L.A. Dispatch: Leeza and Olivia Together, One Night Only

Olivia Newton-John and Leeza Gibbons
NBC, ABCOlivia Newton-John and Leeza Gibbons

Three seemingly indestructible totems of the 1980s – Leeza Gibbons, Olivia Newton-John and the Beverly Hills restaurant Mr. Chow – are combining forces to offer something Hollywood didn’t know it needed: another Oscar night party.

Ms. Gibbons, who became famous as a host on “Entertainment Tonight,” will host the “Leeza Gibbons Oscar Night at Mr. Chow” on Feb. 22, along with Ms. Newton-John and the composer David Foster, a three-time Oscar nominee in the best song category (“The Karate Kid II”). The evening – to be streamed live on various Web sites, including Variety.com and Glam.com — will feature a 10-course meal and an auction of travel packages. The twist: it’s for a philanthropic good cause.

Performing at Mr. Chow, a fading power lunch spot now that CAA and ICM are no longer nearby, will be Thelma Houston, a Grammy Award-winning R&B singer, and somebody named Charice Pempengco, billed as a “YouTube phenomenon” by organizers. Part of the night will be devoted to honoring those noted celebrity philanthropists including Suzanne Somers, Jessica Biel, Mario Lopez and Jane Seymour.

Another component: In response to the economic slowdown, the event has committed to hire several newly jobless Angelenos to work the event. To get them ready for the night (and for their job hunt), Ms. Gibbons has joined with “Extra” to give them access to a life coach, a career counselor — and hair and make-up stylists. The makeovers (professional and otherwise) will appear on “Extra” and Extra.com.

Tickets cost $1,500 for the dinner, Oscar telecast viewing and afterparty, with money going to Alzheimer’s disease and cancer charities backed by Ms. Gibbons and Ms. Newton-John. For those who have dinner plans or are attending the ceremony but who no longer make the cut at the slimmed-down Vanity Fair affair, tickets for just the afterparty run $500.

Here’s a video of Charice singing “Listen” at the Leeza Gibbons Oscar Charity party. It’s a video by someone in the audience, so you’ll get to here a lot of the crowd cheering. Plus some of David Foster’s reactions.

  2. Old man in Europe says:

Charice is not perfect – but neither was Beethoven, Rembrandt,
Shakespeare or Michelangelo, to mention a few European cultural heroes.
When I recently saw Charice’s interview on Phil Bolsta’s blog made in 2007 just before she appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show, I was impressed by her command of the English language. Few teenagers from Continental Europe would do so well. Of course it helps that
English is an official language of the Philippines and that English seems to be not only a school subject but also the teaching medium.

One other thing. What I wish for Charice in addition to a successful
singing career is that she gets some time off to be the 16-year old that she really is. – The Swedish singer Carola (Häggkvist) who had her greatest hit in 1983 when she was 16 selling more than 1 million copies of her first album in a language spoken by about 8 million people recently told that this was the most difficult aspect of starting her singing career so early.

‘You know’ Caroline Kennedy said those words many many times during her interview or was it a press conference 2 months ago. Caroline used those words just about in every sentence, about 100 times. So, that’s no big deal or should be an issue if Charice or anyon else should use the ‘you know expression. Communication wise, Charice is doing just fine and will get better just watch. A little accent, I think, makes her more authentic and appreciated by most people. She is truly gifted and loved by millions (me included) for her extraordinary singing talent & humility and not for anything more.
    Best regards to you Charice.

Congrats Charice on your performance. And on your interview, I think you handled it well but maybe next time take your time in answering questions. You’re smart and I really admire you. I couldn’t imagine myself in your place, I might run away from the interviewers…hehehe…you’re really unique!

Ian, I’ll take you up on the drink. However, tennis shoes here are NOT appropriate unless somebody is trying to project a teeny image, and I don’t think most of Charice’s fans want that.

Constructive criticism is not a bad thing. It provides positive feedback, whether in business or entertainment.

Chasters are vehement in their support and I consider myself a true fan as well. Things that are right need to be praised and things that could be better need to be pointed out.

On second thought, let’s have two.

I know as CHarice fans, it’s hard to not give opinion. Good or bad. I guess that’s how fan forum works. I feel you, however, I think we should just go along for the ride. Follow her journey. Charice is in good hands with her management. They know where to take her career to be more succesful. Although we might be critical and express how we feel, let me ask if Charice have dissapoint? Everything we want for our little princess will come in time. Please be patient. I truly believe her handlers are professional, experienced, and knowledgeable on how to market Charice. So ChArice has always surprised me and haven’t been dissapointed. I say let’s just go for the ride, support, and enjoy everything that’s happening for her now and future. Let’s all have a drink, relax, enjoy, and keep supporting Charice for what it may because I believe in her.

Charice, I also love to see your interview vids. One of my favorites was that one in LAX, your first interview in the US. You’re a great observer. You are thankful and gracious. You don’t need to try to learn fast because you already are a fast learner. And because you’re young, we can just imagine how you’d handle future interviews, especially red carpet ones. As a foreign young new artist, you did great here. I drink to that. Ian, Max, let me join you guys, let’s drink for Charice success. Cheers!

    Great answers Charice!

Actually Filipinos are known for using “you know” and the “ummmm” and the “ahhhhhh”. After all its our second language, and its given that people who just came from the islands, translate everything in thier head still. Being careful that the wrong words or pronounciation comes out.

Give her 3 months of being able to practice it until she “dreams in english” then those phrases disappears.

And that’s coming from my own experience when I first came here 2 and a half decades ago.

OK, I’m not being derogatory but…..consider this fan feedback.

Charice was wearing the same outfit for the interview that she wore when she performed later that night. Every other lady interviewed was dressed to the hilt. Why didn’t Charice wear an evening dress? She could have changed before she performed. My point is that ABS-CBN pays more attention to her wardrobe than her American team does. Are they trying to project an image for a teen audience here?

Lest there be another misunderstanding, it is the after party of the awards night, folks, not the awarding ceremony. So, though we want so much Charice to be seen on TV on the awards night, I guess it’s not this year yet, maybe next year.

In my view, Charice is not a property of the world, she is no one’s property. She is her own person. The world is simply blessed by what Charice has to offer and I am glad Charice shares her voice to everyone irrespective of nationalities or boundaries.

doer, actor, worker – a person who acts and gets things done; “he’s a principal actor in this affair”; “when you want something done get a doer”; “She’s a miracle worker”
self-starter – an energetic person with unusual initiative

    2. powerhouse – a team considered to be the best of its class-
