Charice Headed to Glee (YouTube Aided the Singer’s Rise to Fame, So She Shares A Few of Her YouTube Finds)

New Directions will welcome pop star Charice on the next season of Glee, and you better spend the next few months working on your melisma, Rachel Berry, because the new kid’s been dubbed “the most talented girl in the world” by Oprah Winfrey.

Charice will guest star on Glee as a foreign exchange student, Entertainment Weekly reports — though when we met with the 18-year-old singer just a few weeks ago, the very un-divalike diva told us that buzz about her joining the show was nothing but a rumour.

“That’s a great rumour, though,” she said during a stop in Toronto. “I wish I could be part of that series.”

Starmaking appearances on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and (five!) visits to Oprah have introduced Charice to TV audiences already, but it was the Internet that led to Charice scoring those chat-show breaks. “It was all YouTube,” Charice says of her path to fame — and the pop belter says she prowls around YouTube in her spare time looking for new music, herself.

“I love people who are doing covers, not only my songs, but other songs,” Charice told Dose.ca before sharing her two new favourite finds. Here they are. (Maybe if she wishes hard enough, they’ll score a spot on Glee Season Three…)

1) xyzaannalien Sings Charice’s “Pyramid (Barry Harris Club Remixed Version)”

“I think it’s the most amazing thing, the coolest video I saw,” Charice says of this clip of a little girl covering the remix of her current single “Pyramid.” “I was like ‘What?!’ A four-year-old singing the remix version — and she’s right on tune. I mean, she doesn’t know the lyrics very well, but she can speak the lyrics very clearly. I was really proud. … It’s so cute,” says Charice, who says that as a little girl, she herself was imitating Celine Dion in the same way (albeit not on YouTube).

“You know, I have a personalized microphone, with like Swarovski crystals and she made one too! But just with the simple bling blings and all that, and she put her name on it and it’s amazing. I saw her YouTube channel and I saw all the videos, she was singing all my songs.

2) VanJess24 – “Obsessed” Beatboxing and a capella Cover

A pop music fan, Charice says she tends to seek out covers of her favourite artists’ hits — like this one of Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed.”

“I’ve discovered a lot!” she says, but this duo stuck out in her memory. “They’re like sisters, they’re covering all the new songs, but just a cappella. And one’s just doing the beat box, it’s really amazing.”
