieved things that so many people dream of. Do you have any other dreams you are hoping will happen?

Charice: I want to have a record with Beyonce or Lady Gaga. They are both my inspirations. Especially Beyonce. She’s like number 1 right now because I love everything about her. Her fashion, her style, her attitude when it comes to singing. She’s perfect.

17: Do you want to sing forever?

Charice: I don’t want to stay a singer forever. I want to fulfill my dream career as a lawyer! It’s a crazy busy schedule, but I still have two hours a day for school because it’s a priority. I’ll be in court and be like (singing) “Objection!” But I want to be an entertainment lawyer so I’ll be in the business still.

17: Is that a childhood dream?

Charice: Well I wanted to be a doctor, but my mom was like “It’s really hard and it’s going to take 10 years, so I was like “OK, I’ll just be a lawyer.”
