Charice has admitted that she loves Japan, and following her appearance in NHK’s “Songs” program last week, it is clear that Japan loves her.
As a result of her performances on “Songs,” iTunes Japan saw a surge of download activity around her albums, and within 24 hours of the show (January 20), “Charice” had climbed back up to No 5 on the iTunes overall album chart. “Charice (Deluxe Edition),” meanwhile, rose to No 20.
As of January 25, “Charice” has dropped out of the Top 10 downloaded albums but remains at No 10 in the Pop Albums chart, while her collaboration with Unique, “Wherever You Are,” is at No 3 in the RnB Songs download chart.
Meanwhile, Amazon also recorded a huge rise in downloads with “Charice” topping both the pop and rock album charts after her TV special appearance. The album received 248 downloads in the pop chart, and 256 in the rock chart.
With her first solo concert tour set to begin next month in support of her gold-rated album, all of this comes as something of a morale boost, though there could hardly have been any fears of empty seats in a country that has open-heartedly embraced the Filipino songstress.
Charts are affected by the whims of the public, with sales rising and falling from day-to-day, which is why the promotion cog-wheel is so important. It’s obvious that Charice’s latest TV appearance acted as a timely reminder of her imminent arrival to the Japanese public.
It’s not the first time that an appearance resulted in a jump in interest in our favorite teenage diva. There was a similar increase in all things Charice after her appearance on Mezamashi TV, when “Charice” rose from No 42 to No 12 in the iTunes charts.
The pre-Christmas work that Charice put in in Japan, with a promotional tour that involved a mini-concert recorded exclusively for J-WAVE Radio in Tokyo, several radio and press interviews and her TV slot early morning on Mezamashi TV have clearly paid off.
So too have her collaboration with Unique, “Wherever You Are,” from his Japan Edition album “From Brooklyn To You,” and her recording of “Happy Christmas (War Is Over).” Those singles reached No 1 and No 2 respectively in the Oricon Singles charts.
