Charice Set To Dazzle Crowd at Obama’s Inaugural Ball–YES, SHE CAN!

shepard fairey barack obama2 75x75 Charice Set To Dazzle Crowd at Obamas Inaugural Ball YES, SHE CAN!Earlier this evening, Charicemanians gathered in front of their computers and watched a live feed of the Wowowee show in the Philippines where Charice announced that she will sing at Obama’s Inaugural Ball!!! Now, I am one of those who missed the live feed and so there is a part of me that wants confirmation. But you should have seen the frenzy that ensued at the Community Chat room!  My eyeballs were twirling every which way trying to follow the conversation, but just about everyone was posting the same message:  Charice Obama Confirmed!!! I am somewhat holding my breath here waiting for the video. Where is nighhawk23 when you need her?

Sigh.

KV

OK, here’s a5sk1ck’s video (with English subtitles). Yes, she talks about attending an inaugural ball on the 18th! So yes,  by the sound of it, she will indeed sing for the President-Elect!  Thanks a5sk1c ! More videos will be posted as they become available.

  8. When I was growing up in the Philippines in the 50’s and 60’s
we used to sing “GOD BLESS AMERICA” during flag ceremonies in front of the school. We do that after reciting “Pananatang Makabayan” and singing the Philippine National Anthem.
That’s why I know pretty well how to sing “GOD BLESS AMERICA”.
That’s right its’ no big deal for Charice to sing GBA… What’s wrong
    with you people.
Let’s hope and pray Charice performance be a memorable one.
We, Filipinos will be proud of her.

  9. It’s up to Charice to decide if she want’s to be an American
citizen… She has all the opportunities to become one.
I’ve been living here in the US for 30 years now and still go
back to the Philippines for a visit. There’s no place like home.
Someday soon, I will go back in my country of birth to stay for
good. Prime may be right, not everyone wants to be a US citizen. But many Filipinos here in America when they become citizen change their attitude and seems to hate the country where they came from.
I don’t hate the Philippine government. I hate the people that run
the government. We have perfect constitution patterned after the US.
In the meantime, let’s hope and pray Charice performance at Obama’s
inaugural will be a memorable one.
Filipinos will be proud of her.
More power to you CHARICE !!!

What’s the big deal with Charice’s singing GBA? Hello, her handlers know what’s good for her. Oprah was behind Charice’s participation in this pre inagural event. Charice’s has a lot of American handlers, if they think that it’s not proper for Charice to sing GBA they never would give the blessings for her to sing it. They know better. This is a promotion for Charice as she is being prepared to be a force in the music business. Remember that it one interview it was revealed by Charice herself that she will have a TV show in the US produced by Oprah. People, let’s trust Oprah’s decisions. I’m sure a lot of other singers lobbied to be the one to sing GBA, but because of Oprah, it was our beloved Charice who was given the HONOR to sing the song.
Again, what’s the big deal? I am waiting with anticipation for the upload(hopefully someone would). Charice again, I know you won’t disappoint. You will make us proud again. Go Go Go Girl. GOD is behind you.

This is a proud day for Charice. It should also be a proud day for all her fans, Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike.

Let’s watch her performance with an open mind. Is there a down side? There shouldn’t be but some people, for whatever reason, will look for and dwell on any negative they can find. To me this is a waste of time, but you can’t please everyone.

Charice, you are amazing and to be where you are right now has put a smile on my face from ear to ear. I look forward to your next “wowwer”. Continue to inspire. You are truly one of the great wonders of the world.

I really don’t understand all the hoopla about her singing GBA I think the song fits her perfectly after all this is the country that opened up all the opportunities and success that she is having now she was a nobody before she was invited by Ellen and then Oprah both are highly rated American Shows. Thanks to America she is realizing her dreams and what perfect way to give thanks by singing this song in a very historical event the swearing in of it’s very first African American President. Charice when you sing this song tonight you will be my voice and the voice of millions of immigrants giving thanks to the Greatest Nation on Earth these United States of America God bless her and her new President.

My kids are US citizens, but I cannot get myself to give an oath and renounce my Filipino citizenship. I hate the Philippine government, but that does not mean I don’t love the Philippines.

