Charice’s mother has revealed that her singing superstar daughter has had the right to make her own career and personal decisions since she turned 18 last May.
Charice passed the landmark age on May 10, but had her birthday ceremony on May 22, a ceremony where David Foster was conferred as one of her godfathers.
It may seem like a young age for an artist to be invested with so much trust but Charice has already had a decade in the music business. For the majority of that time, it has been her mother, Racquel, that has managed, prepared and coached Charice, drawing on her own experience as a singer to help guide her daughter.
Now, however, Mommy Racquel has taken a back seat to allow Charice to take control of her own career.
Speaking to ABS-CBN entertainment site, push.com, after the “1@11″ event in Manila on January 8, Mommy Racquel explained that at 18, Charice could make her own decisions but that she was always there to provide advice when needed.
“Of course, I’ve given her choices: if she choses this, (I explain that) this is what will happen,” she said, adding that there is already a natural understanding between the two.
“The reason why she agrees is because it can’t always be what I want. It has to be both of us that wants it because I don’t want to hear “Mom, it’s your fault!” I want her to do what she wants, and what I want too.”
In an industry where careers are carefully engineered, Charice is likely to have little scope to make the big decisions. In any case, the invaluable guidance of her vastly experienced godfather, David Foster, has already pointed her in the right direction, with her continuing success proof of that.
However, there is no getting away from the fact that for many Chasters, who she chooses in her personal life is of perhaps greater interest.
“As I’ve said, I’m very open. I’m not going to make a fuss over it, since she’s 18,” Mommy Racquel is quoted as saying in regard to her daughter’s choice of boyfriend.
“I want her to experience (love). Just like me, I went through it myself. I don’t want to control her when it comes to that. Of course, my guiding her and advising her won’t stop!”
Charice has already been linked to David Archuleta, with whom she sang “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” at the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at The Grove in LA in November. In fact, they have performed together several times over the last 2 years, and the two recorded the same song together for Archuleta’s album “Christmas from the Heart” in 2009.
The link has been denied by Charice, telling OK Magazine in July: “David and I are friends. I just want to clear that up because it’s scary (laughs), because there were many issues coming out.”
Whoever it is, they will have to meet the approval of more than Mommy Racquel – with David Foster and a few million Chasters all keeping a protective eye on the teenage icon.

With that said, I respect Charice and her family enough, that their personal lives are really none of my business. I just hope that we and the media will stop asking them about this personal topic.
