Mommy Raquel Defends Charice in Media Row

As elements of the Philippine media criticize Charice’s non-accessibility during her recent Manila concert, Mommy Raquel has spoken out in her daughter’s defense.

Charice flew back to the Philippines from the US for just two days to appear on stage in the “1@11″ event at the SM Mall of Asia on Saturday, January 8. The event, which saw her perform alongside Philippine music legend Gary Valenciano, was the official launch of new perfumes from the Oficianado Germany Perfumes range, including three “Charice” fragrances.

However, while the Filipina singing icon is normally approachable when at home, on this occasion she was heavily protected by security before, during and after the concert, and turned down requests for interviews from the press.

Her failure to make herself available has caused a press row in the Philippines, with some commentators accusing Charice of changing. One columnist with the Manila Bulletin newspaper has even suggested that success has caused Charice to “fashion herself like a Hollywood celebrity even among her countrymen.”

Metro Manila Philippine broadcaster DZMM Teleradyo reports that Mommy Raquel has now moved to quell the row by explaining that her daughter was unable to grant interview requests for health reasons and called for understanding from the media.

In the report, DZMM stated that, according to Mommy Raquel, Charice was really tired that night and so she didn’t grant any interviews and asked not to make it a big issue. Mommy Raquel apologized to the local press and asked for the matter to be closed.

According to the report, Charice’s mother also strongly denied that success has changed her daughter, insisting that Charice “never forgets to look where she came from.

Media reports as to the reason for heightened security at the event have ranged wildly from general concerns over security levels to the suggestion that Oprah Winfrey recommended new security measures. Mommy Raquel also clarified that neither Oprah nor a change in security protocol had anything to do with the matter.

Charice herself, has stressed that one of her aims for 2011 is to look after her health better and it now seems that she was simply sticking to her own promise.

With a schedule that can involve several transpacific and transatlantic flights, as well as grueling appearance and concert commitments each month, it seems like a wise course of action.

Meanwhile, DZMM Teleradyo host Jobert Sucaidito has called on the press to apply some common sense to the whole situation.

“Even if Charice wants to hug all of you and give interviews… she was assigned guards who were given orders,” he said during his program “Showbiz Mismo” on January 17. “They were only there for her protection, and this was also for her career. This is (her management’s) career plan, part of her packaging.

“Charice is from us, anyway,” he added. “It’s only now that there are guards watching her every movebefore dismissing the whole situation. It’s nothing, really. Goodness!”

I have NEVER seen any star who gives more of herself to her fans than Charice.

I was fortunate enough to attend Charice’s 17th birthday event in Las Vegas. Her manager Marc Johnston told everyone that Charice could stay for just 1/2 hour and that there would be no time for autographs or individual photos — just one group photo per table. Charice promptly proceeded to ignore these rules, honoring as many requests for autographs and individual photos as she could.

Charice stayed longer than her allotted time even though I believe she had a flight to catch. And after her handlers hustled her out a back door, Charice insisted on returning because it wasn’t Philippine culture to leave without saying good-bye. Just as she was about to leave, a few Chasters begged her to sing something a capella. She obliged, singing a brief version of “Only You” (which had just been released that day) even though Marc had also said she wouldn’t sing.

I’ve read many stories of Charice stopping to let a Chaster take a photo even when her guards are telling her to keep moving. She gives 110% of herself everywhere and all the time. Charice lives in a fishbowl — and she does so with grace, joy, and yes — great love for her fans.

So, I find it astonishing that anyone should criticize Charice for needing some time for herself when she isn’t feeling well. In fact, I think it’s essential for her physical and emotional health to have some “down time” even when she IS feeling well. Members of the press who are so petty as to make this an issue should be ashamed of themselves.

Intrigues are part and parcel of becoming a big celebrity. Either intrigues will consume someone’s heart and soul, or it will make someone mature. I’m sure Charice has grown a mature woman. After all, she had been rubbing shoulders with the likes of David Foster and Oprah. To those Pinoy press people who had nothing good to say about Charice, they just humiliated themselves to the world! Charice is way bigger than them they’re not news-worthy!

Charice definitely needed space and time for herself. I believe that she would have been very tired given that she had been travelling constantly for many months. The Filipino press must understand that in spite of Charice’s need for rest, she is now a super star. Therefore, her security would natually be beefed-up. I appeal to the press to give Charice a break so that she can do her job. May G-D bless her and keep her in the best of health. We, her fans love her very much!

Press in the Philippines seems even more tied to oligarchy than in the West, where connections are less obvious.
It’s not just the journalist, it’s the big boss who wants to “own” these celebrities. There is a competition in that thing also.
OTOH, people complain about the journalist, and mean his boss.
When Charice brings her country into Western spotlight, naturally these issues will hit the fan.
It’s going to be a challenge, but lets prevent Charice from becoming too much a playground for nationalism and political interest. But Press will make such an attempt, on behalf of its owners.

Totallly, it is not a big issue from us fans of charice. if you are a fan of someone or something, you know him/her from root to top. We know charice better than others because we reserched about her since then. We knew her likes and dislikes especially her attitudes. Yah, we all agreed that there really a changes from her and that is definitely her fame. Charice now is more famous than before. So, it is expected from the writers or colomnists to write unusual things to level up. And that is unusual false. Only it bothered me is about charice thinking.

Don’t worry charice!! We undoubtedly understand you situation. We are only worried about your health. It seems that you have so much work to do this year. Hope you can do it safely and happily!!! I know that you are happy of what you are doing now. Stay the same and stay cool. You are always our princess no matter what!!

Normally Charice has no problem and always grant these interviews. Maybe a interview via “skype” can be the solution.

Anyway, to the local media in PI please let Charice catch her breath. The poor thing has been travelling like a “ping-pong” lately to Philippines from USA, Japan, etc. These are unusual conditions on which Charice is operating (burning her candles on both ends)and your love and understanding would be needed. Charice is very mature for her age and she realize that there is only one Charice and she has to take good care of her health to be able to performed and compete in her world. Peace.
