Shock and Awe: The top 10 biggest entertainment events in 2009
MANILA, Philippines – Before we completely leave the year 2009 and move forward to 2010, here’s a look at the top 10 biggest entertainment events, controversies and issues that left majority of us shocked, awed and inspired.
Top 5: Arnel Pineda, Charice, and Rhap Salazar take US by storm.
Charice, Pineda and Salazar were among the biggest newsmakers this year following their recognition in the international music scene. Charice officially launched her first international single called “Note To God” on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” After the 17-year-old songstress, Pineda also made a special appearance on Oprah with his group, American rock band “Journey.” Salazar has yet to be invited by Winfrey, but he already made his mark after winning in an international singing contest. Salazar later appeared in American talk show “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

I am not a Filipino, and I don’t know much about Filipino popular culture. The success of Charice, Arnel Pineda and Rhap Salazar on the international scene was “only” No. 5 on the list of Filipino entertainment events for last year. The two top items were sex scandals, real or rumored, and No. 3 is a list of people in entertainment who died recently. Neither of these items can be considered an achievement in any sense of the word, and I for one refuse to buy magazines or newspapers which advertise sex scandals as top news.
The only real achievement that is listed ahead of that of the Filipino singers concerns the Filipino movie industry which is also getting international recognition. I give my congratulations to the film workers as well as to the singers, including Charice. These people create a positive interest in the Philippines among us from other parts of the world.
On the whole I think this is a list that artists and audience can do well without. Or should we be thankful that Filipino journalists every now and then manage to write about the artistry of entertainers and not only about their personal lives?

OMIE, I am Filipino and I can tell you that we have a long ways to go towards mending our culture. Many decision makers in the entertainment industry and press continue to irresponsibly pander to the negative aspects of our culture simply because it makes more money for them. A precious few do the progressive and responsible thing, highlighting the positive aspects in the hope that they will be developed over time. Even the manner in which an interview is conducted (like that of Charice by Cheche Lazaro) can put emphasis on positive virtues that can go a long way, at least for those who are seeking change.
I view Charice and Arnel on the other hand, as grassroots-level change agents, who eventually get the attention of these powers-that-be, due to the popular demand they generate. Their impact though, goes beyond the entertainment business, deeply touching and inspiring people with their backstories, perseverance and solid character, and I hope the important messages of their example will not be lost on today’s youth.
Their example also brings into the limelight the plight of the Filipino, and the countless silent heroes toiling everyday trying to make ends meet for their loved ones, or directly effecting social change (as Efren Penaflorida has been recognized for recently). Hopefully all these will gain enough critical mass and momentum so as not to be ignored by the powers-that-be of the media industry.
There is always hope, and let us do our own bit to start this new decade on the right foot …
