Charice Promotes Valentine’s Concert on “Mornings@ ANC”

“2009 was definitely a good year for Charice, taking the international music scene by storm with her hit performances. It was also marked by a lot of firsts such as launching her first international single Note to God on the Oprah Winfrey Show and appearing in her first feature film ‘Alvin & The Chipmunks, Squeakquel.’ This February, her local fans are in for a treat as she is set to stage a one-night Valentine’s concert with top artists Erik Santos and Ogie Alcasid, and directed by the maestro himself, Ryan Cayabyab.”

Charice was announced as ANC’s Newsmaker of the Year in 2009. Here she is finally joining them in the ANC studio for an interview to promote her Valentine’s concert at the PICC Plenary Hall on February 14.

The interviewer asked Charice if there was a lot of pressure to put the concert together, with people expecting so much from her, especially being just 17 years old.

Charice: I want the audience who will watch the concert to hear a different Charice, and at the same time they still won’t miss the old Charice. So preferably no pressure, I just want to enjoy. Because once I feel the pressure, the show will get ruined. I guess I am like that… once I get nervous, everything gets ruined.

Let’s grant Charice’s wish and keep things fun and happy with well wishes to Charice, Ryan Cayabyab, and their fellow performers. “No pressure, no pressure…” Good Luck Charice! Labyo Labyo <3

Charice also performed the hit song “Already Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, currently charting at #3 Adult Pop Songs on the Billboard Hot 100. Perhaps she’ll sing this song at the concert!

Also regarding the concert, this interview with Charice was published at libre.com

How did your family spend Valentine’s Day when you were not famous yet?
Charice: I was always in school then. Or we’d just be at home in Cabuyao, Laguna. Wala kaming pera so ’pag namasyal kami dun lang malapit sa dagat.
[We didn't have any money so when we traveled or vacationed, we would just go to the nearby beach.]
Note: Laguna is well known for it’s hot springs and nice beaches.

Did anybody send you flowers or a card when you were still in school?
Charice: Schoolmates meron, minsan nag-iiwan ng flowers at food, may kasamang letter. Pero ’di naman sila nagpapakilala.
[I had school mates, sometimes they would leave flowers and food with a letter. But I didn't know who they were.] …secret Valentine :)

What would be an ideal Valentine date?
Charice: Dinner, sine, mamasyal sa Samar o sa Baguio. Or yung ’di ko pa nararating, Boracay. Nung nanalo ako ng 3rd place sa Little Big Star may prize na trip for two to Boracay. Pero hindi namin nagamit kasi gusto ko kasama ang brother ko.
[Dinner, movie, traveling to Samar or Baguio or somewhere i haven't been to, Boracay. When I won 3rd place at Little Big Star, the prize was trip for 2 to Boracay but we weren't able to use it because I wanted to have my brother with us.]

Who’s your fantasy date?
Charice: Justin Timberlake.

Name other artists who could do a perfect Valentine show.
Charice: Sarah Geronimo kasi kahit ano’ng ipakanta sa kanya, bagay.
[Sarah Geronimo, because anything you ask her to sing, she will sing it well.]

What’s the most romantic song for you and why?
Charice: Right now it’s an Italian song called Adagio (Slowly) which I sang recently as a guest in an Italian singing competition. Originally it was sung by Lara Fabian. It’s a heartbreaking song.

Why should we watch your concert?
Charice: Maganda yung concept. [It’s a good concept.] Actually it was inspired by Beyonce, but I’ll be singing other songs, different from what I usually do, with Ryan Cayabyab as musical director.

.
So there you have it, dear chasters… a Valentine’s concert inspired by Beyonce, with the audience hearing a ‘different’ Charice and also some of the ‘old’ Charice. Sounds fantastic. And hopefully Mr. C will produce a very nice DVD of this event so that chasters everywhere can enjoy the concert as well. I will close with the words of our ANC interview host…

“ What a fun, fun night. It will be one of the best ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day! “

I am glad that Charice gets to be handled by one of the best, if not the best, musical directors which the Philippines can offer. Mr. Cayabyab is highly regarded among local artists for bringing out the best in them just like DF has done to the talents he had groomed. Cha is really blessed to be handled by Mr. Cayabyab and should he see some areas where his expertise can contribute to Cha’s development as a musical artist, then it would be to Cha’s advantage. After all, the biggest room in the world is still the room for self-improvement.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. And for Cha’s part, it’s not just any teacher at that – it’s the best of the best. I think Fantasia’s ‘I Believe’ rendition that we see Cha singing in Youtube was most likely arranged by Mr. Cayabyab who also played the piano, just like DF, at that performance. Good luck to your Valentine’s concert, Charice!

