Korean Interviews with Charice

BGM (Boys & Girls love Music) meets Philippine Star girl Charice

SBS’s show Star King has featured the surprising explosive singing of a young Filipino girl. Don’t you remember? The girl’s name is Charice Pempengco (Sharice Pempingko). After the market success of her debut album in the U.S. Billboard charts, she is now becoming a star and is back in Korea.

We spoke to Charice in the dressing room while waiting for the taping of ‘Kim Jung-eun’s Chocolate’.

(Note: Translated some parts from Cyworld Music)

BGM: Charice, Hi. We are Cyworld BGM, the no.1 online music service in Korea. Will you please say hello to your fans, Charice?

Charice Pempengco (Charice): Well .. I’m so glad to be back here.  (Laughter.) South Korea is the country that means a lot to me, and I think another home.  Every time I come here I really want to thank everyone.

BGM: Charice’s Star King appearance at that time surprised many viewers with Charice’s singing and many were cheering for you to succeed as a singer. Now that’s a vivid memory of a successful debut singer in Korea. How does it feel to come to Korea again?

Charice: Well like I said before, Korea is like another home for me, it’s played a big role in my life.  The Korean TV show definitely helped me to succeed and become famous. Every time I remember how it helped me from the beginning, I always hoped to meet the people again.

BGM: Last year, you were featured singing “No One” in the movie ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Squeakquel.” How did you like the movie after seeing it?

Alvin and the chipmunks

Charice: Actually, it was my first movie appearance. Asian people who play in movies are rare and not easy. But the people on the set were very friendly and welcomed me. Funny thing..  in ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks 2′ I imitated the chipmunks voice when auditioning. I didn’t expect to pass the audition in that instant (Laughter.) My next appearance is on ‘Glee,’ a High School Musical Drama.

BGM: And can we hear your voice only once, please ~

Charice: Oh please!  (Laughter.) I’m embarrassed. It’s up on YouTube ~ The audition! Oh, and Squirrels were very interesting when I saw them.

BGM: Korea and the Philippines have cultural similarities, both enjoy singing. Korean singer Sandara Park was active in the Philippines before, Freddie Aguilar, Regine Velasquez and MYMP are some musicians known in South Korea. Charice, what do you think about  the musical environment in the Philippines?

Charice: Filipino music has a very good environment, so many people sing better than I do. Lots of musical geniuses. I think Filipinos are musically gifted.

BGM: Charice appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, touching many people with the passion and emotion she brings to a song. But the video of Charice’s introduction in Korea that people talked about is the show Star King.  What do you think of The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show or Star King’s atmosphere?

Charice: Mr. Kang Ho Dong of Star King let me be myself, it was really a fun atmosphere, I really enjoyed it. In my appearance in Ellen’s show, it was a more serious conversation. The talk was more serious and it made me nervous, trying to make a good impression. Maybe it was more fun in Star King, more like comedy!  (Laughter.)

BGM: Working with producer David Foster on your debut album ‘Charice’ I can feel it’s really done by professional musicians. How was it working with him?

Charice: I worked so hard on it (my album). David Foster and I really let loose creatively on the album from start to finish. I think we got good results.

BGM: Charice, we would like to know what goals you still want to achieve?

Charice: My album debuted on the Billboard chart, it was Top 8, but my goal someday is to reach No. 1. Personally, I do not want to live forever as an artist.  I just want a plain and simple life. After studying, I want to start my own business, I want to work as a lawyer in the entertainment field. I still go to the hotel in the evening and even if my schedule is busy, I’m still studying.  (Laughter.)

Charice Cyworld3

BGM: Charice, there are many young people in the world who, like you before, have had a hard a difficult life, full of dreams. Now that you are fulfilling your dreams, what advice would you like to tell them?

Charice: Well ..  If you do not believe in yourself, it will not work. Don’t always be so impatient, let it flow naturally.  If we remain steadfast, you’ll have the chance eventually. Always do not forget all those people who helped you. Always be plain, simple, and humble.

BGM: Your debut album ‘Charice’ is very special.  What songs would you like to recommend to the fans?

