Charice wowed 5,000 in Qatar Concert

Charice wowed a jam-packed arena in what was her first solo concert in the Middle East. Fresh from a successful string of shows in the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, Charice impressed a crowd of more than 5,000 in a Katara Hall that was transformed from a simple screening location into a spectacular concert venue.

Last-minute Change

The September 29 Doha concert started a few hours later than scheduled to give the concert goers a chance to come to the new venue. Originally slated for Aspire Park, the concert venue was moved to the Katara Hall at the last minute, as the promoter’s response to public clamor for a more convenient facility.

In a Gulf Times article, Golden Relations CEO Bilal Taha said, “Katara is today’s top choice for cultural events and other major happenings in Qatar. We at Golden Relations along with our event partner Regency Travels and Tours believe the breathtaking location will compliment the top caliber act expected from the international artist.”

“It was amazing to have an international superstar in Qatar as the first female major artiste in the Katara Hall,” he added, “once again it shows that the entertainment scene in Qatar needs such events as the demand is very high here.”

Golden Relations is the concert’s official promoter.

The Diverse Crowd

While overseas Filipinos typically flock to Charice’s international events, more than three-fourths of the Doha crowd were from other nationalities.

Aside from singing original material, Charice also sang covers of other international hits like her signature Whitney Houston medley to Adele’s more contemporary ‘Rolling in the Deep’. Charice even entertained song requests from the audience, much to their delight.

Charice further yielded to the audience as she sang covers of Beyonce’s ‘Crazy In Love’, Lady Gaga’s ‘Telephone’, Tamia’s ‘Officially Missing You’, Alicia Keys’ ‘If I Ain’t Got You’,  Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the Way You Are’ and many more.

A British Fan by the name of Robert said, “The concert was exciting, it was good to see new talent coming to Doha and she has an amazing talent.”

Meanwhile, a Filipina fan named Lucy said, “She has the most amazing voice. I have never heard anyone sing as well as she can. As Filipinos we are so proud of her and it was amazing to get the chance to see her perform live here in Qatar.”

“It’s quite tricky. It was like listening to a recording because she sang the songs perfectly,” said another Filipino in the audience.

After Doha, Charice flew straight to Las Vegas for the David Foster & Friends concert. She had an early appearance in the concert so she could then fly immediately to Japan for the launch of her new album ‘Infinity’. Later this month, she’s also scheduled to perform in the Tokyo leg in the Hitman Returns: David Foster & Friends Asian Concert Tour.

Special Thanks to Mr. Bilal Taha, Promoter, Entertainer and Entrepreneur in the Middle East. CEO of Golden Relations, for the photos.

I think there are as many school of thoughts in concert presentations by various artists with their respective hordes of loyal fans as there are genre of American music. There are those who fill halls and arenas simply on their music and singing talents alone whether they were contemporary and jazz performers in the likes of Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Barbra or the almost immortal Tony Bennett, rock bands like Journey, and The Eagles, and now, the current crop of entertainers like Gaga and Rihanna who dazzle their audience with colorful and circus-like numbers that almost rival a Cirque de Soleil show. OTOH, as one commentator mentioned, entertainers like Celine and Liza Minelli, in spite of their enormous capabilities of captivating the audience on purely their voice and stage presence alone, incorporate some dance numbers in their performances.
It is quite redundant to mention that our Charice is one of the most phenomenal singers who luckily came in our lifetime and has brought much joy and happiness to people in various walks of life. Many believe and are contented that her beautiful voice and music alone will eventually bring her to the top. Yet, many of us believe that Charice has yet too much talent to show and are still longing and waiting how far and high she can go in her quest. And dancing, as Charice mentioned in some of her interviews, is one of her passions. In her efforts to bridge the gap and reach out to the younger generation Auau correctly pointed out that adding tastefully choreographed dance numbers ala Liza will spice up and enhance the experience of watching future Charice concerts. How about watching Charice on the piano singing a jazzy ballad, ala Diana Krall?

Anyway, whatever Charice and her management decide to do with her career, I am here (to quote and plagiarize Lantao) to support Charice to INFINITY.

Even though she’s has severeal danceable hits, Kelly Clarkson is one current artist who never adds dancers or dance moves to her performances in her shows. She has added back up singers to her band but that’s it.

Kelly’s low key approach works and so does Charice’s where the vocals are the main attraction to their dhow.

I actually mentioned in one of my comments in not so distant past that Charice energy when performing on stage reminds me of both Liza Minelli and Kelly Clarkson. Liza of course dances, and knows her places and poses big on stage with her hands and shoulders. Liza is great, and I wish she would just adopt Charice and poise her under her wings. Kelly moves like a true rocker when she sings; I can’t exactly describe her moves in words except saying that she’s very bubbly and she jumps up and down a little bit. By the way Kelly has done well with the right make up and costuming that works well with her face and her figure, which I wish Charice could learn from. To me, Liza, Kelly and Charice should be in the same boat with their big diva voice.

