I haven’t seen a concert in a long, long time. A lot of things have become predictable even when there’s so much effort not to be. This is not to trivialize the enormous talent of our concert artists, it’s actually about me who has packaged, managed singers and produced concerts on the side for a long, long time. It can be boring. And the only way to kill boredom is to stay out of it and comeback with new, fresh, unadulterated energy.
This is how I felt when I went to Charice’s concert at SMX last Saturday with my friend Melo Esguerra who is now editorial consultant for the magazines of another good friend Emil Yap. We entered the cavernous SMX Hall which is sadly one level and which makes it uncomfortable for concert audiences who have to stretch their necks to get a glimpse of the performer on stage, in the company of Star Records “stars” Annabelle Regalado-Borja, Jonathan Manalo, Rox Santos and the unsinkable Nixon Sy, gorgeous Garlic Garcia who joined us in the front row. Thank you for the tickets Annabelle.
The day before the concert, I was actually looking for tickets to buy and I wanted the most expensive because I wanted to support Charice. I feel that the least we can do for this “most talented girl in the world,” according to Oprah is to buy her CDs and tickets to her show.
Her success is ours and she has fulfilled the dream of many. Her triumph is of national importance.
When she sang in Ellen, we all wept with joy. When Oprah hugged her, we too embraced the wealthiest woman in global television. She has opened doors. It won’t be long before others will go though these open doors to sing, dance or act for the world.
This is how important Charice is to every Filipino who loves to sing, dance and act. This diminutive lass from Laguna has tucked under her belt a gargantuan feat. Charice excites me because what many dreamt of achieving, she conquered without a drop of blood.
It happened without a scientific, calculated career plan. It happened because she worked hard and she was born to be. Charice belongs to the global arena and she carries the Filipino spirit with her.
When Ellen said there “was this girl who traveled all the way from the Philippines to perform in her show,” the mere mention of the Philippines made our hearts leap with joy and pride. That was a huge promo for this much maligned country.
I never thought a Filipino girl would actually sing a duet with Celine Dion at the Madison Square Garden — not in this wired lifetime. Thank you Ellen, Oprah, David, Andrea, Paul, Josh, Alicia, Celine for believing in Charice — a true Filipino talent.
Back to the concert. The theater was jampacked. People were squabbling for seats. There was a mild commotion but this was fixed before anyone engaged in a hair pulling incident.
Then the Triggerman’s voice boomed to announce it was five minutes to showtime. You could smell the euphoria in the air. Then the journey began. I was happy I was there.
Bravo, Charice!

I pray Mr. Boy Abunda will be taken by Charice as her Phil. manager for she is in good hands with him…a Chaster by heart who is there to defend and protect her as this article proves her objective opinion of the concert and he had his tv declaration that the concert was a HUGE SUCCESS.
God’s hands are with Charice as she is destined to where she is now..this is my favorite line of Boy Abunda’s article:
“It happened without a scientific, calculated career plan. It happened because she worked hard and she was born to be. Charice belongs to the global arena and she carries the Filipino spirit with her.”
Yes, she was born to be..it is her destiny..Charice ignited that Filipino spirit is passed along to other nations and we are thankful to God for we were given chance to be in global arena in the field of musical entertainment where we Filipinos excel…a feeling we enjoyed too in every fight of Manny Pacquiao…in every journey of Arnel Pineda…in the truimph of Lea Salonga. Charice was given a big task by God and we Chasters must be there for her wherever her endeavours is.
Chao and good health always to all global chasters.

Eve@43:
Like it is for everyone, it is not the destination, but the journey that matters. Charice continues to deal with her detractors, and like everyone, she will continue to encounter challenges all throughout her life.
Knowing about the ridicule, insult and hurt that she had to put up with early on gives one a greater appreciation for her solid character – she is never vindictive, and always positive and humble – a great example for all of us, especially the youth. The criticisms will continue to come, which will only highlight her character even more.
Right now, everyone is singing praises for her, but I’m sure there are crabs out there lurking in our midst who are just waiting for her to stumble, in order to pull her down – such is life …
But no matter the situation, her gift always cuts through all these distractions like a flaming sword, to touch our hearts and souls with messages of beauty, hope, inspiration and cheer. That is the message, and the essence about her.

Thank you LoloLando. Nice to know at least 1 person read my comment! haha I hope to see less reminders about the negative past and more positive about Charice’s soaring future! I can’t wait to buy her CD and see her performing here in USA as the queen of standing ovations!

Hello Eve,
I empathize with your frustrations. But CHARICE is unique in that the negatives thrown to her were converted into “bullets” of inspirations and rained down against her detractors with songs never before heard of such passion and beauty that one could not resist being enamored to a beautiful and blessed soul.
Eve, let us all “follow her example.” I now call her demeanors as the “Wisdom of CHARICE”.

you know, if I didn’t read it in these pages (and elsewhere), I would have never known about the “ridicule” and “insults” that Charice put up with. I see nothing but positive regard for Charice in the Philippines media nowadays. Sure, the concert was not well-organized, but sounds like it was put together too hastily, not enough rehearsal and prep to get the best musicians, dancers, costumes, combined with incompetence maybe. But not due to disregard for Charice, just they were clueless.
I’ve never heard Charice say a bad thing about anyone, so why can’t people follow her example, just forgive them. It’s past and she has respect now, and constantly dredging it up just makes her detractors resentful probably and self-fulfilling. Not to mention the fans reading these pages will think badly of Filipinos’ pettiness and, worse, will feel sorry for Charice. Heck, if I were Charice, I’d feel sorry for myself reading all that.
Guess what I’m saying is, it’s a real downer to read negative. Maybe she hasn’t won everyone over yet in PI, but the way to do it is with love, not talking about how bad they “used to” treat her. But in spite of all that past, Charice always handles herself with such grace and generosity of spirit, never showing any resentment. Again, this young 17-year old is an example for us to follow. I suspect everyone who has ever tried to achieve stardom has had failures along the way and detractors, so it’s nothing new. No need to be bitter about it. Be professional and move on.
Charice should be rightly proud of all the honors received of late in her country, and ecstatic to be guesting in all these shows. So let’s just assume that her hosts are sincere in their praise and adulation, and not keep reminding everyone and telling new Chasters about past insults and humiliation. Charice deserves that.

To Mr. Boy Abunda, we cannot thank you enough for your support and sincere appreciation for Charice. Thank you for recognizing her gifted and special talent which most Filipinos in the entertainment world took for granted. With you on her side, who needs those people who now want to ride on her carriage to the peak of her super stardom.
To our little darling and charming Charice, God bless and wishing you continued success and happiness. Just remember that for every ridicule and insult that come your way, there is a magnitude of love and support from us to counter balance and even outweigh all the intrigues.
To Falsevoice, we owe you the pleasure and joy we experience when we listen and watch Charice. Thank you for posting her video on You Tube which catapulted her career into the likes of Oprah, David Foster, Ellen Degeneres, etc.
