Here’s another entry in Funfare’s continuing coverage of the ongoing Hollywood Olympics in L.A., courtesy of this corner’s Hollywood “eye”:
International singing sensation Charice has paid a visit to the Westin Bonaventure to show support to Little Big Star batchmate Rhap Salazar who is currently competing in the junior singing division at the 13th World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA).
Charice, whom Rhap considers his best friend, together with a slew of Philippine showbiz figures (Boy Abunda, Kris Aquino, Luis Manzano, Sam Milby, Erik Santos, Billy Crawford, Johnny Manahan, Piolo Pascual, Rachelle Ann Go, Sarah Geronimo, Sheryn Regis, Sharon Cuneta and Korina Sanchez), provided financial aid for the young male singer to compete in the said annual event.
He also received a subsidy from Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Young performing artists from nearly 40 countries including the US and the Philippines compete for the “Grand Champion of the World” titles in dance, vocal, modeling, acting, comedy, instrumental and variety at WCOPA.
Grand finals will be held on Friday night, July 17, at the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Bonaventure.

Noellen @29….
I think I have to insert laughing and coughing under lessons to be learned. Laughing tunes up your vocal chord. Extreme and high-pitched laughs are on level with your whistle register. Try it.
Coughing prevents heart attack. It revives the pumping of your heart, enough to call 911. Try it also. You can’t sing if your heart is attacked…hahahah
Laugh and cough are part of voice tuning. Ask Charice.

I have to add to #31 that our English language skills are also a main contributor to this, as well as our adoption of Western music and culture.
Widespread poverty in our country also means that budding stars who take up singing as a way out try harder, much harder than those who live in relative ease.

One factor that contributes to the number of excellent singing talent from the Philippines is that singing contests have long been part of our culture. It must be something is us that places singing prowess up there in the list of admirable traits in a person. The introduction of the Karaoke years back extended the opportunity of testing one’s singing mettle in public to practically everyone. The newer digital versions of the Karaoke, with hundreds/thousands of songs stored in a compact, portable design only furthered this. Here in Canada, you can hardly go to any Filipino get-together where there is no karaoke singing.
As such, our standard for singing excellence is quite high. I realized this when we had a formal event here with a lot of non-Filipino guests. We had some Filipino guest singers who sang a few English and Tagalog songs, and although their performance was excellent, we expected that, since they were guest singers; otherwise, they should have no right to guest at such an event.
The non-Filipinos however, were incredulous as to the singers’ level of talent, applauding profusely and giving standing ovations. They probably wondered why we remained seated and practically went “ho-hum” as we applauded and continued to eat. It is understandable then that Charice was surprised at the standing ovations she got in the USA, but she is at an entirely different level altogether.
Crucially, we have entire generations of people with above-average singing talent, just requiring further development or polishing to be world-class, and that one big chance to break into the international scene.
Well, we have the newest version of the Karaoke that reaches millions instantly, that can provide this chance – the Internet and YouTube.
Like e-commerce, the internet and web-based video sharing cut through the middlemen of the entertainment industry and talent search, and go straight from producer to consumer.
And web-based social sites like ChariceMania only further develop a star’s following and momentum.
hence, we will be talking about the next Charice or Arnel Pineda, in the way they break through into the international scene (they do not need to sing in Tagalog though, as some old foggies think …)
