Smile Magazine: There’s Just No Stopping Charice

Smile Magazine: There’s Just No Stopping Charice

WITH NO LESS THAN OPRAH BEHIND HER, A CHART-TOPPING DEBUT ALBUM AND A ROLE IN THE TV HIT GLEE, THERE’S JUST NO STOPPING THIS STAR

At first it was a rumor she denied, but now it’s confirmed and official — Charice will appear in the next season of hit TV series Glee, as a foreign exchange student who will challenge Lea Michele’s character, Rachel Berry. The petite 18-year-old — who rose to fame via YouTube — posted on her Twitter account: “When (the) rumor came out, it wasn’t true. Then after that, I auditioned. And I made it! Let’s party!” With all the attention she’s received (appearing on Oprah three times), not to mention the success of her self-titled debut album, she has every reason to celebrate.

Your song Pyramid went to number one in the Billboard dance charts. What’s so special about it?

Charice: Pyramid is my first pop and RnB song. I’m really excited about it, because previously I’d been singing big ballad covers by Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. Now I’m really thrilled to be able to sing my own songs. It’s also my favorite to perform. It has a strong message of optimism, of gretting stronger from the bottom up, and of believing in yourself so nothing can get you down. I hope that will encourage everyone with dreams to not give up.

You did us proud as the first Asian and Filipino artist with a top 10 album on the Billboard 200 chart. Your fave tracks?

Charice: One would be Note To God. I love this song. It feels like I’m talking to God whenever I’m singing it. Did It For You, written by Ryan Tedder (the frontman of OneRepublic), was a surprise and an unexpected dream come true. I was like, “Wow, Ryan Tedder wrote a song for me!” People initially think of me as the big ballad singer from Oprah, but wait till they hear the album.

Apart from Oprah (who called you “the most talented girl in the world”), you’ve also performed on Ellen DeGeneres’ show. Do you still get stage fright?

Charice: I still get nervous before I perform onstage, so I try to channel that energy into singing better and interacting with the audience.

I was also a little nervous when I recorded my album in the studio, facing some of the best producers in the world. But I had to give my best.
You have to show them that you can do justice to the songs.

Who’s on your celeb wish list?

Charice: I’ve met Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli and Mariah Carey. I’d like to meet Beyoncé or do a pop-dance number with Justin Timberlake. I met him last year, and he was so nice and charming.

A collaboration with Justin Bieber would also be nice!

You have a fun, quirky style. Does it influence your fashion?

Charice: I like trying different styles, experimenting with new stuff all the time. To look and feel good when I’m traveling is simple: Drink lots of water and get plenty of rest whenever I can.

Now that you’re based in the US, how often do you return to the Philippines?

Charice: I still go home as much as I can. I’m also with my mom and brother most of the time, so life hasn’t changed that much.
And since I meet my fellow Filipinos all over the world, we’ll always be in touch.

What’s your daily routine these days?

Charice: I still do the things I used to do before all this. Spending time with my mom and brother, keeping in touch with my friends and chatting online (I’m an internet junkie!), shopping at the mall, and hanging out with them as much as I can. Earlier, when I was working on my album, I was shuttling back and forth between the Philippines and the US. Now, I’ll be busy performing and promoting my new songs, and taking my college classes online.

And your greatest moments so far?

Charice: There’s a little pressure because I’m Asian, and it’s not easy to go international, so I’m just really grateful to everyone who helped and believed in me. Getting to visit different countries and meet different people all over the world is also pretty amazing. One of my best moments was singing with Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden, which was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Your best fan encounter?

Charice: I remember performing at the Singapore Idol finals at the Indoor Stadium last year.

It was probably one of the best crowds ever, and the energy was electrifying! I remember being very happy when the host told me that Singapore loves me, and most people in the audience were not even Filipino. That was pretty amazing.

Advice to those seeking success?

Charice: Never give up on your dream. Stay focused. It’s important that I keep my feet on the ground and continue to work hard. Fame and negative publicity are still relatively new to me and I’m just taking it as it comes. I still have a long way to go. Everything is happening so quickly! It’s like a crazy rollercoaster ride, but I’m enjoying it right now.

What’s next for you?

Charice: Well, I’m looking forward to doing the video for my second single, though we have yet to decide on the song. Hopefully it will be a faster track than Pyramid. I also hope to just get out there and perform my new songs.

Aside from Glee, is there anything else you’d like to be a part of?

Charice: I had a scene in Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which was so much fun. Acting is something I’d like to try in the future. Oh, and I love to dance!

