Charice Fails to See Tita Cory at Wake

Charice, who arrived on Monday from the US where she recorded her first international album, went to Manila Cathedral with her mother, Raquel, early Wednesday to pay respects to the country’s first woman president. But they failed to enter the church since it was already closed to the public.

“Dadalaw nga kami at sana ay sisilip para makiramay sa dating pangulo pero nahuli na kasi kami ng dating sarado na siya sa publiko, ayon sa head ng secretariat na si Ms. Leah Navarro. Naiintindihan naman namin ‘yon kaya wala namang problema,” Mrs. Pempengco told in a telephone interview.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Charice said she fully understood why she was not allowed to see the former president at the altar.

“Hanggang pinto lang po ako, but that’s really fine, basta makarating lang po ako at malaman lang po ni Ate Kris na pumunta po ako, okay lang po sa akin yon,” Charice said.

Navarro apologized to Charice for not letting them go near the altar. She explained they were already preparing for the funeral mass. But she but vowed to tell the Aquino family, especially to actress-host Kris Aquino, youngest daughter of Mrs. Aquino, that Charice came to pay her respects.

“If you don’t mind po, kasi pini-prepare po ang simbahan, I hope you understand. Of course, certainly we will let the family know,” Navarro said.

Charice’s mom said they just came from a commercial shoot before they went to Manila Cathedral.

Charice also extended her condolences to the Aquino family. The singer said the former president’s death had affected her and her family in so many ways.

The funeral Mass started at 9 a.m. and was attended by the former President’s family and friends in and out of politics.

Cory’s rise to power was a euphoric moment for us then, and these videos of her historic speech before the US Congress show that it was a shining moment for Filipinos (I say this here not to talk about Filipino pride, but to honor the woman through whom it came):

On the third video, the memorable lines are 1:05-1:20 and 5:12-5:52.

Thank you Cory and may you rest in peace.

As an aside, the applause she got from the US Congress reminds me of this other lady who routinely generates such kind of applause …

“The reality of living life is inconstant and nobody can can say or ascertain what is forthcoming but death.”

Combining this article with that of Charice’s visit to the BIR (Bureau of Internal Revenue), we are reminded that nothing is certain but death and taxes.

The reality of living life is inconstant and nobody can can say or ascertain what is forthcoming but death. And as we are confronted
by forces around us, we are faced to make a choice that may change the situations in our lives. The subsequent results of our choices may not always be favorable and therefore, we have to step back to gain clarity of our perspective to enable our minds to have that steady purpose.
I take the view that whatever the outcome of any action taken, the intention holds the truth and is paramount.

I’m not surprised at all for all the flak Charice is getting for this – if anything, this nitpicking is an indication that she has finally “arrived”. This is a tempest in a teacup compared with the more significant and momentous event of the passing of a great figurehead who played a central role in one of the shining moments in Philippine history and national pride.

What really matters is that Cory rest in peace and that her loved ones find peace and closure as well. I’m sure that Charice and family are praying for this, and that their heartfelt condolences to the Aquino family, and especially Kris, have been conveyed to them.

The rest is fodder for the media. As Marie Antoinette supposedly once famously said, “Let them eat cake.”

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

Let it be, let it be, …..

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

I’m glad Charice had planned on paying her respects to Cory Aquino. Unfortunately, this wasn’t a drive or an hour away. From her many videos the trip from the US can take up to 15 or more hours to fly from the US. A lot could go wrong with the times and delays frequently happen.

Obviously, her schedule couldn’t guarantee her performing at the funeral. But she wanted to and tried to be there. Knowing her relationship with Kris, the last thing she would do is disrespect the Aquino family. (She never disrespects anyone – that’s not her nature or personality). I can foresee her giving a musical tribute, perhaps on B & K.

Of course, the best thing that could have happened was she perform at the funeral, and pay her respects properly like all the other Filipino stars. I guess that’s one of the differences being an international star vs a local star. But i’m sure she’s not the only one who wasn’t able to attend. Unfortunately, we don’t know when death is going to happen and to who. So to alter plans and committments cost money and schedules are difficult to change. If everything worked perfectly, she would have been there. But it did not. Did she try – absolutely. Will she be criticized for not making it, you can count on it; as someone is always waiting to find fault with anything any celebrity does, no matter what the intention.

I know in my heart, Charice and her mom tried to do the right thing, so I will give them a pass. It looks like she extended her condolences to the Aquino family, so hopefully all is ok.