I give you a Thumbs Up shymaganda for making me smile. I love your candid remarks below and your English is fine. We all get it and you closed nicely by supporting Mr. C. and the concert. It’s good you are also a musician. You make a good point about listening with your ears and not your eyes. For instance, when I first “saw” Charice perform IF I WERE A BOY on the morning jam show, I got distracted by the audience, um, they were a little offbeat I think. It affected my appreciation of the song. But when lantaoislands uploaded his Valentine concert promotion video with this song and I “heard” it, omg it was the most powerful rendition I’ve ever heard, better than Beyonce’s… the melisma, the sustained high note, so much soul she put into it. And the ending, wow, Charice just made that song her own once again. I LOVE IT! So thanks for that advice. Please write again and don’t be so shy hehe. Perhaps you shouldn’t drink though when you are writing LoL. If you really want to reach me for help with your English, you can always click the CONTACT button at the top of the page but, seriously, your English is fine. We don’t give grades here. ^_^ And also, good luck to Charice, she has one more day to go till the concert!!!

  3. shymaganda says:

Little one. You have been consistent to all your performances. This Valentines Concert is no different. Just have fun and be as as happy like you’ve always been. i’m always your silent supporter. i have predicted that it will be a success. You’re the most talented girl in the world said your mom Oprah. I believed that and who is to argue. At your tender age you’re really the best i’ve heard.

Now i read that Charice’s musical director according to people who are his fans in CM is good. They even said he’s got an expert opinion and go as far as scientific opinion . He can almost get away with what he says because of his academics achievements and the so called experience. he can almost get away with murder with that credentials. He’s just good in my opinion. Why? I am in a band too. I know what he can do. When he’s playing piano it’s not bad. His voice just listen and you be the judge.

if i am not mistaken all charice’s so called judge with all the credentials and the masters degrees in music are above her and DF, Italy orchestra right. No way man. Why do you think the biggest fish got away in PI? It’s because those with credentials listened to charice’s music with their eye and not their ear. What a shame. The biggest fish in the entertainment from PI got away because the best musical guru use their eye when listening to Charice instead of their ear. You should get embarassed who ever you are.

Little one you’ll do great for sure.

If they want to watch The most talented girl in the world, PICC is the place to go. Tickets are expensive but it’s worth it.

If people wants to watch with a cheap tickets, There are 3 concerts available.just look.

reminder… “No pressure, no pressure” I might add, no negatives please, this issue has been discussed enough already. Let’s all move on and just wish Charice and Mr C. the best…

Didn’t you guys think lantaoislands promotion video was awesome? (see the video above) ..esp Charice’s rendition of “If I Were a Boy” just sooo powerful. Leave a comment at YouTube if you liked it!

I’m thrilled for Charice that she is headlining a concert with the maestro who is very well-regarded in the Philippines. This can only be good exposure for her. However, there are a lot of other shows going on the same date that’ll cut into ticket sales… – “Competing for the audience on the 14th are Charice with Ryan Cayabyab, Kuh Ledesma with Christopher de Leon and Jomari Yllana, Ai-Ai de las Alas with a bunch of guests, the eternal Valentine un-couple Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez, and the brother-sister tandem of Raymond Lauchengco and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.”

@Joelabad1: I totally agree with you. I was kinda bothered about what Ryan Cayabyab said during the interview. It was not a very nice press material. I found him condescending at best, like he was THE MAESTRO and there is this young girl who is not really the best, she does not have that much confidence and her voice is raw…

He must not have seen her latest guestings. Charice has improved so much in the past year she was under David Foster’s guidance.

Hhhhmmm… He must have forgotten that what she brings to the table is something he does not have – a worldwide audience, a very wide international fan base, David Foster and Oprah’s magic, plus 20 million YouTube hits and counting… I hope his opinion will change after this show. Go Charice, show him the stuff you are made of.

But with all due respect, Ryan Cayabyab is a Philippine legend, the best in the industry and I had admired him for years. I do know he will make this concert a spectacular one.

You know what, after everything is said and done, all we have to do is watch what happens to Charice’s valentine’s concert. I know Charice’s concert is by no means a cheap concert and I believe it is one of the more expensive ones. And who ever heard of ordinary people from different contries sponsoring concert goers, purchasing the tickets for the concert so that co-fans shall be able to watch? I believe this is the first time somnething like this is happening. who of the entertainers has ever had a fan base which loved her so much to do this? This is definitely a sign that it’s Charice’s name that’s carrying this whole thing. I just wished a real good professional group records the concert just as they did with the “Skate” and come up with terrific quality videos for all of us “foreigners” who aren’t able to go to the concert will also enjoy. I wish. Go Charice, the curtain’s going up and the stage is all yours.