I certainly can respect dagupan’s view that landing the billboard at #8 ONE time is not a true test YET of stardom. There should not be any malice attached to it. I’m sure that dagupan did not mean it as a putdown. Let’s try not to “lambast” someone who takes a very cautious stance on the situation right now. Yes, it’s great to rejoice (and rejoice much) about Charice’s present achievements and enjoy her success(es). CM people, I know, are broadminded and intelligent, so let’s not make a big deal of this incident. Let’s just go on with CM’s original intent, to support and promote the “BABY” (Patti Labelle’s word.)

when God answers prayer it wont be straight forward.God works in a mysterious ways beyond human comprehension.what happen to charice and her mom at the plain is an example.the plain was about to leave and got interrupted by the security people.thus allowing charice to be in state of fear and confusion but God always save His people thru or within our trials by His devine intervension.thats what happened to charice. She has a devine appointment. Her prayers were answered.God saw her patience and her faith in God that eventually somethng big will happen.Oprah was used by God as an instrument to help charice.because in the world of entertainment there is no other individual that can do miracles other than oprah.it is a perfect devine appointment for charice and something bigger than what she is enjoying now will still come.because when God answers prayer it will pour exceedingly. God bless you charice and stop praising Him

i like someone to make a song/VIDEO that features charice & momR after performing on OPRAH SHOW -boarded on plane & 2 policemen sought them, wondering why & what they did?& airport security interrogated them w/ no clear answers they gave, until “O” staffers led them to HARPO PROD. & encountered the MOGUL OF TV SHOW-one of the “POWERFUL WOMEN IN THE WORLD” who was restless sleepless night thinking of charice & inquired for more life story of charice, until she gave O her dream journal & the fantasy starts.is she still in wonderland, can u pinch that girl and momR cozjust like yesterday they dont have money, living in that small house, like her dreams crumbling on her since losing that big singing contest that she was hoping she will get that million pesos grand prize, but LBS producer/director or staffers didnt make that happened, they have something weird in their foolish minds not for charice to win, conspiracy theory on how this great voice will lose? and have someone to win? still unexplained theory of law? i’m still in awe,i can’t accept it,so still hurts on my part everytime i think of that lost. maybe some of u had gone-its ok now, well not most of us will just forget that. the video to end how her fame will start and hitting the billboard charts as an asian singer, must be hard to penetrate american music industry-but CHARICE WILL SOAR,LIKE LIGHTNING BOLT! this GREAT VOICE IS RARE-OR UNMATCHED TO ALL OF THEM. I LOVE THIS NEW SENSATION OF MUSIC,FROM CHARICE!! ONE AND ONLY SINGER IN THE WORLD W/ SUCH VOICE!!!IM SO PROUD!! i will have my 3 folks in pinas to watch DFF & CHARICE IN ARANETA COLLISEUM THIS OCT.23,2010, I AM HERE IN HOUSTON,TEXAS!

that airplane was the coach of her Cinderella tale – they were pulled out of it in time, which allowed Charice’s dream to continue past midnight, the fairy godmother having overruled …

they left their baggage behind, a metaphor for embarking on the new life that awaited them …

the title “There’s Just No Stopping Charice” is easy to conjure up with her numerous milestones of late, especially the unprecedented ones. But even if you look years back when she was still competing, you could already arrive at this conclusion, if you look deeply enough, based on her phenomenal talent, heart and fighting spirit.

and the contrast between her other-worldly gifts and her circumstances in life are just too great, that one can’t help believing that this young soul has an Appointment with Destiny, for herself, and on a larger scale, as an inspiration for the rest of us, with her life example full of moral lessons. There will always be challenges, as the lessons continue, but with her head squarely on her shoulders and her fighting spirit, Destiny will make way for her.

as well, what is significant to me is her being on an airline’s inflight magazine. Because it is geared towards the traveller, making no assumptions on his/her origins or background, it typically contains topics one should normally be apprised about when visiting the country. And the phenomenon that Charice is, makes her a must-know topic. And this traveller, like many others, is grateful to have crossed paths with her, which many times has put a SMILE on my face and weary heart …

The album sales may have cooled off here in the USA but it oould pick-up again after GLEE. In Japan though (the second biggest music market in the world)-Charice is hot, hot, hot. For weeks since her debut album’s release-She is no. 1 in Oricon & Amazon and no.3 in Itunes-beating every American artist today. Now, the European market has not even contributed yet-but by September everybody there can finally have their hands on her debut album. So, it’s true-there’s no stopping Charice now!!!!

Chart depends on registered sales. If you add those free downloads I’m sure CHARICE will be that of a “run-away train”. Try reading the story of the Beatles to know how much hardship they encountered before they became known. It is better you vent your negative comments into workable suggestions on how CHARICE could succeed from among hundreds of competitors.Had she been a “daughter of soil” in these United States, her efforts would have been cut in half. As DF often said, being Canadian, you need twice your effort inorder to succeed south of the border.

Charice say SHe loves to dance. Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Bretney Spear, Madona, Micheal Jackson, not so powerful voice but they Dance and made it to Super Star. Charice, you only sing lately and no dance, just walk on the stage. Your Utube in Dance move is one of a kind. You already top bilboard chart. If you combine your powerful voice with your dance move, Im sure you will top them all like a pyramid.
