David Foster Brings Friends to Newark for Hit-Filled Concert

David Foster Brings Friends to Newark for Hit-Filled Concert

The tour is called “David Foster and Friends.” And after more than 30 years as one of the pop world’s most successful songwriter-producers, Foster has plenty of friends to call on.

Peter Cetera (formerly of Chicago) and Philip Bailey (of Earth, Wind and Fire) were there when the tour hit the Prudential Center in Newark, Saturday. So were Deborah Cox, “American Idol” alumni Ruben Studdard and Michael Johns, and the quartet, the Canadian Tenors. But the closing slot went to a woman who has not released an album in the United States yet: Charice, a 17-year-old from the Philippines who is well known her own country, and is being mentored by Foster for worldwide stardom.

She has a big voice and, like another Foster protege, Celine Dion, projects a sense of steely determination when she sings. In this show, she was called on to belt out songs Foster has produced and/or co-written for divas Dion (”The Power of Love”) and Whitney Houston (”I Will Always Love You,” “I Have Nothing”), as well as her own Foster-produced single, “Note To God.” Her poise and vocal command were impressive, especially in light of her youth. She ended her memorable mini-set with “I Will Survive,” one of the few songs in the show that Foster didn’t write or produce.

As expected, it was an evening of clean-cut, immaculately crafted pop music. Foster never has been hip, but his knack for helping singers make the most of their talents — two of his recent finds are Josh Groban and Michael Buble — is beyond question.

Foster, 59, served as the show’s amiable host, and accompanied everyone on piano. At several points, he emphasized that this was the third show of his first tour, ever.

Johns sang two of Foster’s rock hits: “She’s a Beauty” and “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion),” recorded by the Tubes and John Parr, respectively. The show’s three backing vocalists, meanwhile, tackled the “West Side Story” ballad “Somewhere” (which Foster produced for Barbra Streisand) and “Got To Be Real,” his disco hit with Cheryl Lynn.

Studdard stood in for Al Jarreau (the swinging “Mornin’”) and All-4-One (the earnest “I Swear”), and brought a touch of blues grit to “Home,” a hit for both Buble and country singer Blake Shelton.

Cetera and Bailey sang some of the buttery pop-soul hits they have made with Foster, and also briefly touched on their non-Foster history — Bailey with an excerpt from “Easy Lover,” Cetera with “If You Leave Me Now.”

Foster will soon embark on his second tour, joining Andrea Bocelli to perform songs from Bocelli’s upcoming, Foster-produced holiday album, “My Christmas.” Stops will include the Izod Center in East Rutherford, Dec. 5.

I recently visited my sister ,nieces and nephews in the east coast and told them about Charice concert . To my surprise they don’t know anything about her and her concerts. That is the first time they heard about her. I told them to look her up in youtube .I took them to the concert and they love her singing. Iask her why I did not see alot of Filipinos in the concert and she said she is not well known in the east coast otherwise they would have heard her name in parties. We saw alot of caucasian and mostly above sixties and probably they watch Oprah because from their reaction it seemed that they are familiar w/ Charice. At least now I have added some fans for Charice. My niece works at State Street Bank and she told her caucasian coworkers about her and she said now almost daily ,during their breaktime they all go to youtube and listen to her. They even told her to buy them her CD. T told them to wait for next year. I think Charice needed more exposure on TV. Eastcost and midwest has a lot of Filipinos.

I beg to disagree with the comment of Granny in Vegas that Charice is not well known in the East Coast and that’s the reason why in your sister’s observation, “there were not many Filipinos in the concert.” I do not know which concert you attended. I was at the PruCenter and I roughly estimate that approximately 10-20% of the audience are Filipinos. If it were dominated by our compatriots, then she will be no more than just another Filipino entertainer trying to make it in the US, performing in lesser venues like Taj Mahal or some college auditorium and not an international star she undoubtedly is destined to be. Also, please bear in mind that DF and Friends performed at WaMu Center in NY the night before, where without a doubt, many Filipinos were in attendance.

As for the comment that Charice needs more exposure on TV. What could be a better exposure than what is being done by DF now? She is THE STAR of the 10-city tour of DF (David’s first) whose friends/performers include more established entertainers like Peter Cetera and Philip Bailey! Just think about it – Charice has YET to record an album and look at where she is now not even 2 years since the Ellen show. As proud as I am to be a Filipino, I do not thump my chest that I am proud to be one because of Charice nor do I gauge Charice success by the number of our compatriots attending her concerts. Suffice it is to say that Charice is OUR GIFT to the international entertainment world. Let us just be supportive for her continuing success.

Charice of course is well known to the west coast, but if you are in East coast, not so much for Filipinos. But the word is getting around so it is a positive thing.

I went to Mandalay bay concert in vegas, and at least in my istimation filipinos were 90 % and the rest is mixture of all race.

10-20 percent filipinos in the concert would be a temperature that Charice need more exposure in the east coast.

With that in mind, it will only take just few pinoys/pinays to get the fire going in the east coast. no worry, in due time Charice will be known around the glove, not only in the east coast.

      Hi REm,

Dont’ worry about the outfit, for sure, it is being cleaned right after the show, there are dry cleaners who serviced the hotel’s customers, or maybe she has numerous of similar outfit just like a costume. I guess it is Charice costume for the entire DF and Friends Tour Shows.

What we should worry is Charice health for the schedule is so hectic that her voice need rest so is her body.

As mentioned above, I hope Charice will join David Foster and Andrea Bocelli on their Holiday Tour to promote Bocelli’s Christmas album. I would like her to sing “Noel” and “White Christmas”.

Well let’s count…Charice has now conquered (using the word in a friendly tone) Chicago, New York, Newark, and in about one more hour she will have conquered Boston. Being an American, I surrender. This amazing talent can hold me prisoner any time, hehehe.

Hey max wouldn’t that be something. When Charice conquers the world there would’t be any wars and the word prisoners would cease to exist. I think Charice has already recorded this song. I’d say.