  15. kyotovisitor says:

    Hello Everyone,

I’m writing this as I go so my apologies if my points are not neatly tied together, but just had to jump in here. Here goes:

    ————

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” (Juliet, from Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet”)

Some of us are familiar with that story, right? Romeo and Juliet fall in love, but because they come from two warring families, are doomed from the start. Does anyone remember how the story ends? Yup, tragedy.

So you ask: What’s that got to do with Charice? Or Charice singing God Bless America at the “We Are One” concert? (I’m assuming she is singing at that one.)

    I say, plenty.

When you meet someone new, what’s the first thought that goes through your head? Does it go like this? White, Black, Filipino, American, Male, Female, Charicemanian, Divanantic, Poor, Rich, Young, Old, Ugly, Beautiful? (There’s more to that list, by the way.)

What’s my point? You ask (exasperated now).

    OK, ok, I’m getting there.

Each word is a label we attach to someone or a one we identify with. With each label, come our ideas of what it means to be whatever it is we think we are. More importantly, each label separates one from the other. There is a me and them view. Thus each word divides.

There is nothing wrong with our ideas as long as we hold on to them lightly. More importantly, as long as we can see them for what they are: A limited view.

When we’ve tagged someone as American, Filipino (substitute any word from the list or your own here), we’ve basically put that person in a box. Inside our ideas of what a Filipino or American is and can do.

May I suggest something here: When we run into someone/something new, try dropping our ideas of what should or should not occur and instead allow ourselves to be surprised by what is about to transpire? Something like: Wow. Charice is singing God Bless America. Hmmm… I wonder what that’s going to be like. I think I’ll watch it. I don’t know exactly how I’m going to feel considering that I’m not entirely sure this is a good idea.

You may still not like it, but at least you gave yourself a chance to be surprised.

I for one am excited. Especially if she’s singing at the We Are One concert. You see, I’m dreaming that the ‘WE” refers to ALL INHABITANTS OF PLANET EARTH, not just humans, let alone Americans. It is my view that ONLY when we think of ourselves as ONE that issues like global warming, for instance, can be truly addressed.

OK, I hope someone uploads a video of her performance. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to watch. I am on contemplative retreat this weekend.

    Check in with you later!

    Wishing you all the best,

    KV

Give it to Filipino-Americans to make a big deal out of “God Bless America” being sung by a non US citizen. All Black or Caucasian I talk to don’t care and even think that her voice match the song. She is not singing the national anthem.

And she is technically in the immigrant category now. Since she is working here in the US.

  17. When I was growing up in the 1950’s … I was in grade school
(grade’s 1,2,3 and so forth) in my hometown of Lucban, Quezon
province. Students will gather in front of the school and recite “Panatang Makabayan” followed by the singing of “National anthem”
and the last song we sing after that is “God Bless America”. The war
was still fresh in the minds of all Filipinos during those days. We
sing GBA every morning before entering the school rooms. This is to
show how we love America so much after the war. We sing GBA though
    we live in the Philippines.
I really don’t know … if it is true that our Charice will sing
GBA through the request of Obama’s staffer… that’s their choice,
we can’t do anything about it. I hope Americans will understand.
And I hope too, that Charice will reconsider to be an American
citizen in the future (if not soon).
Right now I’m happy that Charice will be part of Obama’s
inauguration. This will be a big exposure for her.
    God Bless Charice !!!

Well as many of you know my personal opinion on Charice singing GBA, I have to agree with the numerous posts in here by American Chasters. Although we can’t do anything about it now since its Obama’s staffers who actually requested that song to be sang in the event, Smoke sums it up in 1 big magnanimous words, No matter how you cut it “It is wrong in so many levels”

I mean GBA is not a commercial song that should be taken lightly and especially by us Filipinos. It’s a sacrilage for somebody to sing it in such a public and historical event where your not even a citizen or an immigrant of USA. Just read though its lyrics:

    God Bless America,
    Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

Now no wonder American chasters are up in arms, ready to plow hammers and mallets over the head of those Obama’s staffer for even requesting Charice to sing this song in PUBLIC.