I was watching video of Charice, as I often do, and I recalled the Oprah Show where David Foster said to Oprah here at 3:35 “it really is an extraordinary gift and she seems to ‘get’ how to take care of it and preserve it and cherish it, which is really the important thing…” Charice is just at the beginning of a long and illustrious singing career and the Valentine’s concert goers will have a story to share in the future of how they watched Charice perform when she was just 17 years old. How lucky can they get! I’m looking forward to video…

Since I started the comments from the previous article (closed for comments), I just want to give some final thoughts here and let’s all look forward to the concert.

I am well aware of Ryan Cayabyab’s accomplishments in the Philippine music industry when I wrote my comment. I applaud him and for what he meant to our local music history. And that is why it was even more disappointing to hear about his opinion regarding Charice, especially being her musical director of this concert. He felt that she is still raw to sing mature songs. The last thing I will describe Charice is being raw. This 17 yr old is as seasoned as anyone I’ve ever seen. He also said that there are other singers better than Charice but then added that her confidence has improved which can never be bought. Obviously he hasn’t seen Charice ‘s videos. If he saw her Starking performance, he would have known that this girl already has the ultimate confidence. How about the DF PBS special? The singing of the US Anthem in front of 50k people? Or my fave video, the Celine duet, in front of 18k in NY’s Madison Square Garden? I’ve never seen a girl that confident, ever! She might say she’s nervous but we couldn’t tell by the way she nails the difficult songs every single time. As for mature songs, the Philippines is a nation of songbirds as Charice herself said in one of her interviews. Young kids sing mature songs when they join singing contest and RC should know this. In regards to singing from the throat, don’t you think David and her vocal coach, Eric, would have already said something about this? I am neither a vocal coach nor a musician so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. My concern is that RC might mess up what we all love about Charice’s voice by giving too many inputs. But I will be open-minded and hope it will only help her. And lastly about Charice’s career, yes, nobody really knows the future. Even some of the great voices (Lara Fabian for one) don’t always equal success. But this upcoming album has success written all over it. Pyramid, In This Song, Reset, and Note to God, to begin with. I have no doubt we will be hearing these songs in the radio. I heard Beyonce is taking a break this year, and Whitney and Mariah just had their albums and are slowly fading. I don’t think Taylor, Gaga, and the Peas will duplicate their monster ’09 so I wouldn’t be surprise to see Charice have multiple nominations in AMA and the Grammys. So we can only hope that Charice’s career will last forever. With the help of Oprah, David, and her growing number of fans everywhere, anything is possible. This talent is just too good not to last.

So in summary, I think RC just made unnecessary comments and we die-hard fans are just voicing our opinions based on his opinion. Even if this concert becomes a mega success, I will not give RC any credit. Zero. Ok, I will give him 15%. It’s Valentines Day, after all.

Let’s move on and I actually am excited about this concert. I hope she sings some of my favorite love songs. Then two days later, Pyramid!!!

Cha, kita kits tayo sa album signing mo here in LA. I will buy 20 copies so I hope you sign them all.
    Take care always.

I agree, #1, it was Charice’s first international appearance on Starking that got my attention and her stage presence was definitely more than just plain old confidence. She owned the stage. Listen to the Korean judges’ comments. Anymore confidence and she’d probably be taking over the host’s lines and speaking Tagalog to the Korean audience as well. And as for the rest of RC’s comments, unprofessional would be an understatement. Sad to say but he sounded like he had a chip on his shoulder. Scary thing for him to be the musical director of Charice in this valentine’s concert. Just watch, despite any attempt to undermine the concert for what ever reason, Charice will come out shining even more. I believe it.

From what I heard, Ryan Cayabyab is a weirdo anyway. He’s probably just ego-tripping like a crazy maestro on the podium. Somebody needs to remind him that he’s dealing with a child whose enormous amount of talent might just surpass his trying hard effort of being a musical genius. Remember what David Foster said about Charice’s ear for music on Good Morning America? Let’s just hope he won’t ruin the show for her.

I wonder why she keeps singing cover songs on her guestings, she does have her own songs which I think are great like In This Song, Breath In, Fingerprint. Is it maybe because they are not officially released yet and DF don’t want her to get ahead of his plans? I specially love “In This Song”, I’ve watched and listened to the video uploaded by Bidangbata2 over and over and I am convinced that it’s her best original song so far and I find it even better than Note To God.

I wonder the same thing too, but I think Charice is just wanting to explore other genres. She likes to dance and do R & B and all styles of music. I am actually happy that she covers other artists, now I can hear how those “songs” should be sang. ha ha. I would like to see her record more albums – tagalog, dance albums, classics, rap, jazz, ballads etc. She can do all these genres. If only she can stay in one place and concentrate on one thing. Now she is all over the place – I guess at this point this is needed to increase her profile internationally. All in good time. I am just happy to watch her perform.
She will make a good actress too. Performing is a lot about acting, although with Charice it all comes out naturally, and not contrived. She really feels her songs that is why she touches us (her audience) to the core.
She is my all time favorite singer past and present and future…the only singer that I ever cared about personally.
