International performer Lea Salonga is proud and overwhelmed by the pride and honor that other Filipino artists like young diva Charice and rock band Journey’s new vocalist Arnel Pineda have heaped for the Philippines.
“Siyempre nakakataba ng puso. Siyempre ang sarap-sarap ng pakiramdam na mas marami pang mga mang-aawit na Filipino na pumapasok din sa international scene, to hear of people like Arnel Pineda and Charice and for people like David Foster who keep praises upon this people.
“You know it shines a spotlight on the country which means we should all be in our best behavior because we are all being watched now,” the first star of the hit musical “Miss Saigon” said.
Salonga said that because of the interest the international audience has given Charice and Pineda, there are more reasons for Filipinos to follow in their footsteps in the international entertainment scene.
However, this should also be a reason to bring out the best in every Filipino.
“[The international media are monitoring all the good things and the bad things in the country...because people like Charice and Arnel are bringing attention to the country. ] So we should really be in our best behavior,” Salonga said.
Salonga is in the country to promote the upcoming film “Dayo,” which is an official entry to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival.
Salonga sang Dayo’s theme song “Lipad,” which was composed by Jessie Lasatin and Temi Abad and recorded by FILharmonika as conducted by Gerald Salonga.
In an interview, Salonga, the voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s “Aladdin”, said that she’s thrilled to be part of “Dayo.” She said it was only right to lend her voice for a homegrown animated movie to encourage others to produce more animated films.
Salonga is also busy for preparations for the musical “Cinderella”. She will be spending Christmas in California with her husband Robert Charles Chien and daughter Nicole Beverly.
This coming December 16 to 21, Salonga will be in Muang Thai Rachadalai in Bangkok, Thailand, for “Cinderella.”