I agree that back-up dancers are not needed by Charice; they will only be a big distraction from her voice and emotions. (I think that some performers use very glitzy props to make up for the lack of voice, a good singing voice. But that’s not the case with Charice!)

Back up dancers are fine if they enhance the entertainment, and it’s good to see other talents get hired. Dancing is definitely one thing Charice does very well aside from her singing. She should show a lot more of her moves and her energy on stage. It gives variation and it’s a way to enliven the act. I’d like sometimes to see Charice sing with standing mike so both her hands move freely to express herself. Charice has the voice and the moves; what not show both?

I’d like to say, and some chasters might call me negative again for this comment, by just hitting the right notes when singing, that way gets old. Singers with that range are dime a dozen. More important is the connection with audience, when you tell a story that the bigger audience can believe and relate to. Good lyrics and melody that match, plus unique presentation, is the key. I’ve seen the old school as well, and I like Charice to learn from Liza Minelli and Rosemary Clooney, because I see their works copied by new breed of artists from time to time.

Hi Auau! I have read your other comments and it’s okay if you have a different opinion from most chasters. You were writing what you feel. As long as it does not attack anyone, your comment is welcome. Different preferences are normal anyway :) It would be a bore if all chasters are saying the same thing. Haha! Let’s continue supporting Charice. To the top and beyond, our dear Cha!

The best illustration of what you say is when Charice performed at a charity event with Jordin Sparks @ the “Skate For The Heart” event back in Sept 2009. Jordin had those glitzy props you talk of while Charice only had herself. She sang three of her songs from her debut album, In This Song, Breathe In Breathe Out, and Note To God. It was hard to tell whether the audience was cheering for Charice or cheering for the skaters. Poor Jordin had to follow Charice. Jordin, American Idol winner, has a good voice, but not in the same class as Charice.

I gave you a thumbs up because you are very proud of Charice, but I’m hoping you don’t come across as too smug when comparing artists that work together because they give each other their energy, and at some point they may need each other. A lot of us love Charice because she is humble, so Charice might want some of her fans humble as well when talking about the artists she gets a chance to do concert with. Will I get crucified for saying this?

The reason for the delay of this article is because we’ve waited for the exclusive photos as promised to us by the organizer of this event. And since we haven’t covered it yet comprehensively, we thought this is still newsworthy.

Charice feels at home in Qatar that she spoked tagalog on some local interview. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a series of future solo appearances in Qatar and the Middle East. She is so adorable and amazing that her presence and wonderful music at Katara Hall was a “home-away-therapy” to the filipino expats in Qatar.

Most chasters are happy & contented & proud I think to see Charice performs all by herself. She’s like a full package, she can entertain us with her beautiful voice, & her dancing skills(moonwalk-my fav. moves, lol, love it!).Anyway, I’m very happy to watch & listen to Charice only. I have no complain about it :D

I’m with you, and you mean well, but Charice is a symbol to both Chasters and nonChasters. Let everyone, both groups, have their say on what they believe Charice can do. Some are content and just proud, but others desire the maximum and the optimum. This is entertainment world after all, and we are in this world to pass the time and be the best we can be, if possible. For some people time goes very fast. Nobody is complaining; just optimizing. Working with back ups is good because that is creating jobs for others, and also positive vibes. No man is an island, as they say.

you just say anything that you dont truly understand that’s why you get a lot of thumbs down. you should know that david foster created and produced a lot of songs that were international hits. dont you understand that david foster handled celine, michael jackson, whitney houston — and the likes of them? they sang david foster’s songs that became hits in europe and the whole world! little learning is a dangerous thing.

do google david foster and you will see that he won 15 grammies etc etc.. and handled dozens and dozens of hit singers etc etc.. for so many decades etc etc…. enjoy reading!

I totally agree with lola-elrem; singers are remembered far more easily than composers and arrangers, but that doesn’t mean that they haven’t produced great work and have no followers. First of all good composers are followed by singers who admire songs they have written.

No one should be quick to laugh at these questions. I’m new to following the news about music and musicians, but I’d read that European market is a little different. Anastacia was big in Europe, in her time she could attract 150,000 fans to her concert in a park, I think in germany, but I doubt if she had done that anywhere else. A friend told me Filipino singer, Billy Crawford, was big in France, while I’ve never heard about him in the States. Different places, different levels of sophistication of the audience, sometimes have different preferences. Some singers or groups have universal appeal, for instance the Beattles; I hope our Charice will be the same way; as it shows here she is now big in Qatar, and she’s getting bigger and bigger with the Japanese and the Stateside’s. It’s hard for me to believe that you say DF has no followers in Europe when he actually worked with European artists, Russell Watson for example.

I’m not quick to laugh at this question, because people from different places have different tastes and standards. Different cultures, different levels of sophistication, different pace and evolution of tastes. That’s why it’s hard to please everyone. In the other hand there’s such a thing as universality and mass appeal, which artists institutions hope to happen, to achieve gold or platinum record sale in different areas of the world. I’m surprised at the statement that DF has no follower in Europe, when he in fact has Russell Watson, a European, to work with in his tour concert, and also Andrea Bocelli in the recent past i think.
