Charice Performed at WCDE Final Showdown Gala, Las Vegas

Charice was the special guest for the West Coast Dance Explosion’s Final Showdown Gala last July 6, 2012 at Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas. She performed some songs from her Infinity Tour setlist – a cover of “Without You”, Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and “Saving All My Love For You” and her own “Louder”.

It looks like Charice will be busy again in the next months with her X-Factor Philippines stint as a judge and her new movie with Salma Hayek and Kevin James, “Here Comes the Boom” that is coming out this October.

Charice’s current hair and look

In this video during the show, Charice talked to the audience and said, “No matter how I look I feel so happy…I felt depressed that alot of people told me what to do…and it just made me feel unhappy.” She recalled that there was a time that she was sad and crying. Then she thought of getting a new hair cut. She made the first decision in her life and it made her feel happy. Looking at herself in the mirror, “that’s me, right there!” She even left inspiring words, “Love yourself and be yourself.”

From Charice’s tweets, i felt so much anger from her… i don’t know, i’m not sure… i think she should just forget about those people saying bad things on her… just let them say or do whatever they want to… i hope Charice will always smile and be happy and JUST IGNORE these negative comments… and she should listen to this song by Mariah – “Can’t take that away from me”… i wish for Charice’s peace of mind and true happiness

It seems that Charice is reaping the price of fame. When she was not yet famous, nobody wants to write about her. Now, when she did not grant an interview because she was not allowed by her US management, she was labelled as snub. Every move or change she makes is scrutinized under a magnifying lens. When she changed her hair color and cut her hair short and had a tattoo, she was tagged as lesbian. Now she is a judge of xfactor and some say she is not qualified because she has no school training in music. They forget that Charice talent is congenital or in born. She does not need formal training in school. Her training is her experience. If Kris Aquino and Ai Ai de las Alas can be judges of Pilipinas Got Talent, why can’t Charice be a judge of xfactor when her singing experiences are way beyond her years? Charice stay strong because you will always have our support.

Regarding voice training, I might add that she was schooled by one of the most prominent stateside vocal coach in Eric Vetro (not too shabby). X-Factor is about mentoring, too. So what’s this guy’s name (tongue stuck in cheek) who won maybe 15 or 16 grammys and became Charice’s mentor? Do you think that Charice learned a bit more than than anyone else in the USA (and a lot more than anyone on the panel) about mentoring? And didn’t this same guy (tongue still stuck in cheek) say Charice is like a sponge? The only other well-qualified mentor, in my opinion, would be Lea Salonga. Charice’s charm even glows in the light!

        @ cueA

David Foster said that Charice’s training with him was like earning a four year college degree at Harvard. I absolutely agree without question that a hands on one-on-one training in music with DF would cost more than any Ivy League College in the US.

As a judge at X Factor, Charice brings millions of viewers on a world wide scale to watch the show, she brings controversy, hate, curiosity how she would like at any given event, you name it, she brings it. These are all the right ingredients
for a successful reality show. All three other judges without a doubt have shown excellent interaction with competitors, I can not think of anybody better than those four with KC, the prettiest face on Philippine TV doing an excellent hosting job.

The problem with somebody like Leah Salonga would be a tendency to be too technical, too professorial, too strict with her judgement which could make a boring show. I don’t believe that would be the right mix. People don’t realize that Simon Cowell was just an office clerk, no music experience who became successful developing reality shows.

Your comment tells a sad story of a person that grew up in a conditioned and controlled environment where the word “NO” had influenced your negative attitude and mindset as a person.

Charice’s biography had no indication that she was influenced by a negative mindset that is why she is, what she is today. Always moving ahead, but thankful and mindful of the kindness of people that have helped her along the way.

I’ve been following X-Factor phil since the auditions to see Charice and to hear the wonderful talents the Philippines has to offer. BTW, I think Charice’s new look is great. If I was her age and in her industry, I might try something like that. Even though Charice is only 20 she carries an aura of someone who is an international artist and someone who has had twice the lifetime experience of her Filipino counterparts. Common, who else in the Phil has sung in Madison Square Garden ..and with Celine at that? Maybe it seems that way in comparison to the contestants. At one time, Charice was like many of the contestants who are not as polished as she is now.

I was sorry to see one of her girls as the first one to go. Jerrianne Templo is a really good singer and Joanne Da has a very unique tone to her voice. I think the judges gave it to Joanne because Jerrianne’s looks and height may have worked to her disadvantage — she looks like many of the too many other beautiful and tall actresses/singers in PI at a time when I sense that pinas is searching for someone knew and different to represent who they think they are now and their place in international music scene. Individuality and uniqueness will make KZ, Joanne Da and Kedebon stand out.

Can we get some kind of new thread going? This one has been here since May. It’s August.

