Charice’s ma fights back, defends daughter

std 20090505 tvpatrol1 500 5 0001 pacmancharice 75x75 Charice’s ma fights back, defends daughter The mother of international singing sensation Charice has criticized the National Historical Institute (NHI) for dragging the name of her daughter into the issue of proper rendition of “Lupang Hinirang.”

Note: English translation in orange text.

“Kasi kung tutuusin, hindi naman sa sinisilip ko, pero mas madami ang kumanta ng mas palpak. Hindi naman palpak si Charice. Ang ginawa niya lang ay tinaasan niya lang at saka bumagal ng konti pero wala siyang palpak doon sa kinanta niya unlike doon sa kumanta na pumiyok pa,” Racquel Pempengco said.

“In all frankness, not that I’m finding fault but there are many more who’ve failed to sing it properly. Charice was not a failure. All she did was raise the key and slow it down but she wasn’t a failure, unlike others who sang it and went flat.”

Charice, dubbed as the “most talented girl in the world” by popular US television host Oprah Winfrey, sang the country’s national anthem during the “Myx Mo” concert last year.

Following her performance, the pint-sized singer received an e-mail from the NHI reprimanding her purportedly because her singing of “Lupang Hinirang” was incorrect.

Charice said she replied and apologized to the NHI.

“Hindi naman sila sumagot so nakalimutan ko naman ‘yon… Naiintindihan ko naman po sila kasi iba po ang Pilipinas sa States. Sa States po kasi kahit pataasin mo ‘yan, okay lang ‘yan. Naiintindihan ko sila kasi dito parang very nationalistic ang pagkanta ng ‘Lupang Hinirang,’” Charice said.

“They didn’t reply so I forgot all about it… I do understand where they’re coming from because it’s different in the Philippines compared to the US. I understand them because here the singing of (the Philippine national anthem) tends to be nationalistic.”

For “Mommy Racquel,” however, her daughter should not be blamed for the incident, saying the singer was merely following the arrangement done by the organizers of the event.

“Depende kasi ‘yon sa nago-organize. Tinatanong kasi muna namin kung paano ang pagkanta. ‘Ano po ba ang kakantahin?’ [Ang sagot sa amin] ng organizers. ‘yong katulad ng kinanta mo doon sa boxing sa Araneta.’ Ganoon din ‘yong kinanta. Sumusunod lang siya,” the mother said.

“It depends on who organizes it. Before anything we ask first how it’s supposed to be sung. ‘What do we sing?’ [The organizers reply] ‘like what you sang at that boxing match at Araneta.’ That’s how she sung it. She’s just following directions.”

She also lamented that it seemed like the NHI had singled out her daughter.

“Bakit ‘yong [pumiyok] hindi nila nabigyan ng notice at hindi nila in-announce [na mali ang pagkanta]? Pero si Charice ina-announce nila at si Christian Bautista,” the mother said.

“How come those who sang off-key weren’t given notice nor attention called to their improper singing? Yet, they cite Charice and Christian Bautista.”

The proper way of singing “Lupang Hinirang” recently became a big issue following the “incorrect” rendition of the national anthem by Concert King Martin Nievera during the May 2 fight of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas.

NHI disclosed that it also called the attention of Charice, Bautista and Jennifer Bautista to the supposed incorrect rendition of the national anthem.

According to Section 37 of Republic Act 8491, the rendition of the national anthem, whether played or sung, shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe.

Section 20 of the law also states: “The rendition of the flag ceremony in official or civic gatherings shall be simple and dignified and shall include the playing or singing of the anthem in its original Filipino lyrics and march tempo.”

RA 8491 prescribes that any person who will violate its provisions may be punished by a fine of at least P20,000 or imprisonment of not more than one year.

I have heard “Lupang Hinirang” sang in different arrangements. A recent example is Martin Nievera’s rendition on Pacquiao-Hatton fight. Did NHI call the attention of Martin Nievera? Have NHI called the attention of all the thousands of singers who sang different versions? Can the NHI just get the attention of the organizers in private? Is it written on Section 37 to get the attention in public? In my opinion NHI looks bad in this incident. It appears that they want to ride in the popularity of Charice and at the same time collect money. There are more issues to address in the Philippines than just listening to all the “Lupang Hinirang” renditions and collecting money from the incorrect way of singing it.

Concern America, Thank you for support. Chasters, sorry for my ballistic comments. I cannot resist defending our angel.

NHI did the classic “hulidap” (catch violators for money). Since angel had already some resources, it’s time for the vultures to feed. Recommend NHI test first all politicians (pols) if they can sing PI national anthem IAW law. If pols fail, NHI should send them to prison. Then go after aspiring pols, teachers, students and all others for not singing the anthem correctly. After all tests, NHI should be prepared to jail at least 10,000,000 Filipinos. NHI must be fair and equal to all and not discrimate against hapless singers.

If not able to jail a lot, at least pols are very acceptable for prison time. Charice (angel) had done a lot for the Philippines by blasting her way to American music scene single-handedly through hard work, honesty, sheer talent, diamond throat, perseverance and always no non-sense perfomance. With her, Filipinos were put again on world map and not for evil deeds.

We hope Filipinos can emulate their angel to improve their lives and future. But first, get rid of corrupt politicians and it’s alter ego, NHI.

    MILESOKA ….. got your point.
    Thanks!!!

You better to abolished that NHI!!! Wanna know why better watch corruption in your country. You can correct person in a subltle way. Charice is a public figure and please do not make stain on her heart. My point is not dragging Charice name on the public. You guys are shameful. You are not protecting your treasure but rather putting her clean intention to jeopardy.

One of the main reason a person has to be respected is to give respect. So if you guys are valuing Charice name on the planet please behave. If you want to reprimand her call her attention in your office. But not putting her on the news paper and so forth and so on.

I believe one of your intention to drag Charice name is to make her life bitter again!

I am concern of charice because nobody has ever right to step her life that way.

  4. Hey says:

To folks saying that during the Spanish Era people who sang the national anthem was persecuted: FALSE.

During the Spanish Era the national anthem was not an anthem but rather a marching band instrumental (==” ).

The national anthem had no lyrics during the First Philippine Republic, which is after the Spanish Independence. It was only 2 years after the independence that the lyrics was created.

During the first Philippine Republic, our anthem was basically an instrumental in honor of the country, it was later on that someone decided to combine the poem written by Jose Palma and the marching band tune combined.

The national anthem wasn’t even in Tagalog in the first place, it was in Spanish.
