Philippine Digest – Japan (December Issue)
The Philippines has reasons to be truly proud these days, not only in the field of boxing, nor in the beauty pageants, but in the amazing conquests of two Filipino young bloods in the turf that Filipinos love to believe as their special field of excellence – singing!
Charice Pempengco was born, not with a silver spoon in her mouth, but with an extraordinarily strong and high note in her throat! For the awesome voice of 16-year-old Charice Pempengco; birth name: Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco on 10 May 1992, in Cabuyao, Laguna, was inherited from her mother. Born and bred in the islands to a family of musical talents, Charice had her mother as her voice coach since she began to sing at four.
When Charice was twelve, she joined the Little Big Star contest in 2005, and was a third placer. She attracted attention when YouTube posted her Little Big Star performance singing ‘I Will Always Love You.’ This caught the interest of a production company in Sweden. So off to Sweden Charice went in 2007 and recorded seven songs.
Then, FalseVoice channel released a video of Charice singing ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.’ Seoul Broadcasting System invited her in 2007, to perform on a talent show, Star King, where the Korean audience was wowed and awed with her peformance. On YouTube, viewers reposted her Star King performance. American television, TV network E!’s The Daily Ten featured her Star King peformance entitled, ‘A Star is Born’ on 14 November 2007, and then was crowned as ‘Queen of the Week’ with the headline, ‘A Queen is Born’ on 16 November 2007.
On 24 January, TV news in France showed her Star King performance.
Another feature in her crown of conquests – Charice performed on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on 19 December 2007, singing ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’ and ‘I Will Always Love You,’ leaving Ellen, the audience, and by then all America, in jaw-dropping awe. A prolonged, roaring standing ovation met her two performances. In an online poll, on the same show, Charice was voted as the Most Memorable Moment of 2007.
In December 2007, she was back in South Korea as she was chosen the Most Requested Foreign Act of 2007, at a nationwide voting system. Again standing ovation after she sang ‘I Will Survive’ and a duet of ‘I Will Always Love You’ with Lena Park.
In the Philippines, she became an instant celebrity ang guested on various TV shows of ABS-CBN Network. On 8 April 2008, Charice guested on London’s Paul O’Grady Show and sang her two already very popular songs. Again, the standing ovations.
All of America and Oprah Winfrey were dazzled by her powerful voice at the Oprah Winfrey Show on 12 May 2008. At the David Foster Show in Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas, she sang ‘I Have Nothing’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.’ As always, she received a roaring standing ovation after each performance. At Madison Square Garden, New York City, Charice was the guest of Celine Dion.
To top it all, she made a big hit in a country famous for its opera singers, where a strong powerful voice is the order of the day. Charice dazzled an audience at the birthday concert of Italian operatic pop tenor Andrea Bocelli on 20 July 2008 in an open-air theater in Tuscany. She sang a duet with Bocelli, ‘The Prayer,’ and two solos, ‘I Have Nothing’ and ‘I Will Always Love You.’ The Italian audience was entralled and many say Charice was the highlight of the evening.
After all these triumphs, at 16, more is still to come. Watch her!
On the Road to Singing Super Stardom
Charlie Green was born on 16 February 1997 to a British father, Roger Green, and to a Filipina mother, Cecilia Surmargo from Cebu. At two, Charlie was already entertaining family and friends with ‘New York, New York’ and ‘If I Were a Rich Man.’ At three, he entered a talent show on the cruise ship, Ocean Majesty and wowed the passengers with ‘All of Me.’
In 2002 he sang a medley of songs in a show at the Royal Opera House in York. In 2003, he performed on the opening cabaret at the Annual Black & White Minstrel Reunion; his father Roger Green was a vocalist with the show. Every year since then, Charlie was invited back. At eight, Charlie was invited by The Not Forgotten Association for ex-servicemen to perform at their annual concert in St. James’s Palace. The highlight of the day for Charlie was being presented to HRH The Princess Royal.
For Christmas 2007, Charlie recorded his debut single, ‘Hands Around the World,’ in association with the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. The song top of the charts for two weeks over the Christmas period. This now 11-year-old singing sensation of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent 2008, recently visited the Philippines for three weeks where he performed to sell-out concerts and appeared in 15 major TV shows for the ABS-CBN Global Network. He became an overnight star via his millions of hits on YouTube; has recorded an album and signed a deal with Star Records. The album is an eclectic mix of Charlie’s favourite ‘swing’ style numbers, ‘Summer Wind,’ ‘Fly Me to the Moon,’ some favorite Christmas songs and a recent composition, ‘In My World,’ and emotional view of the world through the eyes of a child.
Back in the UK, he is busy with concerts and filming before jetting off to Canada and the USA for TV performances in September and November, then a return to the Philippines in December for more TV/Concerts. Negotiations are taking place for him to perform in Hawaii and Grand Cayman.
At the tender age of 11, Charlie is very focused to develop his talents in the entertainment world. Mabuhay ka, Charlie!

I just became aware of Charice a few days ago. Her performances moved me to tears. I was so impressed that I wrote her up on my blog and included a video timeline of her most popular appearances. I also included a six-part mini-series about her life and a three-part interview with Racquel, Charice’s beloved mom. I hope you’ll stop by and visit—just search for “Charice.” Many thanks!
