As if it was the most normal thing in the world, Charice belted out a short but powerful chorus of “In This Song” – at an early time of 8:30 a.m.! Sitting by her side was the Hitman himself, David Foster, who is also the writer and arranger of “In This Song”, a piece inspired by Charice’s life story. This amazing duo was out on the show to promote the upcoming concert, “Hitman Returns: David Foster and Friends”, live in Las Vegas.
Charice was first asked by Sam Rubin, the KTLA News entertainment reporter, on what David Foster is like inside the recording studio – especially the things that people from the outside don’t normally know. “He’s not only a producer, songwriter, Hitman, he’s a real person, you know”, she describes, “He’s [also] very nice.” Rubin affirms this, saying, “I’ve heard that from Seal…from Celine Dion, and so many others!”
Then, it was Foster’s turn to be asked on what his secret is, that helps him guide numerous artists in reaching a high level of success they normally wouldn’t achieve on their own. Foster attributes this to his classical background on music which he says, “Keeps them from messing with me inside the studio.” He also labels himself as the bearer of bad news and criticism, a responsibility he handles seriously, since the stars he usually works with only hear about how great they are and rarely receive any constructive criticisms. “It’s my job to make them sound great”, Foster adds.
Foster then talks about the gimmickry that other singers are now using to sell records, but he says that, “Charice is the real deal, and she reminds me of the first time I saw Celine or Whitney. They’re all great singers, and she’s carrying that torch.” Foster also admits that “It’s not all crap out there” right now. He adds, “There’s Beyonce and Rihanna, these are good performers, they’re making great records…but [Charice] is also a gifted and talented singer in the old school way.”
A clip of a young Charice singing Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” is shown but it’s cut a bit too early so the host asks if it’s possible for Charice to sing a few measures live. Charice then adorably asked him what song he wanted her to sing. Foster suggested “In This Song”, and Charice sounded so good, everyone clapped and someone commented, “Wow! And 8:30 in the morning at that!”
The interview then ends with Foster and Charice promoting, “Hitman Returns – David Foster and Friends at The Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas” an encore to the very successful concert Foster did in 2009 and 2008 at the same venue (which was also the concert where Charice debuted). Numerous chart-topping artists will be featured: Seal, Donna Summers, Natalie Cole, Ne-yo and, of course, Charice. Watch out for more David Foster and Charice appearances as they make rounds on various television and radio shows to promote the concert which is on October 15, 2010 (only a few days away!).
