A few weeks ago, my 5-year-old daughter asked if she could watch “Hip-Hop Charice” in the computer?… I went… Huh?… Who?… My daughter knows that I admire Charice, but I never really called nor used the term “hip-hop” to describe Charice before. Nonetheless, I was pleased that she displayed interest towards the young lady that I have found to be quite fascinating. As expressed by no less than David Foster and Oprah, Charice is undeniably talented. But beyond that, to a mother like me, Charice is a breath of fresh air.
Since my daughter has gone past the stage of watching Barney, I have found myself screening what she watches, either in the computer or on TV. Almost on a daily basis, I have been concerned about how shows, especially during primetime, are typically laden with so much sex and violence. Even some cartoons, such as Spongebob Squarepants, display behaviors and language that I find a bit disturbing. I also even wonder whether popular teen shows, such as Hannah Montana, truly convey the values and demeanor I want my child to imbibe.
Thus, amid an entertainment industry that holds much influence over the youth, it is appeasing to see that Charice could be so unpretentious and self-assured yet also be “wholesome.” To me, for a teenager to display such strength of character against various societal portrayals of what is supposedly considered “hip” and “cool,” sends a message to my child that it is alright to be who she is, regardless of what Spongebob and Hannah Montana say or do. Moreover, Charice’s display of playfulness and, to an extent, even child-like innocence, show my child the value of youth- and tell her to hold on to it as long as she possibly can. To top it off, Charice, at a very young age, has also proven that hard work and perseverance can make dreams come true, even against all odds. And despite what others have referred to as a “meteoric” rise in popularity, she remains respectful, humble, and simple.
Kids grow up fast and I know that soon I will have to let my child make her own decisions. By then, she wouldn’t need my help in pulling up anything on the computer. But for now, I am happy to know that there is at least one worthy role model my child could emulate. So, I didn’t mind when my daughter asked for me to pull up “Hip-Hop Charice” in the computer. Apparently, she saw Charice rapping in one youtube clip (Evergreen) a few months ago- which reminded her of a favorite character, ‘Hip Hop Harry.’ As she watched, I couldn’t help but smile while she giggled in delight, even though I was sure she did not really understand the words. So, after Charice’s rap, I asked my daughter, “do you want to watch another one?” – then I sat beside her and, together, we watched our Hip-Hop Charice in the clips below…

as she grows up, I think Charice will continue to be a role model for our youth because of the values her mother ingrained in her, as well as her intrinsically good and solid character. She will always be God-fearing and will never let her mother down. And this will be her guide in her “moments of truth”, and will shape her outlook in life, the way she conducts herself and how she treats others.
and DrTp, like you, after watching a Charice video, I also say: “do you want to watch another one?” – except that I am talking to myself …

DrTP, as always great article. Thanks for sharing the videos of Charice’ playfulness, I never grow tired of watching and laughing with her antics. She is indeed a role model for this “NOW” generation, so different and innocentlike, prefer her that way than being precocious.

“I want kids of this generation to see that everything is cool, that there’s some kind of unity in hip-hop. We all found something that’s really important to us, and music is all we’ve really got.”

Wow, you nailed it. You hit the core of why Charice transcends generations, and why she will ultimately be a huge success story in the coming months and years.
First, Charice’s humility in the face of all the battles she endured and won shines forth like a star from her. Tell me of another celebrity who has remained as humble, polite and gracious as Charice. I heard more than one comment from Chasters in attendance at the Vancouver Meet and Greet who said her mom should be recognized for raising such humble and polite kids. Yes, her brother Carl has the same attributes.
Second, her talent is as diverse as the universe. The videos you chose to accompany this article show that she can easily have fun with a young lad in a store whose mom, I think, could not keep from laughing at how cute Lestat is. Then here she is at the mall entertaining fans without any other props except her extraordinary talent, and gives us a “rap” song. Hip-hop is an apt title.
Watching Charice should be a required course for every six year-old, hahahahaha. The world would be a better place, I think.