Yes Celine sang this first during Tribute to Heroes in 2001 (after 9/11) but she sang it as an American patriot (having lived in the US of A for a decade).

Lots of Filipinos treat this song (especially back in PI) as another commercial song which clearly is not, hence thier affinity at having Charice sing this in a BIG American EVENT.

It’s not all showing off singing prowness, Charice might well outsang every single Americans who have sang this song especially on the high notes but the song is not about reaching high notes and holding it forever but as Smoke says in his/her blog:

“It’s a song that is so steeped in American tradition and sentiment that, one would think, it is a song that only an American should sing. Or a foreigner wanting to become an American.

After all, what is she supposed to sing? God Bless America, land that you love, your home sweet home?”

This is one of those occasions that the negative commentary will actually far outweighs the positive commentary and it won’t be the other way around I can tell you that right now.

I would have been happier if the 2nd song that was requested is “I believe” by Fantasia which also fits the occasion and Charice’s journey.

BTW im not a party pooper, I’m just letting everybody know of my opinion in the matter in support of our American chaster friends the likes of CSJ, Smokes, etc. etc.

Like I said nothing we can’t do about it since Obama’s staffer are the ones who requested her to sing that song. Picture her being introduce on stage:

And Now The Internet Sensation from the Republic of the Philippines singing “God Bless America”.

Well pre inaguration is less than 24 hours, I guess we shall all see and hear by tonight.

Hi patsrick. First, happy new year to you and your family; as well as to all charicemanians.

Unfortunately, criticism is going to come no matter what. If it’s not the song, it would be the hair, the dress, … whatever. But she has to sing GBA no matter what. President Obama has requested it and so it shall be. Charice will do a magnificent rendition and the positive reviews will far outway the negatives; as usually happens. She will get so much exposure from this and will garner many more fans. Sure there will be negative comments but these usually come from people who are jealous or envious.

When your on top you are always a target. It’s all how you handle the critics. Charice will have to develop a thick skin because there are some terrible people just waiting for her to stumble. She has to realize she is making millions happy with her music, touching people’s lives in a positive way, and has to shake off unwarranted negative comments.

I predict she’ll be fine. Take care patsrick.

I agree with you on this one ‘narehab ako.’ I’m guessing you saw the recent TV Patrol news. Also to add, after her performance, when needed and/or appropriate, she also needs to do a proper bow or any proper gesture of thank you to her audience. In some scenarios, it may not be necessary I guess. But every time she does perform for an exclusive group of A-listers and high profile people, I think it’s good to do so. She does say thank you and she does bow, but she does it hastily (from what I observed in some of her performances). Although, I know that she doesn’t mean any disrespect. I think she still has yet to identify the proper conventions for different situations/scenarios. After all, she is young and she still has a lot to learn. I am confident, however, that she’ll get the knack of things.

I watched Oprah Fridays Live today and I saw the updated ad for the Oprah show on Monday, the 19th. Also, as the show was about to end, she talked briefly about what’s in store for Monday.

Oprah said that she asked David Foster and Will.I.Am to write a song for this historic occasion. She mentioned that the song is called, “An American Dream.” And as she was talking all about this, they played a video of David Foster and Will.I.Am working in a recording studio; there was a group of kids in the studio, too (probably the choir). It was a very short clip, but I’d like to see it again. I think I saw Bono in the recording studio, too. I’m not sure; I’ll have to watch the rerun of today’s show again later.

Anyhow, the new ad or preview for Monday’s show is up on Oprah’s site. There’s a preview on youtube in the Oprah channel for the show on Monday, but that one isn’t updated yet. The new one mentions some of the guests for Monday, and this time it mentions TWO world premieres, not one.

“From the Kennedy Center, Monday… Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Forest Whitaker, David Foster, Usher, Scarlett Johansson, Kerry Washington, Luke Russert, Anderson Cooper, Seal, Faith Hill, Will.I.Am, Bono, SURPRISE GUESTS… and TWO WORLD PREMIERES.”

Two world premieres… I know that one is the song she asked DF and Will.I.Am to write, but I wonder what the other one is. Hmmmm… Curiouser and curiouser…
