MANILA – The Philippines’ international singing sensation Charice Pempengco on Saturday thanked people for supporting Filipinos like her and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, adding that their triumphs make her feel “proud to be Filipino.”
Charice arrived in Manila on Saturday on board a Philippine Airlines flight from Los Angeles, where she finished a 10-city tour with legendary composer, David Foster.
“Kababayan, maraming, maraming salamat sa suporta di lang po sa amin pero sa lahat ng Pinoy na may talento especially kay sir Manny [Pacquiao] Pacman. Sana tuloy-tuloy lang po ang suporta. Proud to be Filipino,” Charice said.
My fellow countrymen, thank you very much for your support, not just for us, but to all talented Filipinos, especially for Sir Manny (Pacquiao) Pacman. I hope for their continued support. Proud to be Filipino,” Charice said.
Although she missed the much-awaited bout between Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto last week, Charice said she watched it on video sharing site, YouTube.
“Actually, napanood ko lang sa YouTube. Kasi nung time na lumalaban siya, may sked ako so nag abang na lang ako kung sino panalo. Then, the other day pinanood ko,” she admitted. ["Actually, I saw it on Youtube. Because during the fight, I had a schedule, so I just waited to know who won. Then, the other day, I watched it," she admitted.]
It made her even more proud when Pacquiao emerged victorious over his Puerto Rican rival.
“S’yempre, nakaka-proud. Nag usap nga kami ni Mommy, parang ang hirap talunin ni Sir Manny,” said Charice. “Yung narating ko ngayon minsan yung mga tao super proud dahil sa amin. Kung ano ang nafe-feel ng ibang tao sa akin, yun ang nafe-feel ko kay Sir Manny. National hero talaga”.
Of course, it makes me feel proud. My Mom and I actually were talking and we said that it was really hard to beat Sir Manny,” said Charice. “For instance, with what I’ve reached, it makes some people feel proud about us. Whatever it is that some people feel about me, that is also what I feel for Sir Manny. He’s really a national hero.”
She shared that while performing abroad, other nationalities notice how talented Filipinos are.
“Nakakatuwa kasi di lang mga Pinoy ang nakakapansin. Pag nagko-concert kami may mga Americans, Canadians, sinasabi nila na parang ang dami pa lang napaka-talented sa Pinas. Pag nakikita nila ako tinatanong agad sa kin si Manny Pacquiao kasi Pilipino rin,” she said
“It feels good that it is not only Filipinos who notice this. For instance in our concerts, there are Americans, Canadians, and they say that it is nice to know that there are a lot of talented people in the Philippines. Actually, when they see me, they ask me right away about Manny Pacquiao because he is also Filipino,” she said.
She believes that Pacquiao’s success helps Filipinos abroad gain recognition.
“S’yempre naman po. Patuloy sana bigyan ng karangalan ang bansa. Good luck sa darating na mga laban. Saludo po kami sa inyo,” she said
“Of course! He continues to give our country honor. I would like to wish him goodluck on his forthcoming fights. We salute you,” she said.
Mum on Pacquiao-Krista affair
When asked about the reactions of Filipinos abroad regarding the gossips linking the Pacman to sexy actress Krista Ranillo, Charice said, “Parang siguro wala lang talaga, di sila naniniwala. Ang iniisip lang yung pagkapanalo”. [I don't think there's anything said about it; they don't believe it. What they think about is his win."]
She likewise avoided giving her personal opinion on the issue. “Nakita ko lang po yun. Ayoko pong makialam dun. Ang akin lang po congratulations kay Sir Manny, yun lang,” she said. ["I just watched it. I don't want to meddle regarding that. For me, I would just like to say congratulations to Sir Manny and that's it," she said."]
Charice did not say how long she will stay in Manila, but disclosed that she will have to return to the US to finish her album after taking a break.
“Bale tatapusin ko na yung album ko. Magsho-shoot na po ng music video para maka-release na po siya, January po,” she said. “Katatapos lang po ng 10-city tour po namin with David Foster so pahinga lang po.”
“So I’ll definitely be finishing [recording] my album. I’ll be shooting for a music video so that it could already be released in January,” she said. “We just finished our 10-city tour with David Foster that’s why we are taking a bit of rest for now.”
Foster is known for “discovering” singers Celine Dion, Josh Groban, and Michael Bublé as well as working with renowned musicians like Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and others.
Charice is still uncertain about her concert schedules next year in Manila. But she was quick to add that there might be one in February in time for Valentine’s Day.
“Di ko pa po sure. Siguro sa Valentine’s magkakaron kami ng concert. Not sure pa po yung venue pero magkakaron po ng concert sa February,” she said
“I’m still not sure. Maybe we’ll have a concert for Valentine’s. We are also not sure about the venue yet, but there will be a concert come February,” she said.

Charice and Manny have a number of similarities:
- they both rose from great adversity and hardship to spectacular success
- they both have great fighting spirit (except Manny is a professional fighter)
- they both sing (except Charice is a professional singer)
- they are both humble and religious, being fully aware of of the Source of their talent and strength
- they are a source of inspiration and pride to many people, and not only in their country
It is quite natural and expected for any Filipino to feel national pride because of Manny. With this coming from Charice however (with her significant contributions to national pride), it could mean a little bit more: maybe she has a keener appreciation than other people, of Manny’s rise to success from adversity and hardship, because she has been there herself; or maybe she is glad to see another Filipino help her carry the torch of national pride, which is a great responsibility for anyone to bear.
If you look at the Filipinos who have gained international acclaim lately (including Arnel Pineda), they all share the same backstory. I would say their common “talent” is their resiliency, perseverance and fighting spirit.

Charice barely landed in Philippines and she’s already in the news. Gosh the press must have pounced on her for this interview just to get a few quotes for this article! Yet she is as gracious as ever and shows great maturity in answering their questions, and prudence in answering some other questions…
With Pacquiao making international news headlines, it’s amazing that he is currently just 4th place in the balitang america newsmaker of the year poll http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJPBkAlP9hk and ‘you know who’ is in first place – Charice! It shows the power of the chasters to promote our princess (although the contest isn’t over yet so we’ll see what happens following Pacman’s hero’s welcome home).
Back here in America, there’s another contest I want to remind you of. Please vote for Charice DAILY on the Oprah Show contest even if you don’t know what to answer for some of the questions in the 14 different categories. I didn’t either, since I don’t watch television shows but I just picked some answers at random and, guess what, it works! So even if you’re not in America, I think you’re still allowed to vote, every vote counts! Oprah has 6 million viewers. A win in this contest will do a lot more to promote Charice’s international career than a win in balitang america.
When you get to question# 13, you’ll definitely know who to pick for ‘Best Oprah Show Musical Performance’ right?
http://www.oprah.com/survey/oprahshow/20091028-orig-best-of-2009-poll
yes, i have been doing it daily with the best oprah musical show performance. even though i dont know the answers to the first 12 questions, the most important is to answer the 13th where charice is there.and dont forget to submit as it will not be complete. what about the peoples choice. was it stopped. before i also vote daily but it seems there are no more links to it. and what about the singers to watch. i have exhausted all the desktops here at the office. we can still vote but use a different unit when you vote. this is just a small sacrifice for the joy and the pleasure charice is sharing with all of us.