I know this is off topic and not supposed to be in this site, but it can relate to Charice future because Charice and this guy came from a same humble beginnings. It’s a good review he is more of a fan of the original singer but out of curiosity with some skepticism he went and watch him live and guest what happened? I hope in the future Charice will improved more and change people’s perspective about her, just like what it did to this review. Enjoy…..

      @ nordin

I think the article you presented makes a lot of sense where Charice is concerned. Both are hardworking and dedicated in what they do, their presence remains very strong today as when they were discovered and introduced in the world of music almost five years ago. Both have managed to stay on top of their games where lesser talented artist would easily have faded quickly after their “so called 15 minutes of fame is over”.

The world of music knows Charice and Arnel are special talents I don’t think in the history of Philippine music there will ever be like them. While Charice continues to evolve in her music and on her stage persona, Arnel continues to elevate his music IMHO I think he is better than the original and can compete head on with any rock artist in the world. Critics and haters are still hard on Charice, I think only a Grammy win would shut them out. Critics have been kind with Arnel.

In the years ahead when Charice and Arnel would become part of music history, when the Music Academy of America honors them for their contribution to music, Filipinos will be more appreciative that these two great talents have brought honor to their country.

I have mentioned Pat Benatar several times as an example that short hair and edgy clothing does not mean that person is a lesbian. Singing songs by other artists(covers) is not very innovative, unless the singer shows a lot of creativity and maturity interpreting the songs. That’s why Charice should live in New York, a place known to purify artist into becoming aware, refined, dramatic, progressive, competitive performers. It’s good that she is starting to write her own material, because ownership is important when it comes to art and performing. Still I disapprove of our princess staying a lot in Philippines to be a judge in the X Factor show; that is a step backward for her. She should focus more on becoming an innovator and live in the states.

can’t wait until someone really makes an amazing hyper hit song for Charice.. if you will realize most of her contemporaries (age wise) have made it big signing their own songs… of course we would love to hear her sing the classics, but she really needs one that radio all over the world will embrace.. because if i remember it right, MTV did not really support her Pyramid video.. it was very brief…

this is my sole opinion. please read it and try to understand my reasons.
I think Charice choose to stay in the Philippines (here coz i’m Filipino) is because to show her nationalism and respect and also love to all her fellow Filipinos.

though right now, manny Filipinos are not positive about her, she’s like trying to win the heart of Filipinos coz it’s very important to first win your countrymen before you go outside or to foreign countries.
i know like what you said that she doesn’t need to stay here, becoz she has better future future and career internationally, but that is what she wants
i guess it is her sense of self-fulfilment to gain your countrymen’s love and support.
      that is very important.

I proud of Charice doing that, though a bit worried beCAUSE RIGHT NOW she’s out of HOLLYWOOD’s SPOTLIGHT
I HOPE THAT US FANS would not forget her…
      That’s my only wish.
Please Continue to love and support real talent.
      thank you :)

@Chameme – I will tell you why your comment is so more-o-nic. You kept on following Charice in YouTube everywhere she went- be it a concert or guesting. Its “like” she went to 30 places in Asia, Europe, Middle East and US of A and you watched her performances on YouTube on and on and on repeatedly. That’s the problem right there. The 30 or so places where she performed just saw her “one time” and liked her and clamoring for more. The 30 times she sang covers (one of her fortes) was performed for people who bought her tickets to hear her sing at least “live” and wanted encores at the end of the show. But you kept on watching her (for free) on you tube and the heck you wanted her to sing stuff YOU like? Who the HE*LL are you?

Charice has opened a lot of doors for new Filipino artists to make it internationally. Take a look at KZ TANDINGAN whose X factor audition is over Half million views already. Goes to show that Filipinos are hungry for unique talents that are miles away from the typical mestizo beauty queens who can hit the highest note. When Charice stopped the high notes and changed her image there was such an outcry but yet they are willing to embrace someone who does not birit at all and who has a more “artiste” type of image similar to Charice. This may not have been acceptable has Charice had not the courage to change her image and to be more true to herself which is an artist more concerned about her art than hair or clothes. KZ seems to be someone who is an artist. And there’s room for both these great petite young ladies in Phil music industry or internationally. I see in KZ a world class talent like Charice. But it all began with Charice … she opened doors .. Watch all the other Birit queens start copying Charice looks and K’s style. Birit is dead, it is boring…

Filipinos generally recent other peoples success. Charice knows what public resentment is all about she still experiences hate from detractors that refuse to accept her rise to international success. Her association with David Foster and endorsement from Oprah Winfrey fueled those hatred.

I think you’re right to say that Filipinos have experienced enough fatigue from the “birit” genre. Honestly, I believe there is no nostalgia for it but Filipinos would not welcome change until some music god from the western world tell it to their faces. This girl KZ from XFactor is the antithesis to birit. Her success could change the present state of the music industry in the Philippines and Charice could play an important part of that development.
