Lea Salonga: A Word for Charice

Lea Salonga: A Word for Charice

Another Philippines treasure, Ms. Lea Salonga, who has been performing since she was 19 in her debut in Miss Saigon in London, England, will also kick off her musical concert tour, dubbed “Inspired Tour,” this month, with 19 concert dates starting on September 12th in Bangkok, Thailand, and ending on November 14th in Maui, Hawaii.

GMA Chicago news reporter, Joseph G. Lariosa, caught up with the 38-year old musical prodigy by phone from Manila for a brief interview. Here’s a snippet of Ms. Salonga’s remarks concerning our princess, Charice:

“A word for Charice

As to the rising international phenom Charice Pempengco, she said, ‘Charice is fantastic, wonderful, nice, nice, singer. I worked with her and she is very talented.’

When asked what piece of advice she would give Pempengco, Salonga said she should remain humble. ‘Even if a lot of people will tell her, you are the best, you are the best, and even if true, she should stay humble and not let these compliments sink into her head. And she should not forget, where she comes from.’

As to aspiring singers, Salonga’s advice is for them to love what they want to do before they become professionals. This business is fickle minded. The challenge in the profession is so great that singing career is not for the faint of heart.”

Why most of the responses did not relate to the article Lea Salonga A Word for Charice. I’m a bit disullion with advices like “should not forget where you come from”. What does that really mean? Charice from day one claimed she’s from the Philippines, she’s never wavered from this. However, should she forget where she went after and how she got there? The world has embraced Charice with the help of few selected famous talented people from USA and Canada, not from the Philippines. One should not bark after people or turned around from people who fed you to be known and be paid for the talents, becoming famous as a result. Charice should continue to nurture her talents internationally, especially in USA, and stay closer to those people who helped and influenced her singing career.

Poor Charice the way she was treated by Revillame in the 9/6/09 show in Lake Tahoe. Revillame introduced her last. She didn’t even finish her only song and Revillame cut her short. What a jerk and insensitive guy! Bastos talaga, walang modo! You should not be hosting a show at all, you are an embarassment to all us Pinoys

Charice should not let herself be used by a below mediocrity show like Wowowee. You are an international artist who is adored by Pinoys in the US and around the globe.

Charice should look for inspiration at Leah’s career. Like her, Leah never got the recognition she deserved. Sharon and Pops were more popular back then, and she seldom gets an invite from TV shows in the old days, even if she is way more talented.

She also got a lot of flak when she got the lead role in Ms. Saigon (this is before she won that award), because she was wearing skimpy clothing.

I believe if she has more mestiza features, Leah would have been the best known singer in the Philippines. But that’s Philippine entertainment.

Charice should really focus on her international career. It is the only way she can get the respect of people in the Philippines. Sad to say that a lot of people go for the looks and not talent.

Blackrose #8 asks how one finds articles like this one. I may first say that I also found this one, but apparently Eve did it before me. Here is the secret: Google News. I cannot give a link since my version of Google prefers the Norwegian language. Instead I will describe the procedure.

    1. Make a regular Google search for Charice.
    2. On the top line of the results page there is the word News (or its equivalent in your local language). Click on that word.
    3. You now have a screen with all news items about Charice from the last month. That is too many. Select instead those from the last 24 hours.
    5. Store the link you got among your bookmarks, favorites or whatever they are called by your browser.

Now you have the job set up. When you feel like it, just take a look. Perhaps there is something new about Charice. There are some other people called Charice and who also appear in the news – Charice Wang is a specialist on telecom policy (I think), and right now you may read about Charice Robinson of West Palm Beach. This is no problem. The catch is usually quite small. Then go to the “Contact us” page of Charicemania and submit the link you think is worth posting.

I think this is a better game than trying to be the first one to comment. Good luck.

Then about the post: Lea Salonga was the only Filipino artist whose name I knew before I discovered Charice. You may say that I was ignorant, and I would answer that I was not. Look up your favorite Filipino or Filipina (after Charice) in Wikipedia and check whether he or she has a biography in Dansk (Danish), Norsk(bokmål) (Standard Norwegian), Svenska (Swedish) or Suomi (Finnish).

you’re welcome KV, Noellen! Lea is a classy lady, I like her. I read she was born with a silver spoon, but she’s so down-to-earth. Probably theater life does that to you, haha. Charice’s travel schedule along with the whole DFF cast is going to be tough, living out of a suitcase and room service meals or fast food. It’s not for the faint of heart as Lea says above. Lea and Charice are two tough cookies. I’m glad they both chose and love to share their talents with the world.

That’s a good advice from Leah! Leah is professional and she has been in this industry for quite awhile. I hope Charice will remain
down to earth person and never allows fame and popularity to get the better of her. Thanks Leah for that nice piece of advice!
