Response to Max, comment#19: There is no double standard here. For me, Arnel Pineda, his manager or even the award can speak all the English they want but won’t bother me coz I’m not addicted to them. I had not opened a YT of AP the last 12 months. It’s sad Philippine society is bias toward the national language. If one speaks English well, he/she is seen as an educated and above middle class. If one speaks only national language, he/she is seen as lacking education and below middle class.

In Japan, a Japanese celebrity is impolite if speaking in English during an interview. Most likely, celebrity will be outcast and will never have an interview in the future.

Back to Charice (angel). Filipinos are very lucky to have angel on their side. By speaking PI language, she’s showing her love to Filipino fans and country inspite of early adversities. She’s trying to reach the lower strata of society who could not speak English well. Of course when she’s in US, she speaks English to show her love to American fans and US and tries to reach mainstream audience. She is really an inspiration and idol to all.

Blackrose, thanks for that interesting and illuminating background information about some of the cultural reasons why Charice may be more comfortable with tagalog when speaking to fellow Filipinos.

As with any young person but especially for her since she’s so smart, Charice’s supple 17 year old brain is quite capable of soaking up new knowledge like a sponge, and by 19 or 20 I predict she’ll be speaking English with no difficulty and very little accent.

I’m charmed even when Charice speaks tagalog, a language which is totally incomprehensible to me. There’s just something about her that makes me smile no matter what she’s doing. Her growth as an artist and the mastery of her craft count more to me than the language issue, which I’m sure with just a little application from her will work itself out in the next year or so.

    Congratulations!

Charice looks so beautiful in this gown. I think this kind of evening dress, a flowing gown instead of a baloon type fits her more. Well, that’s for my eyes delight.

All of you have excellent points… I’m not really proud to say it and I’m not speaking for all of us Filipinos but a good lot of us have the so called “crab-mentality” to the extent that they’d find even the tiniest of things to criticize eg. speaking another language in your native country. As Charice progressed with lots of detractors compared to Arnel, she has to be cautious in whatever she does and Maybe her speaking in Filipino is one of her choices to fulfill that. Everything set aside, Charice needs to always speak in English outside of her country even if she’s being interviewed in Filipino. Just my opinion. :)

I understand that some celebrities like Shakira speaks in her native language when she is in her home country and she also can speak English anytime if she wants. But, as for our princess, it is a bit complicated. The problem is her meteoric rise in only just two years from a humble beginning to where she is right now, hobnobbing with the superstars of the music industry.

That means that she is also being watch, not only by Pilipino fans in the Phils. but possibly by people from around the world whether non tagalog speaking Pilipinos or foreigners. So, it is imperative that Charice must be able to communicate in the acknowledge universal language for the sake of her journey to that so called stardom.

I observed, that she was speaking in Taglish in response after accepting her award. So she is almost there. She will just have to make a concerted effort and replace those Tagalog words with English ones. Of course, it may not be that easy. But for Charice, I think the best and the fastest way to achieve competency in that language is to associate herself with native English apeakers, prefarably, those of her own age. Just like that young girl she was with during that LV chasters gathering. And since her family are with her wherever she is nowadays, they might as well do the same, learning it with Charice. Lastly, even if she does not plan to move permanently to the States for now, she must at least find a way to stay a little longer while there.

Like I said earlier, she has no choice but to learn to speak English now or as soon as she could. She is rising so fast, her international fans requires her to do so. Remember princess other than your amazing voice and other talents, your FANS are the ones that pushes you up, all the rest can only guide you. Therefore, as far as fans are concerned, the more you have the better and if they are coming from all over the globe with varied nationalities and ages, even merrier. Thanks

    LoloLando,

could be that the award is for artists only, which puts Manny P. in a different category for his achievements in sports. But yes, he certainly deserves a similiar type award.
