In a J-14 Magazine feature, Charice has spoken up to reveal her insecurity over her height and her decision to eventually accept it as part of who she is.
J-14 Magazine, which is one of the most popular magazines for teenagers in the US, includes the Filipino singing sensation in a special feature in its February issue titled “Stars’ Secret Struggles,” focusing on teenage insecurities.
In the magazine, Charice admits she was especially conscious of her height when she met Taylor Swift at the 41st Annual Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Award ceremony in June last year. The two also appeared along with Enrique Iglesias and John Legend at the Target Corps National Meeting in Minneapolis in August.
She said that she had been excited about meeting the leading country singer until she discovered how much taller the Pennsylvania-born singer is.
“I met Taylor Swift and I was like, ‘Oh man, I have to do something about my height’,” Charice is quoted as saying. “People tell me, ‘You’re so small in real life.’ I am insecure about my height.”
Charice also admits that she has tried to change her style to compensate for her insecurity and turned to wearing heels for a time before realizing they just weren’t for her. ”Heels just kill me. I can only stand for like an hour,” she says.
There is no secret to the fact that Charice is a major hit with teenagers in the US and around the world. J-14 followers even voted the Filipino diva as the “Icon of Tomorrow” in an online poll in November. So, there can be little doubt that she is a role model for young girls across America.
As one of a number celebrities to speak about their personal insecurities, it’s obvious Charice shares her thoughts in an effort to convince other ‘short’ girls not to worry about their image.
Meanwhile, in the same issue, romantic links between Charice and David Archuleta are again denied. Charice is quoted as saying that her songs are not dedicated to the 2008 American Idol runner-up.
“I dedicate my songs to my friends and family, not to David Archuleta,” she says.

Just The Way You Are Lyrics by Billy Joel
Don’t go changing, to try and please me
You never let me down before
Don’t imagine you’re too familiar
And I don’t see you anymore
I wouldn’t leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times, I’ll take the bad times
I’ll take you just the way you are
Don’t go trying some new fashion
Don’t change the color of your hair
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care
I don’t want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are.
I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
What will it take till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you.
I said I love you and that’s forever
And this I promise from the heart
I could not love you any better
I love you just the way you are.
Her diminutive stature is part of her cute, bubbly persona that she projects to the public. Now combine that with the most beautiful, powerful voices I have ever heard and you have MAGIC! As I posted in the past, people who first see Charice thinks that she is like 14 years old and the effect of seeing such a powerful voice emanating from that small frame is like a surreal jaw dropping experience.
Remember the guy in Ellen Degeneres show commenting about how astonishing it was to hear such a powerful voice coming from such a small body?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WGcfwc9v6c
I truly believe that her size is an asset for those who have never seen Charice sing live in person. People just can’t believe the voice coming from such a small frame. Call it the Charice effect as it’s part of her persona along her charisma . This effect is probably enhanced even more so for the taller non-Asian crowd.
Perhaps it’s destiny or karma in the sense where she was rejected in the Philippines due to her ‘physical shortcomings’ of what is considered Western beauty standards as described by her mom regarding the Filipino standard. Yet, she is readily received by America who saw the immense talent along with this so-called perceived physical shortcomings. The irony is that the Philippines have now accepted her (i.e. colonial mentality) due to her acceptance by America along with Oprah’s highest personal accolade ever bestowed to anyone – “The Most Talented Girl in the World’.
Not only is her vocal prowess a huge factor in her rising popularity but her personal story of faith and determination combined to overcome insurmountable odds in the fiercely competitive music industry. It is really the music Cinderella story of this generation of how a little girl with big dreams found redemption and is on the verge of international super-stardom. It really is amazing to see how many doors were closed and yet opened elsewhere. The many important people she met along this golden journey that lead to other opportunities is like a Cinderella story. The father she never had growing up is now personified in this role by the legendary songwriter/producer, David Foster, who is now her godfather and ’6th daughter’ as uttered by him. I do not know where this Cinderella story will take the ever growing legions of Chasters but I’m coming along for the long blessed ride! Charice, you are PERFECTION in my eyes!
…We love you just the way you are!

You maybe short but when I want to hear a beautiful voice, or listen to a song the really moves me, or need a source of inspiration I LOOK UP AT YOU. Your voice and your heart is BIGGER than your body.

You just don’t know how tall and big you are. There are millions of tall people that are looking up after you.Anybody who are your viewers and have come to see you
are mostly taller than you are, yet, look they are all over you. What more can you ask for ? The gift you possess is an envy of the world. And besides as you grow older you will appreciate more your physical being, because those tall and big people can not run and carry their weight anymore.Believe me that’s what I’ve notice with tall people in the US.So enjoy and have fun!!!!

As for the double tooth, Japanese purposely alter their girl’s teeth because they think double teeth are cute. Japanese find her cute, I suppose.

It’s fine about admiring other gorgeous celebrities and their perfect height,.. coz most people do admire taller people, they are just hiding it and does not let anyone know (hahaha! for sure). Just enjoy being yourself… there will come a right time for you were you will be this young lady that is soooo conscious to whatever image you wanna be. But right now, just like what your Ninang “O” have said, “Just enjoy being a kid.” We all know that you’re now on a threshold on becoming a young woman and believe me that there is no one (especially from your fans) is rushing you to be taller.. or as alluring as the other female singers out there. In my opinion, I say it’s still too early worrying about looks (or height for that matter which I think you can’t do anything about it)…. Don’t you worry, because all celebrities do care about how they look like and present themselves to audience… and if somehow time has passed you by and you missed realizing that you are losing charisma, then don’t you worry also, bcoz I believe you have a number of constructive fans (or non-fans) out there that will knock you back to your senses… But for now, honestly, I for one, don’t really care about it right now because in the end what I am seeing and what I think really matters in your line of profession is… TALENT.

it takes a while for people who are hearing her perform live for the first time, to shake off that initial disbelief that the wall of powerful sublime melody is indeed coming from her, and once over this, they accept in their minds that she is indeed a prodigy, then enjoy the rest of the song like they would as rendered by a superstar.
rather than saying that her talent makes up for her height, I would rather say that this is a message to all of us to not judge people by their appearance, but by what they can really contribute to the world … and also for us to not let physical attributes or social stereotypes get in the way of making use of our own gifts …

So Charice remember your height is an asset and never a liability. Your height maybe small but you can never be “under the radar”. You are a star with millions of fans. Just think of that – we look “UP” to you.