Charice:: ‘I Love You’ -  5th or 6th track from the album, is a song I’d like them to hear. It’s like popular K-Pop, Korean people like to have rhythm, it’s a cute song. Upon hearing it, it may sound like romantic lyrics but the song’s actually fun. “I love you, but now I regret it…” has a rhythmic beat and interesting lyrics that I’d recommend to listen to.

BGM: Charice, tell us your other favorite artist’s music. What are some of your favorites?

Charice:

I could not possibly think even more.  It’s my story. (Laughter.) And..

Why…  I think these are my favorite songs until I die.

BGM: Finally, for music lovers of Charice and Cyworld members, what do you want to tell them?

Charice: Thank you for the interview. I’d like people to listen to my songs from my debut album ‘Charice.’ And in the future, for all Charice fans, “the Chasters,” I’ll work hard for everything, including my live performances.

Folks, lets not make a big deal about Charice gigling and laughing, she is still a baby or a very young person, its part of growing up.
Heck most of 30 or 40 years old in the Philippines still lives with their parents, so, its the culture, she is cute and looks happy when she doing it, she is only been a sudden celebrity for 3 years ?

Its a cultural change from a poor family to a sudden hanging around with big time celebrity, it will take a while to break the habit, and she is cute when doing it. AYYY PILIPINO…. just relax.

If you are a parents, go pick up your kids in school and see how other children behaves, laughter is always present….so lets cool it.

Charice is so famous coz everyone has been tracking even her giggles and laughing reactions. Anyone can have their own reactions, I think her reactions is better because she is so humble, plain and simple. More awards and projects for you. :) )

Charice as always I am very proud of you! That interview was done in a very professional way (w/ bubbly laughter here & there lol) but as we can see she is becoming a NATURAL LADY possessing the humility instilled to her by her Mom Raquel. Going back to Korea and express her gratitude to them most specially to the Star King Show which is the starting line of her journey to stardom, I would say is one culture of us (Filipinos) that we can be proud of. ALWAYS LOOK BACK TO WHERE YOU COME FROM. Charice, I will stick infront of my TV to watch your episode on Glee. You nail that acting talent you have inside you!! Movie producers will be watching girl! TO THE TOP BABY!

She always says there’s a lot better than her. She seems uncomfortable when being praised much – that’s how humble she is. At a very young age, she clearly knows her priorities in life – that’s how smart she is.

Charice, there’s still a long life ahead of you. You might still change your most favorite song…it could be your very own song, lol!

Nice interview. Korea is Charice´s other home and she´s really thanking the Koreans so much. Editing/correcting the translations on this article is definitely worth the headache right Capo? Getting better and better everytime, CM Team. Cheers to more “nosebleeds” to come (she´s not in Europe yet)

Charice I hope…… and I will keep on praying that God may enlighten the minds of those people who doesn’t like you to see the goodness and how pure-hearted you are…the humility. I believe you are God’s instrument sent to humanity to spread love thru your “angelic voice”. Always pray and take really good care of this God-given talent.

it is interesting how Charice matter-of-factly tells the interviewer/interpreter about the different aspects of her Cinderella tale, and the reaction it generates as it gets translated into Korean:
    - how Star King opened doors for her in her Ellen and Oprah performances
    - her first song, “My Heart Will Go On” – a difficult one to sing
    - her dream journal and how Oprah is making them come true

when asked about her great talent, I liked what she said in reply (probably in self-deprecation) that everyone has a talent that they should develop

i can see her maturing and gaining confidence through the responses she gives in the many interviews she undergoes …

I like it that she’s humble but at some point she will need to learn how to accept complements given to her and not just laugh. You are right ChriJSS, she needs to own it.

          Marissa,

She laughs it off, cuz she don’t want to offend anyone if she ever makes an offensive statement, she is thinking what she is going to say, innocent laugh takes place instead, which I thinks is okay, you should hang around with young people , laughing is part of their conversation.

Ouch! I think most of us commenters are old. The truth hurts. LOL.

I think Charice is Charice. Giggles and laughter are part of her personality which isn’t easily changed and I’m sure most of her fans adore that about her.

What’s amazing to me is most of the questions in all the interveiws with her are the same and she seems to answer most questions as if it was the first time, although with increasing sophistication and succinctness.

Those who follow her will notice that she’s becoming more and more polished. But maybe the giggling and laughter should be a part of her interviews…at least until she gets “old.” :)
